SHIELD has been great this season and it's because each arc has been treated as its own mini-season. That show should've never been 23 episodes a season. It was purely an advertising choice so they could tie the show into their fall and summer movies. Season 1 was just filler until Winter Soldier. They had to wait for that to come out to start their story rather than start the show a month before WS.

So, I hope the 8 episodes pay off.

Hive was the closest thing that (story wise) likely overlapped with the Inhumans, but the storylines are fairly independent of each other.
