After he killed the boy aquaman had a moment where he could have killed him, and manta pleaded for his life. If he really hated aquaman that much he would have taunted him right to his face instead pleading for his life and then afterwards bringing up the dead kid every time they meet. Zolomon is the one who wants to make WALLY a better hero through tragedy. He felt that Wally had it easy in life and wanted to show him how hard it is to get up after non-stop tragedies.

Thawne wanted to make Barry a worse hero through childhood tragedies, harsh enough that he'd be emotionally weakened, but not enough to make him go crazy and thus never become the Flash.

Pre-crisis Thawne was also very different from the New Earth Thawne that most people know. He never was the Flash's fanboy, but rather thought him a fool for using the speed powers for altruism instead of self-profit. He did crimes for fun, because there was almost no crime in the 25th century, and eventually even became a heroin drug diller in the 20th century after corrupting Central City police. After some time, his M.O. changed completely into the direction of trying to steal Barry's life, stealing his face and then trying to take his wife for his own (one of those plots included putting nanorobot bombs inside of her that would generate massive earthquakes every time Barry was nearby, so that Zoom could "save the world" by taking the two apart). Eventually Iris finally rejected him, so he killed her by vibrating a head through her brain (she was resurrected by her secret parents from the 30th century, but that's beside the point). Having a private eulogy, Zoom then had his gang find him a girl with features similar to Iris and gave her to the plastic surgeon to make an exact copy of Barry's wife.

He was also the most successful member of the Wizard's Secret Society, but botched their final mission because he tried to make moves on the Black Canary while in the body of Hal Jordan.
