Evangelion. It's worth noting that the two are totally different characters compared to Star and Marco, with a totally different relationship. The red head, Asuka, is an arrogant, violent tsundere, who wants everyone to pay attention to her due to her mother going crazy and committing suicide. Worst part is, the mother tried to make Asuka die with her, but in her madness she thought her doll was Asuka, and couldn't recognize her own daughter. This pretty much destroyed her self-esteem. The boy, Shinji, is a 'coward' (who's actually pretty awesome at times, just suffering from abandonment issues and being thrown into a war with cosmic horrors), who lost his mother at the age of three, and was then abandoned by his asshole dad. He was left to fend for himself, and because of this, he has serious issues with self-loathing because he blames himself for his dad abandoning him. The two have a pretty hostile relationship most of the time, with her seeing him as a rival and him just sort of accepting her domineering attitude. He does try to strangle her in the finale, though, and he had snapped at her multiple times as well.

I'd say so. A word of warning, it can get pretty fucked up in certain parts, and part of the reason for that is that the creator was suffering through depression at the time. So the ending of the series becomes nightmare fuelish and sort of faux-deep. It's still a good series though, so try watching a few episodes. It starts off slow but gets better as it goes on.

Actually, he took it better, because he still tried to be a hero. Even before the first fight, he tried to help an injured Rei when she fell, and agreed to get in the giant robot/cyborg and take her place. After, he still fought the angels, despite how painful and terrifying it was, even if he did run once or twice. He scalded his own hands opening Rei's plug in order to make sure she was okay, tried to be a friend to Asuka, put his life on the line several times, got mind raped repeatedly, and still came back for more. Shinji's not the typical mecha hero, but he's still a lot braver then people give him credit for, and certainly a much better person.
