I'd have to go with roughly season 4, and more specifically, the Good Neighbors episode.

Complain all you want about other episodes in it being good, at least they didn't just start relying on annoying Squidward for "comedy."

Season 1-3 went full throttle in terms of good writing, season 4 gave up halfway and just spun out of control, and season 6 and onward just careened the whole series into an orphanage.
