I'd like to know why Act 6 is longer than Acts 1-5 when I feel it has less substance. Is it just my perception? I haven't sat down to analyze it for a proper critique, and if I don't do the work I think I shouldn't press the author for an answer.

It's because it needs to jump between two new sets of characters that need to be established AND go through their entire arcs (almost all of which aren't very good), give the entire background of Alpha Earth, constantly check in with the old cast, reintroduce the old cast into the story, essentially reveal everything we know about the main villain, what his plans are, and the path to stopping him, introduce new mechanics into the setting, finish up everyone's arcs, and conclude the story. And let's not forget the immeasurable fuck tonne of teenage relationship drama.

There's too much going on in too many directions. Even with an endless deluge of exposition dumps and abandoned concepts and plots threads, it spreads itself far too thin.

I legitimately liked Eridan. He was representative of the real shittier part of the Troll species that existed as well as a litmus for how fucked the Condesce made society work. Eridan shares the same trait as Vriska with discovering a part of their history with some token left behind by their ancestor. Eridan, like Vriska, fashions himself to what he has been conditioned to expect from his station in life as well as the exploits of his lineage, but unlike Vriska never actually enjoys success in what he tries to do. He has a real skewed look at romance without ever visibly understanding it and his reasoning for desiring the genocide of land-dwellers really sits on flimsy tinder. All in all he's Draco Malfoy wearing Harry Potter's garb and makes all the horribly wrong decisions all on the blatant obliviousness he maintains regarding his own cognitive dissonance in regards to other trolls. And what's stunning is that it all does pay off: he does snap and do a number of bad things that eventually results in him getting his comeuppance.

He also had the original shitty love triangle ages before the Jane-Jake-Dirk shit triangle even came to be, and honestly I think the Eridan-Feferi-Sollux triangle was much more engaging in that it at least lead to two of them getting killed into irrelevance and the last being left in a purgatory where Hussie couldn't ruin them as a character in the following years.

The only thing I might tweak of this whole thing would be to have an ironic echo of Eridan getting killed by Gamzee rather than Kanaya. That purpose sits twofold in that Kanaya ceases to be a character after Murderstuck and exists as a prop at the end of Homestuck (to the point of her being dead not making much a difference) and Gamzee and Eridan playing out the same that had happened when the Orphaner reported to the Grand Highblood.

Damara was a really neat idea that had absolutely no punch to her because her betrayal and selling out to Lord English never actually comes to fruition or is revealed. The whole drama that led Damara from turning into what she is even was told off-handedly and was so divorced from what we as readers were supposed to pay attention to that it easily falls on wayside as 'interesting side trivia' than something we actually could get invested in.

The Dancestor story really is what a vehicle like the Paradox Space comics should have explored because that would have been markedly more intimate than what we got.

I like that Hussie went out of his way to have Eridan get rejected by just about every girl in the series, including the two humans.

But yeah, as far as 'characters who are engaging but also shitty people' are concerned, Eridan was always better than Vriska and Gamzee for me. Vriska and Gamzee's shittiness as people was always very alien, with Vriska representing the worst traits of troll culture while Gamzee was just an emotional wreck. Eridan, on the other hand, felt very human in his shittiness. Like, you may meet a Vriska once in your life, if you're really unlucky, but just about everyone's met someone who's screws themselves over constantly and fucks up everyone around them. Plus, as you said, he's one of the few trolls who actually get a full arc, even if it's from 'disaffected loser' to 'school shooter'

There's nothing more inspiring in the Homestuck comic than Dirk's love for his brother, in all its forms.

After he killed Hussie, he made himself the main character and Act 6 should've been concluded with his removal and the reinstallation of Hussie as the author.

But since Act 6 was so underwhelming and already had so many aborted arcs, it was clear that Hussie just wanted to end this trainwreck.

I don't think Sollux is inoffensive, it's just the massive varied cast of Homestuck combined with where his story ended made him a straightforward character which places him firmly in the background.

Sollux is a hacker and was the guy who decoded the SGRUB game which had kicked everything off. His personality is as 'that guy you had as a friend in high school' thing to him in spades. He doesn't get caught up in drama and sticks course into what he has to do. He's not overly selfish, he isn't aggressively outgoing, but he ALSO will do things for others selflessly if he has to, such as getting others into SGRUB and dying to the Vast Glub, or staying behind in the vastness of space with Aradia while sending everyone else away on the meteor after the Green Sun is created.

Sollux has nothing that screams 'handicap' that actually bothers him. Even his lisp is treated tepidly. Being the vehicle of Aradia's death, failing to stop Eridan in the duel (and by that vein, being partially responsible for her dying) and even making SGRUB doesn't psychologically weigh on him in a significant manner because he's always of two minds of whether he's worthless garbage or actually ok. His double theme ironically simplifies him in a cast that is wrapped up in their own complicated bullshit, where the only complicated thing of note about Sollux is trying to pin whether he's alive or dead. His personality is so balanced that even when he's spliced with Eridan into Erisolsprite his personality manages to draw out the self-loathing that forces the Eridan half to apologize to Fefetasprite, or the Feferi portion, for being an absolute giant piece of shit.

Sollux is just a genuinely good person in the cast of psychos and idiots and somehow had the wherewithal to get away from the madness before it poisoned him.

Even the Psiionic and Mituna reflect that 'decent guy' personality that Sollux has. No iteration of a Captor is a vile piece of shit.
