Getting some new shelving next week so I can have all the Mega collection in a row and not split up like this and so I have more room in general to display.
Would lining a shelf with a Skyline or City Scene for the figures look tacky?
I have a serious Dredd problem

I'm interested in those Crepax books but I'm not *hugely* tolerant of "it's sex so it's art." On a scale of "the best Corto Maltese story" to "the gaudiest Manara story" where does his stuff fall?
>>
>>90363778
>Berserk
Man.....I'm on vol. 20 and I'm loosing steam. The story is great and Miura's art is stellar as always, but...
>A) it will never be finished
>B) volumes will continue to go in and out of print so it's easy to "stop" buying them
I was buying a volume a month there for awhile and then the volumes in the 20's got hard to find for a few months and I realized the same was true for the 30's as well and I just sort of gave up.

Also Kondasha and Viz have spoiled me when it comes to paper size. Those little dinky dark horse manga trades are embarrassing.

>>90362771
>UXF omni
The run starts off really strong, but honestly it's not worth the price right now. If it gets reprinted jump on it.

>>90362814
>omnis
the larger ones are a little clumsy (X-Statix) but there are some really nicely sized ones too (Perez WW, Deadpool Beginings). In some cases, it's the only way to get the material (Kirby's 70's Captain America) and in others it's just cheaper to grab an omni for ~50% off when it comes out than to collect the issues any other way.
>>
>>90366019
You could always do what I do and read Berserk online. I caught up with it sometime in 2009 and only started buying the volumes recently.

Postin' my humble shelf.
One of Queen Bee's servants managed to photobomb the picture.
Also, a question to euro anons: where do you buy your comics?
For a few years, I've been buying from bookdepo, but they've got really expensive, I've switched to ARTSnCRAFTS on amazon.co.uk, which is fine, but I'm sure there are cheaper sites still.
>>
>>90369122
Isn't Arts an American store? You in the UK? If so do you ever pay customs/import tax on them and how are the delivery times?
>>
>>90369452
I think it's an UK store, senpai, but not sure about it.
And no, I'm from Hungary.
>>
>>90369122
to be honest, amazon uk still is the cheapest you get in europe, at least to poortugal

sometimes you can get lucky at www.kennys.ie/
but it has the same prices as book depository mostly ( for example, when headlopper came out, it was 16€ in most places, but it was 12€ on kennys.)

but yeah, mostly amazon.

>>90366759
yeah it's the Marvel Omnibus blowout sale.

still most current view, ordered the Fantastic 4 by Lee and Kirby Omnis vol 1-3 and Annihilation Conquest Omni from cheap-comics
I thought the 2nd was sold out, then it got re-listed again at 75€, wondered about the prices, then actually READ the announcement on top that the sale hasn't started yet, but that you can pre-order your shit until it's actually available end of march/beginning of april

Annihilation Conquest Omni for €39,50 instead of $125.00
Fantastic Four Omnibus Vol 01 New Ptg €45,00 instead of $99.99
Fantastic Four Omnibus Vol 02 New Ptg €35,00 instead of $99.99
Fantastic Four Omnibus Vol 03 New Ptg 39,50€ instead of $99.99

4 Omnis for €159 is fucking amazing

>>90369122
cheap-comics.com
but depending on your country, delivery fees can be quite high, €5 in the Netherlands, 6,95 to Belgium and Germany (here), etc, everything else is only going upwards. absolutely worth it for me, when I order at around €150+
>>
>>90366392
looks like that just counts for america again or maybe they'll fix it later in europe, but there's no change to my pre-order prices right now, shame.

Adlibris.com mostly, but it's a Sweden, Norway & Finland only store. The prices are pretty much amazon.de/co.uk price+shipping. And they have a free shipping option.

Bookdepository and Archonia have some good deals from time to time. They are cheaper if you buy lots of stuff at once than Adlibris.

Cheap comics.Com can be worth it depending on where you live.

I have a shitty camera so I'll just post the image someone else took for the listing I bought it from, it shows the condition better.

I heard comic collectors have issues with CGC stuff and I've never collected anything before to this nature, so I wasn't sure what the problem was, it seems fine to me?

I have 4 other comics of the show in mint/near mint condition but they're not in anything aside from plastic and a board to keep it from bending (bought them online too) and they all arrived a week ago or so like the CGC. Also the #1 Box Set thats in the same kind of condition, and it came with a used AT comic for some reason. They don't seem interesting enough to post but I might later, have stuff to do.

there are no paperbacks of amethyst as far as I know, but she shows up in sword of sorcery vol 2 (new 52) which was absolutely fantastic.
the way they experimented in it was pretty amazing (atomic knights lore, Beowulf/Grendel, new origin for amethyst which was kind of okay, actually even better than the original one and a few other things), but sadly it got cancelled pretty early because no one actually bought it.

this is pure guesswork here but maybe it hasn't "officially" started in most places yet. cheap-comics.com for example announced it 2 weeks back but says the books aren't ready to be delivered before end of march/beginning of april.
so what americans already get right now is just the stuff the shops already had available.
So just be a bit patient. or, you know, directly send the comic shops that exist a mail and ask them if they plan to do it as well?

No problem man. You're in for a dry reading with the Amethyst showcase. It's still entertaining though if you imagine that it's an unintentionally goofy adult parody of Rainbow Bride and I'm not sure since I've never watched a single episode of it but isn't Steven Universe all about gems? Because that's basically what Amethyst is about, too.
Sword of Sorcery is great, that is, as long as it's complete, because it had main stories and backup stories.

I accept your opinion, but I collect comics because I love science-fiction, fantasy and superheroes for the most part and consequently almost all my comics end up being science-fiction-, fantasy- and superhero-comics.
Also I love me some Fanco Belgian BDs (translated into my language) but some of them are so fucked (because some of them are 40+ years old and intensely read by my brother and I when we were kids, including fighting over them etc) I dare not put them out of their boxes.

It's not meant to be one panel. You can see the numbering for each panel. Additional proof, no gutter loss in the top right image. Plus, most cartoonists have 1 pages only, in spirit of the Winsor McCay originals. So no fear of gutter loss.
Also, the novelty here is the HUGE 16.4" x 1" x 21.3" format. Goes nicely with my massive Taschen collection.

Collecting the single archives might not be such a good idea since they're all OOP. if you're european, cheap-comics.com have 2-4 and the family archive, might have problems finding the first.
IST only have archive 4 and the family archive. cheapgraphicnovels.com have 2-4, hamiltonbooks have vol 4 plus the family archive.

Yeah, that's me. Mizuki was an amazing author. I only recently read those Showa volumes and really enjoyed them. More for his personal history than the history of the war, but both are interesting.

>>90424753
Megahex is great. I really enjoy Hanselmann's style of comedy. Bandette is alright. The artwork is great, but I kind of get annoyed at the writing (mainly the dialogue). It's too quirky for me. I'm not the target audience though so I don't complain.
>>
>>90425178
Didja see the recent local news spot on Fanta? It has loads of footage of Hanselmann working in Fanta H.Q and talking--in fact he's the only cartoonist in the piece. it's barely two minutes long but pretty cool.

I want to set up a more unique setup in my apartment. I was thinking of turning an empty space into kind of a mini library, perhaps with back to back bookshelves, but I'm having a hard time coming up with a good design.

What do you guys think? Short bookshelves vs tall? Standard shaped bookshelves vs "ramp" style shelves? I need some inspiration.
>>
>>90426788
Try consulting those books about maximizing space in small areas, it should have a few ideas about shelve designs which can hold a lot of books but are also space efficient.
>>
>>90420823
God damn anon, good shit
>>
>>90426788
boread bookshelves if you have the room, tallness depending on how many books you have/plan to put into them.
never been a fan of grown-up-toys, so my personal opinion is not to put anything /toy/ related (get a separate space for that, like a glass display case, friend of mine has a few of them for his warhammer stuff. he also made his own shelves but that's a whole different story) inside them.

how cheap/expensive do you want the shelves to be? how much space do you have for them? (height and width of room at the part you plan to use)
>>
>>90426788
>>90427229
also forgot to mention, post a pic of that part of the apartment and the stuff standing directly around it, that'd actually help me

Here's a roughly similar map from google. Basically, the entire "dining room" to the bedroom wall is taken up by my living room and computer. From about 8 feet from the right hand wall to the left hand wall is all free space, that I want to put the shelves.
>>
>>90430952
I'd suggest high shelves then. IKEA and the like if you're a poor/normalfag, something classier if you have a steady job and good income. take a look at used furniture shops, you can find the most amazing stuff there if you're lucky and can dish out the cash they want (because antiquarian furniture isn't cheap).
just make sure you take exact measurements of that part beforehand. my brother managed an impulse buy of a closet and it was too broad, didn't fit.
>>
>>90425388
I think I saw either him or HTMLflowers tweet about it. I haven't got around to watching it yet though.

I'm not sure you'd want one like that. look how it's actually positioned, it's leaning against the wall because it can't stand by itself. one false move, one heavy book positioned the wrong way and it all comes tumbling down

the top shelves don't seem to be able to hold any comic sized books with the spine towards the onlooker.
in any case I'm going to sleep, so no more useless tips from me except this one: make sure the side walls of your future shelf don't have ornamental stuff that actually block the look into the shelves, I had one of those once and you couldn't read 1-2 books on each side

>I could just pull a kramer and pile all my shit on the floor with no furniture

Plain or adjustable shelving offer plenty of ways to express your sense of design while still being space efficient. Decorative shelving isn't designed to hold a bunch of heavy omnis though. They're designed to hold yuppie tat like salt crystals and Precious Moments figurines, with the occasional paperback or two.
>>
>>90432864
That's true, I suppose. I just figure regular shelving might look like a bit of an eye sore when pressed back to back.

They're Mizuki telling the history of the Showa era (mid-20s to late-80s) of Japan. Most of the books center around WWII with post-war reconstruction being a focus on the final volume. Beyond that they're an autobiography giving details about Mizuki's life. His childhood, his experiences in WWII, and then his life as a mangaka. Cool shit. Interesting to see WWII from a Japanese perspective.

1) Extremely unlikely. I'd go for the Deluxe Hardcovers. Same page size as Omnis.

2) I have the DLX HCs for Invisibles and a friend of mine has the Scalped HCs and they're definiltey worth a look.

3) I don't have an exact "algorithm" for you, but DC doesn't usually move "back" to omnis after a series has the DLX HC / TPB treatment. Also, other than something with a new tv show (iZombie), there haven't been a lot of new Vertigo omnis. The DLX HC seems to be their new go-to.

Some are good, some are bad. Their saving grace is that they're mostly collected in Omnis, which are piss cheap compared to Marvel/DC omnis (probably because they're TPBs and not HCs, dunno about the quality though, but judging from the usual big Dark Horse books I'd say bad).
They mostlyl seem to be available on amazon and such and at least here they sell for around €25 (vol 6 isn't available and is sold for moon prices like €80, maybe find it somewhere else).
Also make sure you actually pick the comics and not the novels.

Oh no, it's a great book, don't get me wrong!
I dunno what to think about Nadel in person. He comes across as a bit of a cunt. But not, like, a cunt with integrity like Gary Groth. Like Groth was all: "we're gonna make this medium legitimate and fuck everyone who says different! God-damn the consequences!". Whereas Nadel seems kinda like the Jerry-manifestation from "Big Trouble In Little Sanchez", sliming up to art curators and sleazing himself into some sort of parasitical relationship with the "fine art" establishment...."PLEEASEEEE LIKE US....WE MAKE REALLY ARTISTICALLY LEGITIMATE WORK, NOW!" Why is he always writing about Carol Fucking Dunham (Lena Fucking Dunham's dad) and then linking to it on TCJ.com like he's the second coming of whatsisname, the eyeball guy, Phillip Guston. Very tenuous connection to comics at best.
And what was it that made the comicscomics blog 3,000 times better than the new (ish) TCJ.com?! It's like they took the best stuff but made it as crap as possible for TCJ. Shit, the site was better BEFORE Nadel and Hodler took over...I dunno...I'll get off my soabbox, now...Picturebox but out some damn fine work (and a fair amount of shit, too).

Cave Carson Has A Cybernetic Eye. It's one of the four Young Animal imprint (curated by Gerard Way) launch titles, and the first proper outing with Cave since his earliest silver age exploits.

Cave never had much character development or even spotlight, so they're mostly working with a blank slate here. Way himself is co-writing it with John Rivera, and Michael Avon Oeming is on art duties. The book is pretty psychedelic (reflected through Cave's broken and glitchy eye implant) and Oeming's art illustrates that nicely, contrasting the mundane world of spelunking with some Lovecraftian elder god demon shit and warped visuals

Each issue also features a SUPER POWERS backup by Tom Scioli doin his thang, and is almost worth buying just for that
>>
>>90482231
Yeah, it was a very wholesome debut. I've never read any original Wildstorm stuff outside of some Authority and Kev, so it's all new to me. Everything that Ellis does best is on display here. Hunt's art leaves me a little cold, I think it's a bit amateurish in parts but it serves the book decently enough

I'm definitely game to keep it on
>>
>>90482276
Sounds quite fun actually. Has Oeming's style evolved (i.e gotten better) since his Powers days?
Also thank you for taking the time to inform me. Might be worth me looking into.
>>
>>90482415
Personally, I've never liked Oeming's art. I know most do though so I was trying to be objective. He does a lot of 'experimental' compositions and panel arrangements that sacrifice the storytelling big-time. I appreciate what he's trying to do, but it almost always falls flat and kills the flow of the story.

Again, I'm biased as a comic artist myself. His cartooning approach never appealed to me and comes off as awkward and poorly informed most of the time. He's also just downright lazy at times

So no, I don't think he's improved since Powers. It's still worth reading, but I can't help but feel it's under serviced by the art
>>
>>90482415
His people look a little funky, but the psychedelic stuff is great.

Alternative universe: what if Zhao's life was spared by the Ocean Spirit at the cost of his memories and Firebending abilities and found a new life among the Water Tribe.
Probably the best ATLA fan fiction. Amazing writing, characterization, and art (as expected from rufftoon). It wasn't ever fully finished though.

No, I never liked it myself. I also cartoon (I mean, write, draw, hand letter etc everything myself--I appreciate your use of the distinction "comic artist"!) and remember in the early 2000's when his Powers stuff was the indie "flavour of the month" for a while and somehow it caught on and he started getting loads of work...mind you Oni pimped that shit out HARD with fucking t-shirts, police-style badges, fucking ZIPPOS...anyway, his flaws were fucking glaring back then, in terms of storytelling...the only thing I appreciated was that he didn't over-render and had a clean (albeit flat as fuck) style. That cover Anon just posted was in my opinion a bit of an improvement but I'd hafta look at some of the interiors before splashing out.
Laziness is one of the biggest sins a comic artist/cartoonist can commit, also! Mebbe that's why he gets the work--he just hacks it out and gets it done like three fucking weeks before his deadline, or something.
Cheers btw Anon.

>Not trying to be contrary but "psychedelic" isn't an excuse for unreadable and confusing page composition. But I haven't seen that stuff so whaddoo I fucking know!?

The reason I brought up Capes with Clowes is that Patience is straight up genre fiction except it seems a little ashamed to be what it is. Notice how the present is serious bzness, but the future is just goofy, and frankly not terribly imaginative visually or otherwise.

He uses Higgins Black Magic and Staedtler Pigment Liners. Says so on his website and the original art, from the 90s Hellboy stuff, into the 2000s, to the Hellboy in Hell stuff, looks more like it had washes of black ink more than it had markers.

His art really is lazy honestly. It's some of the most skillful laziness in the world, but looking at his hands alone shows the laziness. Guy is still admirable for what he can do with such a limited set of little details and the simplicity of his work.
>>
>>90499235
Vol 3 sucks ass though, Mohawk storm
>>
>>90499504
Oh, so I was half right, lel! God Higgins Black Magic is like fucking DISHWATER but so many cartoonists and comic artists use that shit.
Heh, "skillful laziness", I like that and I'm inclined to agree with you--most recent Hellboy related stuff I've read is the Guy Davis-drawn BPRD comics (who I think is an amazing artist) and haven't seen any of his recent stuff bar pin-ups. And, yeah, they do seem lazy...but are you familiar with the stuff I mentioned? Fafrd & The Grey Mouser was another good one, too. And (most) of the post-H.B comics I love by him are when he's inking himself with "traditional" tools--although these were relatively early in his career they were pretty exceptional and he stood out as an artist very quickly.
Agree with your last statement /co/mrade

HIs well as his high contrast art leads to a lot of miscommunication in the coloring process so Mignola leaned more and more to basic shapes as to be more clear in his conveyance, as well as his burning out and the effects of time on his hand. Guy is more about clarity and minimalism than he is about making really sexy looking shit, at the expense of his collaborators.

man, we usually have to pay €60+ over here in europe and it's still worth it.
you americans have black friday every day since you got IST, cheapgraphicnovels, hamiltonbooks...

Annihilation: Conquest, hands down.

doesn't look like it. New Teen Titans omni is by Perez, the other 2 TT omnis are Silver and Bronze age. Johns wasn't born at the time the first one was written and was just out of diapers for the 2nd one.

The issue is that "type" doesn't seem to factor in to it. I've had guys who work in chicken factories return stuff in perfect condition and PhD students that have never returned my book. In my experience, you never know until it's too late. I've got two friends that are collectors as well and those are the only people I lend/trade with.
>>
>>90501061
Even fellow collectors and bibliophiles can lose/fuck up your books and comics. Ultimately it isn't their stuff so the personal investment isn't as strong.
>>
>>90501061
>In my experience, you never know until it's too late.
this. and it may even be you yourself. I broke a The Dark Eye supplemental book of a friend of mine because it fell down while I was reading it, big book, made a huge dent into itself.
Quietly bought a new one and gave the new one to him instead. I still wonder if he ever noticed.
And he only gave me his regular book, he's a collector so he had a special edition signed by one of the writers as well but he never lent them out, good thing he didn't.
sold the dented one on ebay for double the price last year

Shit, how old IS he? Does he have, er, whatchamacallit, carpal tunnel syndrome or something? That shit will fuck you up. I think you make a good point about "miscommunication in the colouring process". All his Hellboy-drawn stuff is basically all coloured by Dave Stewart, isn't it? Sorry to digress you just reminded me of one of the earliest (?don't quote me!) Hellboy stories, I have it, pretty sure it's in D.H.P (might be the ish with the Wrightson Hellboy cover?), is it called The Chained Coffin, or something like that? And it's in b & w, right? That was great, Hellboy works so much better in black and white, I mean, when drawn by Mignola....sorry about the digression, yes we are of one mind on this subject, clarity (he is a VERY good, clear storyteller) and his minimalist sense of page design is absolutely fucking spot-on.
>>
>>90501303
He's 56. He's of the 80's generation of artists but didn't really get going in the industry until his mid/late twenties. He didn't start Hellboy until 32/33. He's one of those rare guys like Kirby who hit his peak in his thirties and forties.

This one, right?

I don't know for sure but I've heard that he can only draw at certain times in the day now. Maybe it's related to how he can only write early in the day and that's why he doesn't shower in the morning since he'd lose a good chunk of his writing time.

Quirks, man. They're weird and very personal.

Also all of his projects are colored by Stewart, has been ever since he became his regular colorist. Only times Stewart wasn't Mignola's dedicated colorist, "The Baba Yaga" and beyond I believe, was when Mignola colored his own work via watercolors.

>>

That's the one! Wow, didn't know all that stuff about his routine...wonder if it's arthritis? Back pain?

Heh. Quirks. Amen, to that, /co/mrade, Amen to that.

Nice one for the info re: the colourists, too. And I've never seen the uncoloured version of that cover, it's beautiful, great late-period Wrightson, so thanks for that!
>>90501365
Oh, 56, right. I know about the latter part, I more-or-less followed his career "in real time". And there are probably more cartoonists/comic artists than you'd think who started off in their thirties. Edmund Baudoin, for one. Darwyn Cooke rest in peace didn't get his start in comics 'til his thirties--in fact I think he was thirty when his first project was published, maybe 29? I know he was an animator beforehand but still, different medium and all that...also some UG/early "alternative" cartoonists didn't start getting published 'til they hit thirty. Personally, my favourites ALL peaked (or, indeed, ARE peaking!) around late thirties to early fifties.
God, I remember buying that one Superman comic where he fights The (or "a"?) Banshee in Ireland on the strength of the Mignola cover (can't for the life of me remember if he did the interiors, though....), such a great, striking image.

It is pure shit. I think the assumption is that india ink is just india ink regardless of brand.
>>
>>90506070
THANK YOU! Like I said I can't believe how many pros use that shite.
You got a fave ink? I've settled on Daler Rowney FW Acrylic Ink--VERY deep black, thick but not TOO thick, no (or very minimal, depending on brand of Bristol) issues with bleeding...I think it's great. Windsor & Newton has been shit for the last 6 years or so, always bleeds no matter what paper...I also like Speedball Super Black but that tends to get too viscous over time and after a while can't be used with crowquills--it's great for brush-work, though.
Have you ever used Sumi ink? Any others you recommend? Never used the Deleter stuff but their white-out is probably the best on the market. Btw dunno if you know this but a great way to keep white out at a manageable consistency is to put about three millimetres of water in the jar, on't shake it, just leave it sitting on the top and tilt the jar to drain the water away from your brush. Really good tip I picked up.

holy shit man, that thing is HUGE, looks even bigger than DC's Absolutes and it has the page count of an Omnibus

I still wouldn't get it, honestly; I'd rather have what DC has been doing with their new Gold/Silver/Bronze age collections and re-printing all the early stuff.

I know, I know, but it still looks fucking amazing. kind of pissed about the ones they used for that adamantium/platinum stuff, too. just x-men and deadpool

Dilute it with water. Mine worked after watering it down.

Yasutomo sumi is pretty good, so I've heard. Holbein also makes an excellent sumi paste.

€84,35 + €3 shipping from Speedy Hen over Amazon.de's marketplace. They properly package it and they're literally speedy, sent from UK but arrived in like 5 days. normally you wait up to 2 weeks from there.
Wew, they increased the price by 5 cents, better hit it now.

Two weeks worth of pulls, and my last trip to my current LCS before moving this weekend. Going to miss is, Forbidden Planet is usually shit but this store was always great.

Will need to decide whether to set it up with another Forbidden Planet or a Traveling Man, as there's both where I'm moving to. Any Brits have experience with Traveling Man for singles? Only ever been in to look at their trades, which seem quite pricey.
