Good "girl cartoons" are ones that just happen to star a girl and aren't aggressive with pushing things like fashion, make-up, the color pink, or cute stuff unless it's doing it for semi-irony, like Star VS. or Powerpuff Girls. Shows like Korra, Mighty B!, or movies like Zootopia are good examples.

If you want to understand how lacking we are in shows with good girl protagonists, google up "Shows starring girl characters", see how many live-action shows pop up. Now google "Cartoons starring girl characters" and marvel at how half the results are fucking Powerpuff Girls.

The only reason girl / boy cartoons are made are typically to promote some new toy line that would sell to a specific gender.

The idea of a "girl" cartoon should not be confused with a cartoon who's lead rolls or major characters are female. For example, The Legend of Korra is show with a strong female lead and cast members. As much as everyone hates MLP it was a step in the right direction and of course there is Star Vs. when I first saw it I was nostalgic, it reminded me of the kind of shows for young girls made back in the late 90s and early 2000s. I do have a problem with princess movies and shows.

The princess' strength are almost always magical, a birth right as much as their royalty. The moral message of the stories rarely rise above trite declarations of feeling good and believing in yourself. There is no tribulation that can't be overcome with a song, no villain who can't be slain by a spunky attitude. Carefree happiness and self love are elevated above intelligence and perseverance. The princess story trivializes real issues it purports to fight, wrapping children up in the stupor of fantasy rather than enlightening them with the pursuit of positive qualities that work in real life. It's entertainment for kids, I get it.
