Family Guy got better and better in season 3, sharpening its sense of joke-timing and cutting down on the "morals" and "feel-good moments" that plagued s1-2, while not yet being too crass or unfunny. Then they packed it in before it got stale...

The Simpsons was great from season 1 up until mid season 10, then they really cratered during late season 10, with horrible episodes such as Make Room for Lisa, Old man and the c student, and Monty can't buy me love that paved the way for the show turning into a full-blown pop culture shitfest.

Let's take that a step further. The show is bogged down by filler, and it's FUCKING NOTHING. I can count the amount of fillersodes that aren't complete wastes of 11 minutes on my hand.
They revolve around the boring townies doing boring shit in the boring town they inhabit. They don't even try to take them out of Beach City. This whole damn show does not exist outside of Beach City, it's either BC or fucking space. There is no in-between.

S1 had Steven exploring his powers(or how to harness them at least), it had the gems taking him to exotic, previously gem occupied locations. It opened discussion about Homeworld by introducing Rose( and her scabbard), and Peridot. Sure, they fall under my definition of filler, but they were build up characters and the world in the process. They actually did something to supplement the story.
Season 1 explored both characters and the world, while the other seasons are kind of stagnant in that regard.

Monster of the week was a convenient avenue for introducing Steven to the Gem "world" and showcased the teams powers to the viewers in an organic way.
"Filler" episodes introduced the human cast and established Steven's character in the world (that annoying kid everyone puts up with because he's endearing)
Having almost no info about who the Gems are and the entire backstory meant any glimpse or flashback of Rose felt like a huge infodump.

Compare to now:
Everyone is Flanderized
Except Steven who is completely unlike his character in season 1. He's a self insert for adult viewers instead of kids, his moral compass is straight as an arrow even compared to adults, he's the one who fixes personal and Gem problems now.

We know so much that when we get bits of info it feels lackluster. When there are filler episodes people feel like that time was wasted on townies (Like Ronoldo who have had several episodes dedicated to them) instead of Gem infodumps that people want.


Sugar blew her load too early. Jailbreak was the pinnacle of the series (even with everyone figuring out Garnet was a fusion before).

That said, "filler" episodes are bad not because they exist in large amounts, it's because 90% of the time they're fucking shit and do nothing to develop the characters being showcased. That, and also the fact Steven just absolutely has to be in every episode, it severely limits what they can do with the rest of the cast/world/etc.

Channel Chasers was supposed to be the end of the show, and it would have been a perfect stopping point. Then JTPH was supposed to be the end of both shows, which also would have been a decent stopping point, but only Jimmy Neutron got cancelled. Season 4 could have been better than it is. Mindful Education, Last One Out of Beach City, and Steven's Dream are all top tier but none of the other episodes are that good. As it is it is a step down from season 3.

We have yet to see if this is an overall trend or just a blip with the current season though.

Steven went from annoying escorts quest kid to paladin voice of reason during Ocean Gem. We see the shift, from when he's attacking water clones with squirtguns to when he makes a stand and summons Rose's shield in the process.

He still has traits of annoying little kid, but people grow from experiencing hardship, and they just keep throwing worse and worse life at him, so yeah, he's gotten a bit precocious when it comes to maturity, at least compared to the gems, who are more than a little stunted when it comes to growth of any kind. Still below where he should be developmentally, given he's actually like 15.

I've rewatched it like a million times now, and I fully stand by what I said. Episodes like "Thanksgiving Throwdown!", "Ice Ice Megas", and "A Clockwork Megas" are quite dull, and a few other ones (which I won't name because I still enjoyed them) are borderline.

I'll give them this, though: season 2's art style is definitely better (though less unique).
