This is a well-documented phenomenon that sociologists have applied to The Matrix (Keanu's singular expression is a neutral mask that allows the audience to live through him) and internet book reviewers have applied to Twilight (I'm sure all of you heard the "Bella has no personality and that's why people like her!" refrain back then)
Identifying strongly with a character is fun, or at least enjoyable. So, if people (in this case, women, muslims, fatties, blacks, whatever) see characters that they perceive as having the same problems/opinions/looks as them, of course they like the character. They don't get many chances to experience representations of those parts of their lives (sure you see some women, but what about black women? Muslim black women? You can be a black muslim woman internally distiguishes herself from a white christian woman and perceives herself as having different problems/opinions). So of course they're going to champion what they get and blab relentlessly about more. When you're hungry, you talk about food. When you're in a minority that you don't see accurate representations of in media, you talk about it.
