Award Ceremony doesn't start for another three hours, get back to you later
>>
>>90252974
I haven't seen the other nominees, but Kimi No Na Wa deserves it more than Zootopia, and I loved Zootopia.

The animation industry deserves a better award than an afterthought Oscar.
>>
>>90252974
Zootopia will win to signal against Trump.

It's going to be FurfagSJWtopia or Moana guaranteed.

I wonder how many of the acceptance speeches will be about Trump or his ideas.

What the fuck are you even talking about?
>>
Come to think of it, why doesn't /co/ have its own awards ceremonies?
Or does it already and I just have no clue what I'm talking about
>>

The Oscar don't go to animes, just deal with it.
>>

At least twice as many as the Globes
>>

>Makoto Shinkai
I haven't seen that one, but I don't have to, it's some boring dumb story again, why do you even watch that crap? I mean, he even said that he's overrated himself, I respect that he sees it, but I can't understand the fans.
>>
>>90253387
Well in this case I think it has more to do with Funimation's decision to try and sneak it into the Oscars at the last second with zero publicity.

But the point is, if these awards don't measure the best (which isn't necessarily an anime film), then what's the point?
>>
>>90253385
>implying /co/ could ever agree on anything
>>
>>90253484
It was actually my first Shinkai film. I enjoyed it, it's as simple as that.

I'm not saying it deserves to win the award, I'm just saying it deserved the nomination over say, Zootopia.

>>90253385
No, there's no /co/ awards.

It would be dominated by shit anyway; most people here have no objective taste.
>>
>>90253384
Hollywood is politically left, either as a show to appeal to the liberal half of American audiences or out of actual belief. The right has political power in America since the election, so Zootopia is the obvious choice to make a political statement with because it's a movie about overcoming racism and acceptance of all people.
>>
>>90253761
>implying most members actually voted in the category
>implying they won't just default to the Disney releases anyway
Go home /pol/
>>
>>90253761
Thanks for explaining the obvious parts, but your retarded worldview still needs explanation. Or maybe not, like this anon >>90253804 said, just go to your board.
>>
>>90253489
So you say, but Your Name is ignored by most critics and awards even here in Japan. The movie just deserves no praise.
>>
>>90252974
If it was really about excellence in the field of animation, Kubo deserves it most.

It'll go to Moana or Zootopia, obviously.

Screencap this post, if something else wins I will eat a fucking glass bottle. That's how confident I am that the award will almost always go to a decent Disney film.
>>
>>90253356
It's legitimately hard to guess when you have two Disneys though. But I'm going with Zootopia.

This was the 2015 one

You faggots only push this mediocre movie because "muh epic Keit-Ai amirite?".
btw Red Turtle should win.
>>
>>90253385
You ever seen the /v/ awards? It just becomes full of cringey jokes and usually ends up being even more biased than the actual awards (all good awards go to a critically acclaimed game, all bad awards go to an easy target)
>>
Everyone knows it's going to Zootopia. When was the last time Oscars in animation surprised you?
>>
>really want Borrowed Time to win Best Animated Short

>>
>>90253934
Not this time. Moana can't compete with Zootopia.
>>

It does seem like Funi should have just held off until this year. No Disney movies to compete with, although there is Coco.
>>
>>90254056
It's not like it's undeserved though if it does go to Piper.

That beach looked amazing. I like it when shorts go all-out with visuals as they'd be too expensive and difficult to try with a full animated feature.

I liked it. It was beautiful, touching, and relatively simple. Maybe because I got to approach it with a fresh set of eyes that gave me a better perspective from some you cynical bastards, I don't know.

I'll check out Red Turtle though.
>>
>>90254110
No that wasn't surprising. That was when Pixar was seen as doing better animation than Disney. People voted for the Studio. Disney chooses which movie to campaign for. They didn't want Wreck It Ralph to win. Probably because it had a bunch of licensed non-Disney characters in it. They couldn't appear that the only way they could beat Pixar was using characters they didn't own. That's why the new movie isn't about video games, its about internet Apps.

I'm fine with any of the nominees winning. This has been a particularly good year for animation. You could double the number to 10 and still have a good list.

We all know the Oscars treat the animation industry like crap, but it's still nice to see people get recognition. At the very least, I'll give them credit for not nominating Sausage Party.

That doesn't make a film good by default. There's no reason for a film like that to be animated in the first place, and to have this level of animation? Why? It only makes me regret that all that quality animation is wasted on a story like that.

As much as I love Kubo and Laika in general, for the love of God someone get them some good screenwriters.

>>
>>90258319

>>
>>90258266
But there is suspense in seeing what crappy celebrity they send out to make fun of animation as a medium. Remember when Chris Rock went out and disrespected voice actors everywhere by mocking how easy the job was and how little work it took him to make millions of dollars?

What will they do this year?
>>
>>90258266
Not entirely. There are always a few upsets at the Oscars every year

Let's hope one is in animation
>>
>>90258367
THAT'S the suspense!
>>
>>90256422
I go back and forth on who I think should win. I think Zootopia is the better film in terms of plot and themes. But if you weigh it heavily based on animation, it's hard to argue against Kubo. Technical marvel.

Though I do have to give Zootopia credit for its animation detail as well. All that fur is no joke. We've come a long way since Bolt.
>>
>>90258319
You're crazy if you think anything other than Zootopia is winning in a year where the biggest hot topic is race relations.
>>
>>90253258
There are plenty of animation awards, you just choose to only care about the one award that barely gives animation lipservice.
>>
>>90256982
I agree that Kubo's story was a little meandering (I remember someone calling it like watching people play DnD and it's actually pretty accurate), but it got the emotion through well and the visuals were gorgeous.

>>90256728
Lower level major.
>>
Are the animated shorts on Youtube? Every year I've never seen most of them and think "I'll do better next year" and then inevitably don't.
>>
>>90258309
The only choice I'd be unhappy with would be Moana just because it's the safe Disney Princess movie that they all got dragged to by their daughters. Even then it still wouldn't be nearly as bad as some of the other years.

I'm like 90% sure it'll be Zootopia though.
>>
To be fair, what we should do first is approve WDAS's great achievements so far,
and say "You Deserve It!" to Zootopia and Moana,
and thank the Oscars for treating DISNEY very well.

The world dosen't want to see those freaking chinese films winning.
The Oscars really does a good job.

Animation is a joke because the WEST rendered the medium into a joke. You know what's funny? Walt Disney is to blame for this shit. He and his sickening Family Friendly usage of animation to the point Americans see it as junk for kids. It's karmic justice that when Disney made Fantasia which would bore any child it was a massive failure. It really taught him a powerful lesson about the shit he helped create, the stigma of animation being garbage for kids.

Unfortunately it also meant that Walt Disney was trapped and to survive and stay profitable he needed to double-down on the family friendly bullshit. That was the end of Western Animation. Historically Japan never went through this bullshit. They were inspired by Disney's garbage, but they never replicated it, they always injected strong themes of death and the like in their animated media that youngster could watch, guess it helps they lost the world war and as a result they weren't exactly a happy country who was going to buy into BS, a country's culture defines the type of media made and because they were the losers of a world war they were not going to be making sugary fluff but rather media where reality and the consequences are better represented (Barefoot Gen anyone?). Honestly why do you think Russian animation is also fairly depressing in themes as well (that isn't to say they will never make fluff for kids)? Because historically their country also went through some harsh times.

The USA historically has been a story of rising in status and wealth so "Everything is good without a hitch" is the message reflected in the animated media. I can't wait until the USA collapses, that way we'll see if people will buy into stupid sugary diversity animated flicks and princess shit.

I don't care. It's garbage and if we are going to start cherry picking shit and say things that "should have been" 5 centimeters per second is a far better film than your name. Competing with everything in 2016, there were better things than that by far. It didn't deserve it. The story was strange, it didn't make much sense, and in general was retarded. "We share out of body experiences, but we slowly fall in love with each other even though we never shared an actual interaction with each other that wasn't through some phone diary. And then by the end we start to forget eachother." Then somehow the continuity exists where the girl fucking dies, then she doesn't, but yet somehow they were able to talk to each other with a three year time lapse between them near a crater that was deemed "holy" because that makes sense even though it was just a previous location of a meteor strike and had no spiritual significance what so ever.

Then she magically convinces the town to get out after seemingly failing for 20 minutes and doesn't know why. Still somehow knows the meteor is going to fucking wreck her whole fucking town even though that information is out of body information, but hell it's needed so they can have a good end.

The rules are messy, and things are just violated in terms of shit that makes sense so instead of having the typical bitter ending, this one ends in a casual viewer happy ending style. It's actual shit.

>There WERE /co/ awards. I remember voting for them back in 2015.
>If my memory is correct, there was an attempt to do them in 2016 but they never happened. I think whoever ran them threw up his hands
The person who ran them was incompetent and knew nothing about comics and very little about cartoons:

>2011 awards: the organizer combines live-action cape movies and animated movies into one "film" category.
>2012 awards: organizer runs off without releasing the results, complaining that they were "too predictable."
>2013 awards: a "new" organizer makes nonsensical categories lead to broken voting responses, leading to the comics side of /co/ mocking the results. "New" organizer later claims the "old" organizer contacted them with last year's results and releases them, although later admits to having been the same person.
>2014 awards: throw a fit about complaints surrounding nonsensical categories. When anons ask why there's a /tv/ category for non-animated, non-comic book inspired films, throws another fit.
>2015 awards: start organizing the awards, keep the nomination period way too long (again!) to the point where threads get zero replies, then fuck off forever due to the perceived lack of interest. All while whining that nobody is replying to their pet category, music in animation.

It just so happens that everyone else on /co/ is lazier than they were.
>>
>>90262767
I should point out, though, that I don't necessarily agree with all of your post. It's just incredibly well argued and written from a stylistic point of view.

nobody since kubo was bad
>>
>>90263127
A shame. It would be nice if there was someone competent enough to do it

It wasn't bad, just ok. I think it's overrated around these parts but IMO I think it should win for its merits as a piece of art.

BEST ANIMATED FILMS 2016:

1. In This Corner of the World
2. A Silent Voice
3. The Red Turtle
4. Classmates
5. Kubo

>>
>>90261177
I disliked Blind Vaysha. The animation was great but the short just sort of ends rather abruptly. It poses the question of how she manage to reconcile her two sights but never answers it. Too deep for me ending was a cop out.
Pear Cider's low on actual animation and kind of has the same problem where it forgets to tie itself back to the letter at the beginning, but it deserves it more than the others for pushing itself out of the family friendly ghetto. Also for sound and atmosphere. It imo has their best voice-acting/voiceover of the nominees. Also is the longest.
>>
>>90263150
lot of the Kubo fans are admitting that zootopia is winning the award.

its a disney gimme award.

if you are looking for the salt i don't think you'll find it.
>>
>>90263205
The Academy is trying damn hard to avoid looking racist this year. Zootopia was a movie about racism, but if they give the award to an animal movie instead of a movie about a brown girl, is that seen as racist?

I'm leaning Moana.

Yeah. I've always been willing to do the back end of the work, tallying totals and prepping them for presentation (both of which the old organizer complained were the most difficult parts), but the front-end "hype" work and dealing with everyone's complaints turn me off from it.

Agred on Vaysha. I expected some kind of resolution and was disappointed. But I really liked the art style. Pearl, on the other hand, was pretty ugly, but I liked the story it told. Might have been more fun to watch in VR. Trying to do 360 within Youtube wasn't as engaging as it might otherwise have been.
I feel like I didn't understand Borrowed Time. Like I get the plot, but it felt like too much of a fragment.
Piper was cute, but that was about it.

No.

The animated award was basically made because of pressure groups, meaning that the first year there it would go to something genuinely deserving because it's in the spotlight but the companies don't think that anyone cares about animated films at the Oscars.

When it becomes clear people do, Disney moves to have its products as acclaimed as possible and starts advertising and essentially bribing in that category much more aggressively.

Righties love to whine about "progressive" movies winning because in their minds any movie where the message is more inclusive than "the holocaust was awesome and slavery was fun" is automatically too liberal.

In reality, though, the liberal movies hardly ever win. What wins is safe, conventional, boring critic bait that doesn't really stand for anything. La La Land is a musical about two people who love hollywood falling in love and talking about how great hollywood is. That's it.

It's like if the Grammies awarded Album of the Year to an album titled, "Grammy Judges Have Huge Penises and Everyone Likes Them."

no no i get that, doubly so now with whos in charge. i mean personally my excessive liberal ideal is that on the homeland there would be no need what so ever for automatic killing machines. i mean anything tahts made to fire faster than a human can is something made to kill as fast as possible, weapons of war, and i dont think we need that on domestic soil. but like i said thats a dream.
but for what you said, its hard to balance the two. though i would personally hope that many people who wear a uniform would consider themselves citizens over servants of the state.

Well I would hope so, considering I'm not planning on firing rainbows if government forces do arrive at my doorstep.

But what I'm saying is, essentially, people are kept pretty paranoid. The issue isn't necessarily the guns, it's that people get so paranoid that they believe their neighbours are against them and out to get them, when statistical probability shows it unlikely.

Hopefully more research will go into the psychology that precedes mass murder and terrorism so we can focus on that.

Jesus Christ, either way, it speaks to something incompetent in the whole affair, doesn't it.
>>
Wait, seriously? I turned off the TV when La la land won, and Moonlight won?

Wow, I miss all the good stuff.
>>
>>90268010
We know you buy two, and have that 'special shelf' for your nude figurines ;)
>>
>>90268870
It was very clearly about race, anon.
>>
so regardless we all just witnessed some broadcast history shit.
and this was the OSCARS, not some sill pageant
>>
>>90268870
>>90268961
It's about bigotry and discrimination as concepts, I think. Whatever bigotry and discrimination plays more on someone's mind is what they're gonna see more in the film.
>>
>>90268898
What I'm saying is that is so much of a stretch its barely worth mentioning and if you're going there, there are more than two possibilities we could suspend disbelief to at least discuss.

Maybe this was to fill the news cycle as a smoke screen so we're not talking about shit that matters. Stay noided.
>>
>>90269046
yeah, they went both the high road and the smart road with this and i think the movie is better and more artful for it
>>
>>90268870
It is about racism but very poorly done. Good movie with the core idea done very poorly. It will be forgotten
>>
>>90268888
I understand you but as I said her doll have poor articulation, for display? well it's ok but I would prefer something with more articulations, this Juddy figure at least seems to have nice hips and legs, it's something...
>>
>>90269070
>Maybe this was to fill the news cycle as a smoke screen so we're not talking about shit that matters. Stay noided.

I mean, that's the basic effect of these big award shows.
>>
>>90268935
>>90268942
Warren Beatty said he was handed the best actress envelope; that's why he was confused but announced La La Land.
>>
The girl I saw Zootopia with said that she initially thought the film was about workplace sexism not racism for the first part of the film, until the racism stuff became obvious, and she didn't like it as much once it became about racism either.
>>
>>90269046
Biology was a HUGE factor in the movie. It's harder to argue that it's not about race.
>>
>>90269046
the fun thing is it also shows the opposite side of the coin and the consequences of a multicultural society, for this reason /pol/ dont dislike too much zootopia, it shows (in a shugary way) the reality
>>
>>90269162
>>90269070
i mean sure, if you're a fucking moron who can process more than two things at once.
i mean being wowed a a major gaff on TV hasn't made me forget that bad shit is happening.
dont be a dickhead about it
>>
>>90269162
Exactly. Now just make it a bigger story to cover up something big.
I mean, how often do people make mistakes?
>>
>>90269227
>the consequences of a multicultural society
what, that you have to work for unity and understanding? no fucking duh. what kind of moron thins that friction between people means that you shouldn't even try or are justified in not wanting to?
>>
>>90268870
I thought it was about 'stereotyping', as a way of hiding the racism aspect.
>>
>>90269205
>It's harder to argue that it's not about race.
Maybe if you happen to be racist.
>>
>>90268946
Anon pls, I'm not a good enough sculptor to do the figure justice like that one Japanese artist. I might sculpt custom parts if I had the skills, though.

But hotgluing is just right out. Shit's gross tbqh
>>
>>90269277
I'm not talking about you. A climate change skeptic betrayed the Koch brothers to announce that, through his Koch funded research, man made climate change was real. Why wasn't this all over the liberal media? The McRib was back. There's only so much room for need.

Speaking of news, Fox News had someone go on a mini rant about how male characters are handled in new Disney movies afte Frozen came out. No one really talked about Zootopia in the mainstream as far as I know. I wonder why that is.
>>
>>90269332
it's a movie of a cute animals of course it will have a shugarcoat cover on it but the way it shows the consecuences of the cultural diferences between animals is like a mirror of what is happening in Europe with the islamic refugees or in USA with diferent cultures and races living together and the problems this bring, at the end for a "children movie" is in some way... "redpilled"
(sorry for my bad english)

... but let's focus on cute animals, this is not the best place to talk about politics
>>
We all knew Zootopia was going to win, but we all wanted it to be Kubo.
>>
>>90269439
Subtle things like Judy calling Nick articulate make this very much about race.
>>
>>90269205
it's about prey and predators not about blacks and whites...
>>
>>90269484
ok i do have a question, like man made like we're causing it? cause no duh, or that people are doing it on purpose? cause that like tha same thing but worse.
but either way one dude saying that its research yielded a result is hardly news worthy. like unless he stumbled across some secret files or some shit, research needs to be tested again and again til its worth hearing about
>>
>>90269277
I'm not saying I am.

I'm saying that enough people are.
>>
>>90269526
>sugarcoating
>see that? that's a race thing. Yup.
>>
>>90269501
It also shows that those problems can be solved through mutual respect and effort in moving forward.

The problem with a lot of anti-racism stuff isn't that it exists, it's good to fight racism. but that it leaves kids with the understanding that you don't have to fight for a better world.
>>
>>90269526
Only because that's your experience of bigotry.

There's a lot of examples that you can find in there that are more about sexism.
>>
>>90269484
>I wonder why that is.
Honestly, because Disney had little faith in the movie (maybe due to its troubled production? Or maybe its complex themes) and so they failed to promote it. You don't release a movie in March if you believe it has a chance at the awards. Most of its popularity was through word of mouth.

>>90269524
I would've been happy with either.

>>90269526
Subtle things like Nick wanting to touch a sheep's hair because it's "just so woolly" make the race issue sort of muddy and nonspecific, and more about allusions than direct parallels. Coupled with stuff like Judy's role in the workplace (which does come off as a sexism thing), the overall message is a more general one about striving for personal betterment and pursuing your dreams, in spite of bad circumstances and bad odds. It's about life's inability to fit into neat little boxes, because "real life is messy."

You can thank Rich Moore for the more generalised tone. Byron's original story was very direct and on-the-nose about it.
>>
>>90269694
as I said of course it have a sweet mesage, its's a all public movie, but again it shows the problem and since this is a fantasy people get "what's happening with diversity"
I supose each one will se the movie mesage in a different way
>>
>>90269524
>we all wanted it to be Kubo

Speak for yourself.
>>
>>90269501
what >>90269694 said
nine times out of ten when people warn about the dangers of race/cultural mixing, it just betrays a lack of effort and empathy on their part
>>
>>90269746
Oh, sorry.

All the normal people wanted it to be Kubo.

Furfags wanted Zootopia because it's their pride and joy.
>>
>>90269524
>all
No I didn't
>>
>>90269800
I don't think it necessarily does, even though I think they're wrong. I think a lot of these people genuinely think that miscegenation is harmful for the human race. People generally believe what they've been told to believe. For most people, changing your beliefs is hard. Look at how long someone will look for evidence to support their belief. Compare it to how long someone will look for evidence against that belief.
>>
>>90269739
Thank you Rich Moore, your tone resulted in a better movie over all with better themes and tones
>>
>>90269872
who is Kubo?
>>
>>90269872
>All the normal people wanted it to be Kubo.

You mean all the Jap-o-philes.
>>
>the movie disney didn't care about won
>the movie disney gave a lot of attention to didn't win

What happened? And don't mention cute animals/furries
>>
>>90269986
>Zootopia
>movie Disney didn't care about

It made gangbusters for them. Regardless of how much support they gave it pre-release, they love it now.
>>
Why do people take this joke seriously?
>>
>>90269902
i guess, i mean i believe that they believe what they are spouting. but i think believing that means having a lack of empathy. it means seeing fellow humans as lesser due due circumstances beyond their control and for things as minor as race, or culture.
and then saying something as silly as "this Disney movie supports that! but not overtly cause ya know its supposed to be for everyone" its just
mental farts

Rango was by far the better choice and I say this as a big Tintin fan
>>
>>90271300
It was bland and predictable, but most of the backlash against it comes from the fact that it beat out better movies for the Oscar, primarily because it was Disney. And all of this, despite the fact that we totally don't care about the Oscars. I liked it, too, anon.

>Kimi No Na Wa deserves it more

Has it been dubbed?

No? Then fuck off

The only Oscar it could even qualify for is the Foreign Language category which means it probably wouldn't even have gotten a nomination anyway.
>>
>>90272116
Movies don't need to be in English or have a dub to be nominated for any award, including best animated movie. Foreign movies get nominated all the time.
>>
>>90265226
You are objectively wrong. You can personally like and prefer which ever one you want, but Lilo and Stitch isn't even close to Spirited Away, which is in the running for the best movie to come out so far since 2000.
