Allura gets knocked around plenty, the problem is she's always back up and ready to go as soon as she needs to be. Just losing one fight don't mean that much anyway. I want to see her fail. I want to see her forced to admit that she can't do something no matter how hard she tries to force it. That thing being piloting a Lion.

I want her to be far worse at it than classic Allura ever was and cause something to go terribly wrong while stubbornly insisting that she can. It would be a good take charge moment for Keith too, as the new leader, and show that he can do leader stuff while still forming arm. Between Allura's issues and Lance flipping shit Keith will have plenty of opportunity to show he can succeed Shiro.

Or maybe Allura will be a great pilot after 3 episodes and whatever Lion will bond with her after 5 or 6 and we'll never see a Lion reject someone as opposed to just playing hard to get. Boring all around.

It's never been the right time, Allura has only seen the flirty side of him coming onto her, but hasn't actually spent any meaningful time yet with Lance to let her know him better. I still don't think there will be a bunch of Lion swapping. The way they introduced the Lions and the bonds and associated them with specific characteristics makes it very unlikely compared to other series. And even in classic only Blue changed hands. At best Keith might switch and Allura takes Red, but I'm skeptical even toward that happening.

There's a good chance that there are a few die hard DotU purists that are going to be deeply disappointed in the coming months.

How do you think next season's going to go?

We'll probably start out with the growing pains of how to make Voltron work without Shiro alongside Lotor getting used to fighting team Voltron himself.

After a while of those shenanigans they might find a solid lead on where Matt is and go to pick him up.

Also I think we'll go back to Earth. Someone in the Galra force (probably Lotor since he's not so blinded by 'muh lion' lust) will probably realize that most of Voltron's paladins are humans, and they'll be able to find out where humans live if that one shop selling cheap Earth crap in the mall episode is anything to go by. It would make a good season finale if a re-rallied team Voltron has to protect their homeworld from the Galra empire.

Other than that I'm not sure what plot threads are left hanging. Keith's mom and the origin of the Lions I guess, but that seems more like backstory than anything.

Well there is at least one semi popular Lance crack ship that Kallura doesn't touch...but probably not. More than likely he'll get some random alien designated love interest. Keith is a kind person underneath his harsh exterior - he's just afraid of showing it. Falling in love with a person of a race that has wronged your's in the past doesn't mean you become unaware of racial prejudices. People from groups marred by ethnic tension marry each other all the time.
And the Galra-Altean history is more complex than that. It is likely that the Alteans may have done something awful to the Galra in the past.

The best set up would be with Shiro and Keith both being leaders who complement each other. Shiro calms Keith down and stops him from being too reckless, Keith does things Shiro would think are too risky but ultimately make them win.

He can be both. Central Texas is full of Koreans, usually families of soldiers that got married to Koreans and brought them back after doing a stint in South Korea and PCS'd to Fort Hood, retired there, and had generations of half-Korean Texans. There's also a large Korean presence in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. It's within the bounds of possibility that Keith is at least a quarter Korean.

What proof do you have that he's not? It's merely not impossible that he's of Korean extraction just because he's from Texas, that's all. They are not mutually exclusive, so should there be some big reveal about what Keith considers his heritage apart from 'Galra', there's no need to be surprised or consider it some sort of impossible concept if he turns out Korean. That we're two seasons into the show and we're even having this discussion is, I think, clearly indicative of how utterly lazy the showwriters have been in giving out background info that would make this all a moot point.

Why choose Korean for Keith? Are you like everyone else and for some reason dubbed him Korean because of his voice actor? The writers care of course, Lance is Cuban, Hunk is Samoan, and Shiro is japanese.
They'll get around to announcing Keith and Pidge probably on their birthday or at a con.
