Penny's last major role before that episode, The Misunderstanding, showed that Gumball, besides for two misunderstandings at the begining and the end, cared for Penny in a friendly and Romania way. Penny's last major role before The Misunderstanding, The Romantic, was basically The Ex except replacing Rob with Penny (Penny sending out one heart eyed emoji instead of the usual three was enough for Gumball to believe Penny didn't love him as much as she used to).
