Season 1 feels weak in comparison to 2 in a lot of ways but also holds up pretty well on its own too.

It even sort of feels like it could've stood on its own if just a few things changed. The St. Olga's and Toffee arcs, Marco's relationship with Jackie developing a bit, even how Skullnick's perspective switches from the beginning and end of the season.

God, Just Friends works on so many levels.

At first, Marco fucks up. He thinks that Jackie and Star should go on without him. But Jackie doesn't just forgive him, she actively pursues him and looks for his company. While Star shied away from a night alone with Marco in favour of bringing Jackie along.

Then later on, when they're singing, Jackie pulls Marco up to sing with her, but then Star butts in. The focus of the song is mostly on Marco and Star singing, which in any sitcom would be the moment Marco realizes he has feelings for Star. But in this series, the focus shifts BACK to Jackie and Marco making out.

And that's Just Friends. Jackie and Marco have something transcendent, something that Star and Marco can never achieve.

Jackie forgives Marco for things he's done wrong and shows him he means more to her than that. Star slaps ice cream out of Marco's hands because he doubted her for a moment. Marco and Jackie are lovers. Marco and Star are Just Friends.

Marco's fine with going to a concert called "Love Sentence" with Star. He's not afraid of the connotations. It never crosses his mind. They are Just Friends.

The fact that Marco and Star sing romantic songs at each other while brushing their teeth doesn't make Marco blink. They are Just Friends.

It's fine if Marco sings with Star for a bit at the concert even though it's Jackie's favorite song. Because, in the end, Marco kisses Jackie. Marco and Jackie are lovers. Marco and Star are Just Friends.

Just Friends is an episode, even a song, about the impenetrable wall that exists between Star and Marco. Star isn't an issue, she's not an obstacle, she's not a nuisance, she's not a threat. Because Marco and Jackie are lovers, and Star and Marco are Just Friends. There is no problem. Star doesn't even register in Marco's or Jackie's minds as a threat.

Because she and Marco are Just Friends.

I guess I like the implication that her similarity to Eclipsa also means a tendency toward darkness, which recent episodes have also been implying. Like that level of skill combined with her inexperience, rebelliousness, and general emotional instability makes her potentially really dangerous. It's more layered than just the more Season 1-ish "isn't Star wacky, look how destructive she is" view.

I think now with the cleaved wand, efforts to use less magic, loss of the spellbook and generally more competent enemies (or at least fewer chances to beat up incompetent enemies) means she's no longer as powerful as in the first season when not using dark magic.
