I started watching the first few episodes of ML a few hours ago on Netflix.

The whole concept of the show is pretty generic so I can grasp what is going on very quickly, but it was really jarring to not have any sort of on-boarding and cut straight to villain of the week stuff. I could have really used an explanation of their powers, as the charms blinking confused me for an episode or two. That would have lent to a more tense atmosphere.

Their problem was that they were too slow to saturate the market leaving it wide open for cheapo Chinese knockoffs. Alibaba et al had loads of costume, toys and gadgets almost from day one, while the licensees took their own sweet time.

Yeah, the merchandising has moved at a glacial pace. But I was talking about "stretching" the franchise so quickly. The show came out a year and a half ago (hard to believe it's been that long) and already they are talking a live action movie and are producing two other shows that take place in the same universe. And all of this has come at the cost of somewhat neglecting the actual show itself. Considering how many years this has been in planning it is strange how glacial it was. Perhaps someone was trying to negotiate licensing costs down but that has now bit them in the rear since the Chinese has flooded and even saturated the market. Yes the show is just over a year old but the planning started years before that.

A problem with some shows and many young artists is that their audiences grown older (and grow up) while the artists remain in the past until they freak out completely (Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus and too many others). The live action project might be something to catch up with their audience when the 12 - 15 move to the 15 - 18 age brackets.
