There was two animated films coming out around the same time in China
Rock Dog and I forget the name of the other
the production company that made the other film, basically own majority of the movie theater in China
so they refused to play it at 99% of their theater
so that caused Rock Dog to bomb

Like everyone else has stated, it was a pretty mediocre/average film. Its that rare little something that idles on the edge of being bad but somehow stays in neutral territory. Most of it is in presentation and execution since a lot of the story flaws could've been explained away with some simple exposition or extra dialogue. The animation and overall production value is not bad either.

Really, what sells this movie is Bodi in all of his unparalleled, good natured attitude through the entire movie with some interesting characters that are somewhat vague enough for the audience to interpret them however they like.

There really is no reason anymore to make animated movies for theater if you aren't Disney or Dreamworks.
If you don't have the budget of hundred million dollars at the least, there just is no way on hell the movie will meet the baseline these days.
The big boys have in a way created a monopoly for themselves, they are in full control of the field and there just isn't enough audience for anyone else. They are the big trees of the forest, catching every single ray of light.
I'm glad the "monopoly" has been created through pushing tech and quality tho, things could be far worse.

I guess smaller movies could still happen through the internet, but that shit rarely makes any money back either, unless the movies are really REALLY fucking small.

That's the only measure for success because if something doesn't make money than its not getting any more content. It also needs to make more money back then what it cost to make in order for it to be financially successful. Since marketing cost several million too for big stuff like Disney movies the movie has to also make enough to cover those costs too. It's the same sort of shit for AAA video games too where more money is spent on marketing than actually making the game.
