This premieres today. I'm not sure what people expected from it, but it would seem to be the best reviewed "bad" movie in recent memory. It's currently sitting at 45% on rottentomatoes, which is leagues better than Norm of the North or The Nut Job.

>Bodi is eternally optimistic and wants nothing more than to play music. Conflicted between his sense of duty at home and pursuing his dream in the city, Bodi is determined to be in a rock band and make his dad proud.

I don't know if I can buy into reviews anymore. Lego Batman was universally beloved but I was really underwhelmed by that. I sort of feel like I have an obligation to watch Rock Dog anyway. I made a thread on /co/ about it back in 2015 when the trailer came out of Cannes.
>>

LB is okay, really fun if you're into Batman. also it's overshadowed by its predecessor- The Lego Movie. I dont even call it "sequel" it's more of a spinoff thus it doesnt live up to the original.

The very fact this movie exists is going to cause a whole lotta R34, mainly because of furries.

Still, seems like it's just gonna be another Trolls movie. Starts out with a lot of hype, mainly using stuff from this generation to get said hype. Movie comes out, and it's utter TRESH, winds up being described like how Nostalgia Critic talked about the modern The Lorax movie. It's not the worst of the aforementioned movies, but the plot is pretty dull and the characters are kinda cliche for a music-based movie.

Other than that, movie will probably be at least watchable. Unlike the Trolls movie, which just hopped on the bandwagon of trendy stuff and profiteered off childhood memories by making toys EXACTLY like the original.

Ice Age was unremarkable and the animals fell into uncanny valley too often, I wouldn't quite put it in the same category as Zootopia.
>>
I'm home now. The movie had a lot of charm. It certainly had more heart than Lego Batman. I never quite felt that the wolves were really threatening, and the whole thing with the fight club went nowhere and was resolved too quickly, but I don't really have any complaints.

Well, the yak constantly breaking the fourth wall was stupid as fuck, but it is what it is.

There's no shipping. Darma does refer to Bodi as cute, but not to his face. Still, she was adorable and the goat drummer was a much better character than I expected.

Angus was also a lot of fun. And Bodi is a good dog. I want to pet him now.

not my point. talking animal movies were always around, surfing penguins, ping pong rabbits. etc.

now that disney made their own furry movie, everyone thinks every next animal movie is aping zoot. which is bullshit.
>>
>>90187934
For the record, a woman and her kid arrived shortly after the movie started. The theater was pretty empty. Granted, not many people rush to the movies on Friday morning, when most kids are actually still in school.

I always watch my movies that early. Fewer lines, if any, and I can always get my favorite seat.

ice age is just animals talking they didn't get sexualized a lot
.
Madagascar is a step closer but still didn't see much.

Kungfu panda only really had Tigeress and viper if your into that. but they got attention.

the point is the animals are becoming more human and sexualized. When i said we're going to get alot more furries in the coming years its because the animals are getting closer to being human. so its easier to cross that line
>>
>>90189480
BOL Needed to spend more fucking time in the land of the dead. I hate that it was basically the 3rd act big spectacle but goddamn I wanted away more of the movie to be set there. They're not being sexualized now. You're just projecting. We don't really know a lot about future movies, but you can't just say "2018's Arctic Justice: Thunder Squad" has fox leads and therefore they want people to fuck them.

Bad example, since their eyes are too fucking big, but it's the only distant animal movie I know of off-hand.

>The graphic novel’s quite dark. For example, Bodi’s father is torn apart by wolves
>>
>>90191586
The graphic novel really has nothing to do with the movie. It just goes to show that the Chinese are quite capable of butchering a movie's source material as well.

I think I'm still the only person who watched it in this thread, aside from that one guy who magically claimed to watch it months ago.
>>
>>90191642
>aside from that one guy who magically claimed to watch it months ago.
The entire movie was posted here several months ago, when they were still looking to distribute here in US. I didn't watch it yet however.
>>
>>90191642

you know, this movie was co-created by the author of the comic.

is it butchering if it's his own creation as well?
>>
>>90191545
its not projecting. Parents will buy these movies and kids will watch them repeatedly and since they like X movie with talking animals they will get Y and Z and kid will watch a lot of animal movies. Kid gets a little older and all those chemicals start flowing. Young kids will start Sexual imprinting on what they see, Animals having relationships in the movies. Boys will find the female animals attractive. Girls will start wanting to be like the female animals and want the male animals.

Its how kids work. maybe if you knew anything about it you wouldn't throw around the words "you're just projecting" dumbass
>>
>>90191727
You were talking about how these movies are intentionally becoming more sexualized, but your argument here merely talked about the perception of viewers. But perceptions have always been that way. How is it any different than Lola with Space Jam, or 90s cartoons like Sonic the Hedgehog? People will always want to fuck things.

That doesn't mean contemporary movies are catering to it. All these movies want to do is make money, and with animation, it's still kids and families that do that.
>>
>>90191727
>>90191795

>>90192815
She's precious. In the movie, she's really nice, even if she does think Bodi is a nutjob when he first approaches them. When Angus shatters his hopes and dreams, she tries to get him to go eat lunch with her and the goat, and when he dejectedly ignores her, she later tries to bring him something to eat.

I just wish she got to do more. During the climax, the goat says he has an idea and the bus jumps into the city, but then it breaks down and they spend the rest of the ending doing nothing. They had no plan, nor did they have any reason of really being there. It was just a plot device to give Bodi's dad a chance to escape.

I suspect Darma was in the movie for less than ten minutes. Hopefully that will persuade more people to draw her, given how underutilized she was.

I'm not sure how old she is compared to Bodi. Bodi seems younger, and Darma said she was practicing in the park for years before she found a band.
>>

>>
The quiet one of the two main hench-wolves, Skozz, is the cutest of them all. He didn't get a character description/image on the site, as he doesn't say anything in the entire movie, but I really liked him.
>>

>>
>>90194614
Super cute. In one of the scenes, when he's wagging his tail as Angus plays music, he just looks adorable as hell.

He only gets sad a few times in the movie, which makes the scenes more potent. Most of the times, he's unbridled joy and optimism and it's really hard to dislike him.

Don't defend laziness. These movies cost literally hundreds of millions of dollars. You damn well better bring your A-Game when animating CG.

There are traditional hand drawn animated movies out there that put 100% of their time and effort into every scene and shot with one-third the budget.

Early reports have Rock Dog making less than $6,000,000 this weekend. Less than Norm of the North. Less than Alpha & Omega. This... it doesn't make sense to me. This movie actually has genuine effort behind it.
>>
>>90201397
>This movie actually has genuine effort behind it.
Does it have actual advertising behind it as well?
>>
I fear for the future of the animation industry. Each year, the bigger studios push technology further and further, but smaller studios can't possibly keep up. Rock Dog never had a chance of looking as good as a Disney, DreamWorks or Pixar movie, and it got panned for looking "direct-to-DVD" when it clearly has better quality than Alpha & Omega 4. That's what "direct-to-DVD" looks like.

People are creating impossibly high standards. First-time studios will become increasingly rare unless they have a bunch of big names behind the studio that can lure in some risky investors.

>>90202123
I've seen a number of commercials on ESPN if that counts. Movies with similar or less marketing did better.

Lionsgate at least started promoting the movie online back in December. It had trailers going back to 2015.

But those attract "no" investors. It's not the studios' fault. Companies don't just appear out of thin air with millions of dollars to spend on a movie. The money has to come from somewhere.

The more I watch, the more stupid their complaints are. That moronic woman literally said the magic that the dogs used came out of nowhere. Brad explained that it was setup at the beginning of the film, which had her say that's what she was talking about.

If it's explained at the beginning of the movie, how does it come out of nowhere? It was literally explained. They showed it in the prologue and then went into detail a few minutes later.

Fuck it, have a Darma drawing somebody drew.

There weren't many people when I watched it, either. Considering the movie made less than $1,000,000 on Friday, that's not surprising. The movie may end up making less money in the United States than it did in China, and it was severely handicapped in China.

And I still don't think the animation is "too bad for theaters". These people just have no understanding of what budget animation actually looks like.

Will the Chinese blame the US for this failure? They'll probably be more reluctant to outsource to American studios because of this. They had been doing that a lot, recently. Which makes things a lot more fun, just like this movie's universe. Like with Bodi and his dad's aura powers; perhaps its not something completely genetic only to Bodi's family, or certain mastiffs in general. Maybe it's something that everyone can learn if they dig deep inside them and harness themselves.

Imagine Darma getting a hold of this shit and becoming a type of mystical music guru like Bodi seems to be on the road being. Only she figures out a way to amplify hers by using lyrics and not just the music itself.

I wanted to see Darma let Bodi stay at her place, since he was presumably staying in the city for a while with no place to sleep. Then, despite the fact that she's several years older than him and he's probably not legally old enough to drink, get him drunk and take advantage of him.

But your fantasy is probably better than mine.

A lot of furry films were slated for release around the same time frame long before Zootopia came out, hell Disney themselves thought it was going to bomb
"Furry" movies tend to do decently because as humans, we find it easier to identify with characters with human like aspects more than humans, I.E., uncanny valley, so a lot of companies thought it would be a safe bet to make furry movies at this time
>>
>>90254644

>>90255531
Basically the way we perceive things based on how human-like they are
The starting point is like staplers and pencils, there's nothing human like about them and we know that
The first hump is objects that have human-like aspects and we relate to them, like robots with arms and legs or anthropomorphic characters
The pit in the middle is things designed to look like humans but they have to many flaws to look human and they disturb us, like robots designed to look like humans with dead eyes or the capture motion movies like Polar Express
The highest point on the pic refers to objects designed to look human and look so human that we see them as human
So basically you either can create things that are designed to look as human as possible and pay shitloads of money for it or just make something with human like aspects for less money and get similar results
>>
>>90255531
Uncanny Valley is the inbetween space of something that tries to evoke human emotions, apperance, and so on in its facial features. There's the low end where it's not highly detailed humanization, and the high end where it's more humanlike. However there's a curve called the Uncanny Valley where it just looks off. Deadness in the eyes, hyper detailed to the point where it doesnt look human, and so on. One example I can think of is the movie Mars Needs Moms.

I honestly thought so. But I don't normally go to movies to laugh. I seldom laugh. I enjoy the experience. I want to see new worlds and get to know new characters. That's what drives me to watch animation. So it's difficult for me to measure a movie, especially an animated comedy, when a lot of the reviews talk about how they didn't laugh. I didn't laugh during Zootopia, and I loved that movie.

That's not to say I don't find things amusing. Things that make me smile and what-have-you. But bust out laughing? That's rare for me.

Rock Dog is a cute movie with good characters. I really liked Angus far more than I expected and the animation on him was pretty good.

I just figured obtaining the village and eating the sheep was more of an ego/turf-war thing than actually killing and eating for food. Clearly, Linnux still holds a large grudge against Bodi's dad for driving his pack out so many years ago, and in the meantime he and his wolves just built up a mob ring of their own within the city and continued busting ass left and right. Maybe over the years the notion of that one tiny unobtainable village became an obsession with them (or rather just Linnux) that grew even more paranoid with what they believed was an army of magical dogs that could easily drive them away if they tried to invade again.

A mob of vicious wolves who run the darkest pits of a city and they can't take over one village full of sheep. I mean, the idea alone has really got to sting.

http://vocaroo.com/i/s02o7L6m1Co8

I complained too when I first heard about this movie. It's getting to the point of discrimination with these caricature stereotypes assigned to anthropomorphic animals. It's downright insulting to furries and otherkin for companies to continually play up these racial stereotypes. Furries have been dealing with this sorta thing for a long time and I for one am tired of it. It needs to fucking STOP. Not every fox needs to be a sly criminal, bunnies don't have to be oversexualized bubbly thumpers, and don't get me started on how they portrayed all the predators going crazy off a fucking drug. Come on. Cannibal is only on a rise in Papa New Guinea and that's among regular humans, it is not furries eating people. This whole issue has me worked up and I don't think laying out in the sun is going to calm me down right now. Fuck disney and fuck this movie.

I think it's safe to say that the yak's fourth wall-breaking monologue was the most awkward thing in the whole movie. He was only ever given the chance to speak, like, two or three times? What was even the point? They should've just had him narrate and be a mentor/side character for the rest of the feature since he really wasn't that important.

But we can all agree; Bodi is the nicest, cutest, doggy fluffball of cute that ever graced the screen. There's rarely ever a moment that completely emotionally destroys this guy. He just has the enormous neverending soft spot for everyone and everything. You can't help but want to cuddle the guy!

For a movie that's not making any money, it seems to really be making an enormous amount of people completely buttblasted to the point that if anyone even remotely calls this movie "okay" or "charming" (not at all saying its amazing, since everyone is well aware that it is a flawed film) they are somehow giving this movie unnecessarily "high praise". Its pretty universal that it is a very average to mediocre film, same with the video review in question. Anything else is just clear fapping to Bodi and Darma.

I don't even know where the Zootopia shit is coming from. Does that one guy even lurk?

He definitely doesn't lurk
They're from reddit anyhow
>>
>>90299248
He's got some good taste
Probably
>>
Which Rock Dog would you smooch?
>>
>>90302308

All of them
>>
Friiendly reminder this movie is 5.7/10 not 44% , misleading tomato.
>>
>>90190189
Disney has been doing it since 1973
>>
>>90197402
I sadly know exactly what that crop is from
>>
>>90186267
From the first trailers it looked "okay" I never really had high hopes for it, I may go see it if I need something to be entertained by
>>
Somebody finally draw a Bodi/Darma piece. It's just them kissing, but hey, it's at least a step in the right direction.
>>
>>90304124
why is it sad?
>>
>>90304276
And Darma is just as 'dude' as ever.
>>
>>90306337
GAAAY.
>>
Did Bodi experiment with the sheeps in his village
>>
>>90307393
Only Carl. That's why he felt the need to shower all of the time. He was constantly abused.
>>
>>90307438
I bet Carl top when it comes to Bodi
>>
>>90249616
eh, you can draw gorillaz paralells with pretty much any 4 piece set, and none of yours bar Trey hold up that well
>>
>>90307393
He's been isolated in the mountains since childhood, living in a village dominated completely by sheep with barely any women (from what I can see, anyway). He's pent up as fuck.

Thing is, he's just so innocent and carefree that I wonder if the very concept of sexuality has ever crossed his mind.
>>
From what I can tell from this thread the film has bombed around the world, when I saw a trailer for this I didn't thought it looked anything special but yikes
>>
>>90186267
Why the fuck does /co/ care about this garbage?

Literally, what is so special about it?
>>
>>90308972
The film really got shafted in China of all places, there was a spat between Rock Dog's film company and China's largest theater chain that prevented the movie from being seen in most of China. It made less than 6 million because of that
>>
>>90306337
That kiss is naughty as fuck.
>>
>>90309025
Oh, /co/'s at the 'It's dead but let's keep looking at the corpse for a little while longer' stage of Rock Dog.
>>
>>90309050

It really is

Love between two boys is forbidden, of course.
>>
>>90309063
Anon, pls. Don't you get tired of hanging out in this thread exclusively to bitch about Darma?
>>
>>90309129
Why would they bitch about Darma? They like him.
>>
I feel like I'm going crazy. This film has been out for a while now and its nowhere online. Are people just not bothering?
>>
>>90309162
Considering the empty theaters, it would be easy to record. Nobody cares enough to do it, however.
>>
>Rock Dog's rival movie company owns practically majority of the movie theaters in China
>They refuse to show Rock Dog cause it might cut into their own animated film profits
>Rock Dog bombs
Damn Bodi never stood a chance
>>
>>90309215
It stood a chance in the US. They've even been promoting it since December and put commercials on TV.

I expected it to do poorly, but not 11th place poorly. Not less than $1,000,000 on Friday poorly.
>>
>anrgy faggots coming in here to get mad about people liking a mediocre movie is that they know is mediocre
>this one faggot keeps trying to force the "Darma is a boy" joke too much
>Rock Dog got fucked hard in China and poor release date in US was basically a death sentence
Rock Dog had a hard life.
>>
>>90309276
Can somebody draw Bodi being taken out behind the shed and shot?
>>
>>90309059
It's a fuckable corpse
>>
>>90309162
I don't mind doing it
But I just need a good camcorder
>>
I don't think my theater is going to keep Rock Dog on for a second week. That's... brutal.
>>
>>90313573
It looks like the nearest movie theater (that's an hour away) isn't even getting it
>>
>>90313573
gosh, im almost depressed about this.

is there any animated movie that had it worse?
>>
>>90313701
There have been far more expensive flops. Hell, many studios work for years on an animated movie only to have it literally go straight to DVD. Hell, the people who made The Legend of Sarila didn't expect some stupid ass distribution company to buy the rights and then re-name the movie Frozen Land in an attempt to milk Disney's cow.

But the fact that Rock Dog got screwed over in China before bombing in the US hurts. It really added insult to injury.
>>
>>90313701
One of my all time favorite movies ever, the Thief and the Cobbler, has a pained history.
It's disheartening how there's alot of tragic stories in animation.
>>
So how much of the comic creator's soul did he have to sell to get this made?
>>
>>90317803
Being Chinese, he's probably used to other people taking ownership of his work and doing with it as they please.
>>
>>90317803
its not his anyways
it belongs to the government
>>
I don't know what I would add to make this movie better
I think its perfect the way how its "decent" tier
>>
>>90186823

>>
was i just not paying attention or something
but did anything happened when the fire went into the dry goods storage in the village?
>>
>>90319797
The fire also went into dryer goods.

But yeah, it didn't go anywhere. The fireworks went off, but that wasn't related to that. It was kind of a pointless scene.
>>
>>90320039
not even a sigh of relief?
damn something probably got cut
>>
>MFW none of the theaters near me aren't showing this
>>
>>90322601
Lionsgate and Open Road Films have terrible trackrecords. They're the ones who release most of these low budget animated movies. Many theaters are reluctant to carry them.
>>
So what is this dog from the water tribe or something?
>>
>>90323925
Fire tribe
>>
It does suck that the animation team behind this is gonna take the blame for the failure of this film when it got fucked over in China and Lionsgate is horrible at marketing
>>
>>90325132
I can't blame this on marketing. I think people just saw the trailer and decided that the movie was inferior and deserved to be mocked. All of the e-celeb critics bashed the movie like it was the next Norm of the North. They were doing that long ago. Film Brain, from That Guy With The Glasses, mocked the movie back when he barely knew what it was.

Dude I bet tons of Disney animators drew lewd shit on their own time
>>
>>90325818
It's possible, but I suspect many companies would contemplate firing employees over such things. They're very protective of their image.
>>
>>90262649

Anyone know what type of haircut the guy on the right has? I don't want to have to show my barber this picture.
>>
>>90210375
I wouldn't know. Haven't read any reviews

I guess my bias is deep seated since when I was an Asian kid and saw Hong King Phuey. Fucking awful. And he was lazy as fuck janitor

Tho it's interesting that the original creator of Rock Dog featured what appears to be a tibetan mastiff dog as a main character
>>
>>90325861
Roy Disney fired a guy (I forget who) after overhearing a joke he made about making an independent animated porn film about Minnie Mouse. I think if you were going to draw or mention anything on shit like that, it better be in incredibly private circles.

There's no doubt that Disney animators, or any animators partaking in children's entertainment have this pent up desire to go all-out and draw or write something lewd or vulgar. Everyone remembers that trippy-as-fuck Rugrats storyboard of Stu loosing his mind in front of Tommy. Not to mention that a lot of animators who took part in making Heavy Metal were especially relieved to actually let loose on a project after working as assistants or back-up animators to Disney movies and cartoon shows.
>>
>>90328301
I see a necrobumper worried the thread would rightly die

>>90328514
No idea. I don't even think it was apart of any episode. I think they just threw it together just to screw around.
>>
At this point, I'd be surprised if the movie makes it past $10,000,000 in the US.
>>
>>90331197
another necrobump to keep the furrybait thread from dying. Can't let it die can you shill? I'm sure it was JUST a coincidence

If it's any consolation, I doubt there will be another thread. However, I've been following this movie since 2015 and I enjoyed watching it. I wish people had more to say about it, as I genuinely want to talk about the movie.
