I didn't follow the show this season, which I regret.

Why did Marco's two "best friends" not show up at all this season? It was even referenced how they never got any speaking roles except Alfonso's laugh I think at the last episode.

I feel like there are more jokes about it being bad in the first than the second, but that theme does continue when we see some monsters in the second season.

The impression you get in later episodes is that her parents aren't horrible people so much as more concerned with keeping the status quo, and can even be pretty kind in certain situations. Mewni seems like a shit place to live but I think the whole show tries for a "shades of gray" approach to issues/morality.
