Haven't had this thread in a while. What cartoons have Japanese dubs that you like?

Mine has no voice acting, but it's a nice song.

>I heard that ATLA B3 wasn't dubbed in Japanese until last year

The dub got cancelled early into Book 2. They continued the dub with 90% of the original cast last year as a Netflix exclusive.

For the best. Mainstream Japanese audiences hated ATLA because they viewed it as anti-Japanese propaganda. Putting it on Netflix makes it more niche so only those diligently interested in foreign animation will seek it out, rather than it getting mixed in with "inoffensive" foreign cartoons on a satellite network.

>>
>>90167181

Fire Nation. Each Kingdom in Avatar is based on a different Oriental culture. The evil imperialistic Fire Nation, who invade, conquer and oppress the other nations, is based on Japan.

The Japanese are EXTREMELY sensitive about how foreign media portrays them and routinely ban or censor outside media that satirizes or criticizes them. The episode of the Simpsons where they visit Japan is banned from home video and broadcast. Likewise, multiple episodes of South Park that made fun of Japan were skipped on TV and DVD.

The fact that they're finishing ATLA via Netflix is actually really surprising; usually they're so strict about that stuff it would have been banned from release forever.

And the educational corner program at the end.

It's a common thing for TV Tokyo/Aichi. They hacked 3 minutes out of the past few Transformers shows to make room for the opening, ending and promotional segment at the end.

What's really short sighted is that they made the cuts first, then recorded the dialogue, so the cut footage couldn't be restored for the DVD releases.

The Japanese dub American cartoons NOW the way we dubbed Japanese cartoons in the 80s.

Toru Ohira was FANTASTIC as Homer. He hit all the vocal beats perfectly and even transitioned out of the "Walter Mathau" era from the early seasons into the legit Homer at an organic pace. Glad he got to redub The Simpsons Movie (after they'd initially recast him) so fans could hear him one last time.

>still Animated was the best dub for Transformers,

Ehhhhhhh.

Casting was good, and it usually is in the Japanese TF dubs, but the "translation" was awful.

Iwanami Yoshikazu, the guy who did the Japanese localizations of all the TF shows from Beast Wars to Prime, fuckin sucked. He was hardcore into adlibbing and turned all the shows into self-parodies, deviating from the scripts entirely. So there are lots of Fourth Wall breaking jokes and prattle and all the characters are aware that they're just actors in a cartoon on TV.

The voices are good, but if you can actually understand the dialogue the dubs are terrible.

What they did to Prime was ridiculous. As I understand it, they were marketing Prime directly to small children, rather than keeping it flexible like the original. There was also a major lack of foresight and planning on JAP Prime, as they didn't get to air all the episodes, including the final episode, and had to piece together a cop-out ending at the last moment with Megatron and Optimus Prime preparing to have a "Final Battle", with the whole thing ending on a cut to black.

Prime was really bad, yeah.

Luckily, Robots in Disguise/Adventure is aired on a satellite network so it isn't too fucked up via timeslot scheduling. No edits for time, no educational corner program, and since Iwanami isn't head of localization, the scripts are translated faithfully.

However, because it's on a satellite network it's only getting a fraction of the viewership previous TF shows got when they were on broadcast networks, so it isn't making any waves over there.

>Is it fair the say that Americans usually have more dynamic mouth movements than in the case of anime, so the Japs have to work a bit harder to make words fit?

If you're speaking in terms of animation, yes, American produced cartoons put a greater emphasis on lip syncing because we do the dialogue recording first and animation second.

In Japan, outside of major motion pictures, it is done the opposite way. All animation is done first with no lip sync (just mouth open/mouth closed) and then the actors try to match their performances to the animation timing. So essentially, all Japanese voice acting is overlay, even when it is domestically produced.

Every new episode gets fansubbed on Nico within 24 hours of the US broadcast, so it has a dedicated following.

MLP has little to no mainstream appeal, however. The show got canned after season 2 and the EG movies have been Netflix exclusives.

87 series got dubbed 3 different times in Japan. Longest running one ran for 102 episodes on a Broadcast Network, which is almost unheard of for a foreign cartoon.

The 2003 TMNT cartoon didn't do so well and ended at 2 seasons. And as mentioned, the 2012 did worse and only made it 1 season. TMNT doesn't have the same appeal in Japan as it used to.

Still, Japan does have quite a high standard for VA work so if you insist on listening to a show not made by Anglos AND are fluent in Japanese, it is actually a pretty good choice.

Think Eng vs (non-existent) Jap dub of Wakfu if you can't stand French for some reason.
