The cat has your pipe.

It's perfect. Maybe it's the acid talking, but I see your point.

The pipe is obviously a homage to René Magritte's famous surealist painting of a pipe. Since the goal of surealism was essentially that of revolution of any norm and commodity, I assume that Jon represents society and Garfield represents revolutionary art.
The fucking pipe does not exist, and Garfield is hitting Jon over the head with this fact and shocks his tiny burgeous world of commodity and control. Note that he is wearing a blue collared shirt and is consuming a newspaper; the conformist's media and the mouthpiece of those in power.
I'm a bit too tired to go into detail here, but it is brilliant actually.

Anyone want to spend money to get a framed version of this strip?

I feel like someone's trying to force a meme with this, like the Nutshack.

I feel like its sequel is vastly underrated.

Also Jon's face looks like a human ass. There's your subtle political statement right under your nose. Jim Davis despises newspapers and their readers and literally rubs it into their faces. Every day. Subversive to the bone.
>>
>>90197576
It's not a meme, it's just a great strip. Lots of people are just seeing it for the first time.
>>
>>90197670
>it's just a great strip
Not really, the punchline is just "Oh, that wacky cat, doing human things!"
>Lots of people are just seeing it for the first time
And why is that? Why is a random Garfield strip from the late 70s getting 20 threads made now?
>>
>>90197624
>Jim Davis despises newspapers and their readers and literally rubs it into their faces
Well he sure does a shit job of showing it when he puts out consistently good work like these >>90195828 >>90197605
I know Jim Davis-bashing is the popular thing to do, but here we have some unassailably good strips made by him in front of us.
>>
>>90195828
did you watch the entire hour long video? i did and im a changed man now
>>
>>90197752
Because John Barrymore III just did a one hour critical analysis of it for LasagnaCat.

Cats are red / green colourblind. In this panel, Garfield sits on a green floor behind a pinkish-red wall. A cat in this room would have a hard time differentiating the wall from the floor; add to that a cat's known spatial confusion and you have the makings of a cat rage room.
>>
>>90198180
And yet he placidly sits there, puffing on his master’s pipe. It’s all these little contradictions that make you realize this goes much deeper than the average reader (consciously) realizes.
>>
>>90198180
The floor changes to blue in next strip. But the walls become green.
>>
>>90198265
I feel that the purple pipe, being the only thing Garfield could accurately see in the room, is something of an anchor. It's a steadfast bastion in a world of chaos. Yet, obviously, inhaling tobacco fumes would be extremely bad for a feline's health, which serves as a commentary on how the only things that bring us serenity in this world can often shorten our time in it.
>>
>Now where could my pipe be?

Doesn't this kind of get at what we all ask ourselves? sort of a stand-in for the universal questions, but phrased so it stays down-to-earth and authentic, yet with all the implications still perfectly clear.
>>
>>90197761
It's not physically possible to put out daily content for 40 years straight without going stale at some point. The first 20 or so years of Garfield were and will always be God tier newspaper comics.

Consider that the first panel speaks directly to the reader.
Not even that, in fact, it speaks FROM the reader. The original experience, as first intended, was that the reader themselves be holding a newspaper, thus putting themselves in Jon's position.
In one panel, this set-up engages a self reflection in its audience. Unfocused from true meaning, we lose ourselves (or a pipe perhaps?) in a distraction (like a newspaper). When Jon asks "Where could my pipe be?", we ourselves are asking "Who am I? Where is my purpose?"
Jon's self, his purpose, his pipe, is with Garfield, as he is but a character in a comic and Garfield is his purpose. But I ask, for us all, will our own answers be as simple as a cat smoking a pipe?
The possibilities are both spectacular and terrifying.
