With Odin it's a mix of tech and advanced scientific understanding of the cosmos (like the Kamar Taj).

Odin is the Allfather of the Norse gods. Their power is derived from him and as such it can be taken back by him. This is why he has to go in for an Odinsleep every so often. When Thor eventually replaces him, then he will take on that role.
