Let's get real here, and not allow nostalgia to blind you. Smallville took like seven seasons to get to that point. Before that it was primarily teen angst soap with the first, like, three seasons were mostly "Kryptonite monster of the week" shit. And on the rare occasion, a really dumbed down versions of classic villains.

They loosened up down the line simply because it was profitable to keep making the show and they were running out of shit to do.

I'm not sure what my favourite season was, but I do remember enjoying the earlier seasons more because they at least seemed to be running with their own things rather than doing awful versions of classic villains. Monster of the week was a real downside to earlier seasons however.

But Lionel Luthor and weird friendtagonist Lex made up for that. Except in that awful season about the witch sisters.
