I thought this was supposed to be a Christian story. Why did Willis invoke Greek mythology by having Joyce tear out her eyes in the last panel?

Also, to nobody's surprise, the password is "unraveling". Here's a panel preview for 30 May 2017.

Because they're haven't been enough gays in the strip this week

If you're going to go nowhere with the story at least make a fucking joke
>>
>>90151995
The joke is that Joyce is apparently okay with lesbianism now, but not polyamorous relationships.
>>
>>90151776
>Carla is capable of differentiating love and abuse

Not buying it, because apparently poor, poor pitiful Carla was so harshly abused by her hateful parents... who custom engineered her a commercial-quality toy, and ponied up for the premium gender reassignment and a private dorm room.
>>
I wouldn't be surprised if he made this strip just to have an explanation for a future pin-up where Grace, Mandy, and Sierra are all boning each other.

I also wouldn't be surprised if he's only remembering that Grace and Mandy exist because he wants more characters to fill up his hallway.
>>
>>90152227
>I wouldn't be surprised if he made this strip just to have an explanation for a future pin-up where Grace, Mandy, and Sierra are all boning each other.

Does he need one? I mean their SEMME squad was basically "hedonistic sexpot team"
This is just more of him careening back towards old ships.

Carla was so heavily oversheltered that her personality started to disintegrate.
>>
Carla is ancap
>tells Joyce "you're owned by me now"
>physically attacks mary only after Mary violated the NAP destroying Carla's hardware
She probably couldn't afford to rent her daddy's death squad after the loan for sex reassignment surgery.
This all makes sense now.
>>
>>90152357
Wait, Grace/Sierra is another strip from the Walkyverse?

That makes three now, at least: Leslie/Robin, Mike/Ethan (via antics), and this one. What's going on with Willis bringing back old ships?

alt right isn't friendly to trans though
>>

i apprenciate the image
like when all these characters had one look it was easy to identify the glasses wearing redheads but god Willis' art is not at the point when he can start varying his shit up like this.

>>

That's probably the worst part of it all.
>>
>>90152765
>>90152821
Showering at night and single dorm room make it easy to infer that Carla is pre-op. Willis should have shown that Carla only showers when no one else is around to hint that she's transsexual a long time ago.
>>
>>90152891
but then Carla walked down the hallway in a wet towel with other people in it

Willis has no internal logic
>>
>>90152765
You don't need to know what they characters have between their legs. It doesn't matter, shitlord.
You do need to know they weren't happy with what they were born with though. That's very important.
If you want to see what all the other characters have between their legs, buy the latest pornagraphique available now exclusively on slipshine.
>>
>>90152850
i mean for some people that enough, gender dysphoria is weird and inconsistent
but mostly i was wondering because much hemming and hawing has been made of her being Miss Moneybags and having coddling parents so i figured if she wanted surgery she'd have it.
and either way taking hormones would be a good way to create cheap drama for her, having some antagonist deliberately block her from them or something.
though now that i think about it that'd be dumb cause if shes taking hormones and shes at a place where she can pass well enough it'd take weeks if not months of denying her hormones to make an appreciable difference.
though she'd probably get ill al the same
mostly i wanted to know if she had wiener or not still.
>>
>>90153008
ive sen the porn and it makes it painfully obvious that Willis designs his characters with clothes as the bottom layer.
their anatomy becomes weirdly inconsistent wen naked and he draws sex very awkwardly.
and thats just the core concepts, his panel flow and layout tell me he can't draw an action sequence to save his life. which is fine for a guy who's biggest sequential art influence seems to be newspaper comics, but for a guy that likes batman so much you d think he'd know how to make an action feel natural and identifiable between panels. as it stands its all just bad poses and awkward sex faces.
if i could id tell him to check out Ovens or LittleFroggies work on the site that hoats him cause they makes some damn good and damn good looking sex comics
>>
>>90152891
Willis could have done a LOT more to show that Carla was trans. But in attempting to avoid outright telling that Carla was trans, he ended up making sure he didn't even show that she was trans until he needed to make a plot out of it.

>>90153015
I'm not too big on LGBT issues, but the one thing that pisses me off the most is how people treat dysphoria as a temporary sort of condition. But that's not how it works, and that's never how dysphoria has worked.
Dysphoria is not a mote of dust that gets in your eye and makes you blink a lot to get rid of it. Dysphoria is not a popcorn kernel that gets stuck in your mouth between your tooth and gums that you need a toothpick to pull out.
Dysphoria is the spot under your skin that you wish was never there. Dysphoria is the divet in the roof of your mouth that you can't stop tonguing no matter how much it hurts. Dysphoria is the one arm that's just slightly shorter than your other arm.

Dysphoria isn't something you get. Dysphoria is something you have.

Anyways, that's my soapbox on the subject.
To answer your question, we like to pretend she has a massive penis that Mary worships like a new God.
>>
>>90152357
Was Sierra part of that squad?
>>
>>90153015
It's possible she's had an orchiectomy but not full SRS. Plus given her wealth and parents she was probably on puberty blockers then went straight to female hormones.

>>90153173
I prefer Carla to have Schrodinger's cock; whether it's a mighty cock or delicate, feminine penis depends entirely on the lewd.
>>
>>90151776

>three girls are poly lesbians and thats the entire joke

>>
>>90151776
so is it just me, or has willy slid into the level of inadequate where it's not good enough for praise, but not bad enough to be an interesting autopsy?
>>
>>90153642
Yep. A good portion of the bisexual women were part of that squad.

>>90153766
It does make you wonder when Carla realized she was trans and when she told her parents.

>>90153818
Bisexual. Not that it matters, because we are unlikely to see them date any men. Ever.
>>
>>90151776
The design of Carla's jacket makes it look like she has a pointy boob.

Also, how likely are they to be doing this out in the hallway? Wouldn't they like.... go to someone's room? They wouldn't go to Sierra's, since her roommate is Dorothy, who has a stick up her butt. But if Mandy is fine with it, then why not do it there? Or the community room? Dorm hallways are not very wide. They don't seem to be good places for random makeouts.

Also, does Grace ever have her eyes fully open?
>>
Can you imagine making out with someone who covers half their face with hair? Hair in your mouth all the damn time.
>>
>>90155953
You just made me realize that we can't see Sierra's other eye through her hair.

Why tf do we see Becky's then?
>>
>>90155987
Well Sierra's hair is like pure 000000 black so it'd look too fucked even for Willis. Also 'has half a face' is one of maybe three design traits Sierra has so he can't break that.

It's a realization all of us have had.

I even had that realization a few times, but there's something about it that makes me want to come back to it at times. Talking about it here is the most constructive way of dealing with that.

I've talked a little bit about the addiction model here before, so here's a quick recap:

The way gambling works is that it tricks you into thinking you have a chance of winning. You can pay $9 per spin, and every 3-7 spins, you'll get a small payout of less than the $9 you're using per spin.

Because you get these small wins, your brain tricks itself into thinking that you're close to getting bigger wins.

The odds of big wins are really low, but the machine and its payouts are designed to make you think the odds are higher than they actually are.

Willis uses this model, but it's probably not intentional. There will occasionally be a flash of insight or something that borders on funny, so you trick yourself into thinking that maybe the comic will get better.

Example:
>It's super-depressing right now? Well, there was that one storyline that made you giggle a while back. Maybe he'll do something like it again later on.

The characters have the potential to be interesting and complex, but every time Willis looks like he's going to do something with that, he ruins it and makes it cheap. Because he occasionally gives us a nugget of something that's not a total turd, we can't help but hope that he'll do something with these characters that's meaningful or at least interesting.

No matter how much we hope for it, it's not going to happen. But our brains are stupid, and we also like to have a sense of closure. We want to know what will happen to these characters. With how he's extended everything out by several years, we keep hoping that closure will happen, and then we realize it's only been a month.

Here's a fact for you: each week of school is represented across the span of one real-life year.
>>
>>90156932
god damn this was not the actual spot on analysis I was expecting. good post.

The sad reality of it is that in another four or five years he'll be ready to move on and draw another comic and end it with some super cop out ending around Christmas time in-universe with dozens of dangling plot threads

just fucking shoot me senpai

I'm surprised they haven't. A married white man with children whose day job is drawing lesbians, and occasionally draws lesbian porn of characters he's drawn since childhood.
>>
>>90156932

I'd agree with your addiction analysis, but replace "nuggets of potential quality" with "porn".

I think I'm only here out of the vague, impossible possibility that he'll make awful porn of certain characters.

That he made a lewd of Mary, despite me declaring it an impossibility, is that "small win" you speak of.

I remember a story from a friend who was in the army. This friend had another friend who hadn't gotten laid, so his squad buddies took him to a brothel to pop his cherry. He was promptly thrown out on his ass for fucking his companion in the manner he'd seen in the porn films he'd so frequently enjoyed before.

I don't know what made me think of that.

>The Girl Who Couldn't See

>There once was a girl named Joyce. This adorable home-schooler finally made it to college. The big leagues!

>One drawback: She couldn't see.

>But this cheerful girl didn't let that get her down! She used a voice recorder during class so she wouldn't have to worry about taking notes. And sometimes, her classmates would type up their notes for her, which her computer was able to read aloud for her.

>Although everything seemed to be going well for her at college, the first time she'd ever been away from home, Joyce met a tragic fate when her friend Dorothy brought her to a party.

>While Dorothy abandoned her to do an interview, Joyce found a friendly group of people doing role-playing games. They were playing Call of Cthulhu. She volunteered to play with them. It was exciting to play a game that wasn't designed by Christians!

>She invested herself fully into the game and was able to create a Seer, with the GM's help. The GM, Ryan, gave her the ability to see beyond, to see what the other players could not.

>A tear rolled down Joyce's face. "If only I could see for real."

>"Maybe... you can." Ryan placed his hand over hers.

>"How so?" the timid girl asked.

>"As a fellow Christian, I was hesitant to play this game for the first time," Ryan said. "But I learned a lot. And they were right: games like these do have occult contexts."

>A chill ran down Joyce's spine. She tried to pull her hand away from the man. But he gripped her tighter.

(end of part 1)
>>
>>90166038
>>90166381
>"No, Joyce. Let me help you see."

>The entire group linked their hands together and chanted an ancient song, the likes of which Joyce had never heard.

>Her eyes fluttered shut. No. This couldn't be happening. Why were they doing this to her?

>Everything went silent. She opened her eyes. And she wished she hadn't.

>Now Joyce really could see beyond. The problem? The beyond was much closer than she had thought.

>Wrapped around every bookshelf, every person, every window, every door were unholy creatures. The kind of creatures one only saw in nightmares.

>Something slithered around her neck and whispered in her ear: "Isn't this better, Joyce?"

>"No! No! Why did you do this?" Joyce sobbed. She'd never asked for this.

>Ryan held her hand again, as a green tentacled creature crawled up her arm. "Now you can see, Joyce!" His euphoria was bone-chilling.

>Something tapped Joyce on her shoulder. She screamed and fainted, as Cthulhu himself descended down her throat and into her mind.

>She was never seen again.

I agree, and I wouldn't put her on campus any more than she has been. What I'm thinking would be more like Joyce's calls to Becky or home, or the texting stuff recently. It could just be from Ethan's point of view, with him reading and commenting on her work.

Riverdale is stupid enough to be likable. It doesn't try to be smart or different. It's in a "so bad it's good" kind of tier.
DoA is too stupid to realize it's unlikable. It tries too hard to be smart and comes off as cringing.

They're both soap operas at heart. Riverdale just has proper narrative flow. I really think that if you gave a competent writing team a bulletpointed summary of DoA plotlines and characters they could turn out a pretty decent show.

>DoA is too stupid to realize it's unlikable. It tries too hard to be smart and comes off as cringing.
The only reason DoA isn't an epic soap opera is because Willis insists on shoehorning unfunny jokes everywhere. It's got some great story arcs, and if he just cut out all the strips that break up the drama with attempts at comedy, or the ones where you get 3 panels of drama and character development followed by a joke in the very last panel, it would actually be a pretty good comic.

Nah, I understand where it's coming from.
I just feel like there's something off with Willis incorporating it as background flavor while also minimizing the role of an almost-rape victim in her own story about almost being raped.

Mostly I'm just still pissed about Joyce being pushed aside for Amber and Sal's team-up.

>Do people actually like Mike?

He's almost the only reason I keep on bothering to come to these threads. Him being a grounded asshole, in this fucking carnival mirror reflection of humanity that Willis has wrought, is one of the last things about this strip I enjoy anymore.

Panel 4 legit made me chuckle.
>>
>>90179880
But how grounded is he? Because I'm still pretty goddamn sure that for all his scheming to get Danny to man up and take Ethan for his own, Mike has done a piss-poor job of seducing Ethan while Danny is actually watching.

>>

>his scheming to get Danny to man up and take Ethan for his own
His stated purpose is to seduce one of them to turn the other "into a jealous whimpering mess"

I'm not sure how that is going to cause any manning up. But you're right, he should be doing it where Danny can see.
>>

There's only two ways to rationalize why Mike is doing it based on that "jealous whimpering mess" line: Either he wants to hook the two up and take credit for it, or he's an actual dick who people somehow tolerate.

Like, seriously, Mike hasn't done anything worth sticking through for.

I believe this is explicitly the case. As much as it doesn't make any goddamn sense for anyone who isn't Ethan, and not even him, if he had the least amount of backbone.

Like, Mike genuinely tried to sabotage Walky's first relationship and apologized by trying to ruin it again. I dunno why Walky would ever talk to him again.

>>

I feel like Mike is actually a character Willis legitimately likes and didn't at all intend for his fans to despise so much.

Whereas he actually doesn't care for someone like Mary, meaning he'll make her more and more unpleasant and dump punishment after punishment upon for his fans' catharsis, he might actually try to do the opposite with Mike, attempting to win his fans over to liking him somehow.

At least, that's my speculation.

>>
>>90181394
I'm mostly a fan of Joyce's evolution from a super strict old testament christian to a more lenient one, because it's written from experience. Also Sal and Walky's relationship as the unfavorable and the favorite of their parents and how that effected both of them differently: Sal became a delinquent starved for her parent's love, while Walky a manchild who never learned how to grow up and survive without his parents constant hovering.
>>
>>90178734
Ok, so this is the first thing that I feel like Dorothy legit wouldn't put up with. She wouldn't put up with sweatpants jeans, why would she be fine with dirty underwear? Unless Walky has somehow planned all his encounters to be with clean drawers.
>>
>>90185750

I think Joyce's arc was better written during It's Walky (surprise, he's retreading plot-threads!), despite some of the more fantastical elements.

Realizing that ,according to her beliefs, a good person she knew who had died was barred from heaven or even cast to hell, and having to reconcile that, was a pretty good little arc.
>>
>>90181280
>Maybe she was in class halfway across campus?
It's morning, though. Everybody's only now waking up.

>>90185750
>Joyce's evolution from a super strict old testament christian to a more lenient one
Personally, I feel like Joyce's evolution would be better if it were more gradual and if it was less bumpy. By gradual, I mean I'd like something with more subtlety, in that events in Joyce's life that affect her religious beliefs aren't as blatant or as grand as "I was almost raped" and "My best friend was kidnapped" or "There are lesbians in the hallway and I must act silly". Something like that.
And by "less bumpy" I mean that Willis seems to want to put Joyce on both extremes, from having little to no faith in God to being Jesus' Number One #1 Fan. It should be smoother.

>Sal and Walky's relationship as the unfavorable and the favorite of their parents and how that effected both of them differently
This could have been a good storyline to examine if Willis didn't wreck it by saying that their parents were just racist and Walky was born whiter than Sal. As we've said before in these threads, you could get more out of Sal's feelings by having her blame racism when it was always her own actions as a miscreant and a troublemaker that caused her parents to like her less than Walky.
>>
>>90152717

>I never read a page of the Bible and I don't know the difference between cultural norms and biblical teachings.

ftfy
>>
>>90185976
I think that Sal and Walky should be switched. Sal as a goofy, immature womanchild to get attention because her parents paid more attention to Walky and Walky as an abrasive loner who robbed a convenience store out of teenage rebellion against helicopter parents.
>>
>>90152717
>you cannot do that with polygamy
nigger, read any book of the bible ever. Men taking multiple wives was all but encouraged...king solomon had something like 200 wives, and even king david, who was god's poster boy, only fell out of favour when he got some dude killed so he could bang his wife.
>>
>>90186034
That might work, but I'd have to see it in action.

In the end, though, it's all just Willis lashing out at the very concept of having parents. Except for his own kids, of course. He's going to be the cool dad that he never had himself. That's sure not to backfire at all.
>>
>>90185976
>This could have been a good storyline to examine if Willis didn't wreck it by saying that their parents were just racist and Walky was born whiter than Sal. I took that to mean Walky looked whiter than Sal, because she got curly black hair while Walky got straight white hair. I think it would be interesting if Sal was more interested in being "black", doing black things, following black politics, etc.... while the rest of her family (even her black father) acted more white. But I'll admit the only real evidence I have of that is her reluctance to straighten her hair.
>>
>>90186034
Speaking from personal experience, when you grow up with parents who always took care of everything for you/babied you until the day you left for college, it's really hard to transition into the real world and do things like set your own schedule/go to all your classes/study when suddenly there's nobody making you.
>>
>>90186083
That would be a far better way of showing how Sal is "blacker" than Walky, despite the two having the same skin color.

But no, apparently for Willis being black means that you're failing math classes, rob convenience stores, and shack up with teachers to try and get better grades.
>>
>>90186083
The problem is that she isn't reluctant to straighten her hair, she's apparently been consistently straightening her hair for years despite not living with her parents since she was 13. Hell, the flashbacks show she didn't start straightening her hair until after the robbery.

>>90186060
You'd obviously need to change some stuff up, but I think it could work fine. It would also help explain and recontextualize some of their actions in the story. Sal sleeping with Jason for a good grade works better with her being immature and childish, Dorothy's attraction to Walky makes more sense if he's the bad boy with the mysterious past who doesn't talk like a retard half the time, and Walky's refusal to talk with Dorothy about his school struggles make more sense because he figures she'll start treating him the way his parents did.

Though for the inter-sibling conflict to work fully either Walky still needs to be the favorite in spite of everything or for their parents to have immediately tried to mold Sal into Walky once they shipped him off.
>>
>>90185976

>you could get more out of Sal's feelings by having her blame racism when it was always her own actions as a miscreant and a troublemaker that caused her parents to like her less than Walky.

Indeed. Might be he even considered it at some point (or not, hell if I know). But having spoken to his fans and mentioning this exact possibility, they have been ardently, indignantly clear: if it turned out her parents aren't simply racist, than it's equivalent to saying all racism ever is false and fake.

Also, I'm a transphobic racist for suggesting it.
>>
>>90186714
You could counter by pointing out that such black and white thinking means that biracial kids have to adhere to a rigid identity group and that people in mixed relationships don't actually love each other.

It occurs to me that no black woman would want her hair to be as long as Sal's. There's this thing called "shrinkage."

When I was teaching, I had a student whose hair went down to her shoulders. Over the weekend, she had her hair braided. Not only was the hair all the way past her waist, but the braids were also wrapped on top of her head, so the hair was even longer than what you could visually tell.

Again, her hair was shoulder-length. When you style black hair, it tends to go to a different length. If Sal ever braided her hair, she would look like freaking Rapunzel.

It's also difficult to maintain black hair, especially when it's that long.

It is rather baffling, considering all the drama about where Ruth is going to live and her shadowy offscreen grandpa and shit, how little focus is given to the logistics of coming back from getting institutionalized

I mean, at the very least, there'd be talks with school officials in charge of making sure students don't go mad with stress. Working out missed classes with teachers. Figuring out what needs to be done in order to prevent it from happening again.

Also, if Ruth is coming back on this floor, it should just be to get her stuff so she can move to a new dorm. One, it'd be incredibly stressful for her to stay in a place where everyone saw her at her lowest moment (well, one of them, at least). Two, unless she outright lied to her therapists, there's no way they'd let her stay on the same floor as Billie. She's going to fall into bad habits as easily as if she was living in a liquor store. But she is going to stay on this floor, because Willis doesn't have enough characters on ice to populate a new dorm.

Say what you want about Jacques, but at least he's willing to introduce new areas and characters instead of forcing everything to happen in the same two or three environments.

She went in on Sunday, stayed in Monday and Tuesday and right now it's Wednesday morning.

Everyone rushes to the hallway for lesbian drama.

That's proved to be true so far.

It's actually a pretty big weakness of how slow time works in this comic. If it had been after a long time of the same behaviour, with no one ever seeing Ruth and her starting to miss classes, it would make sense to go nuts and get her committed. One day of sleeping in right after a day of legitimately putting in effort to appear on the floor is way too soon to start calling her bedridden status the same as suicidal depression, despite anything she might've said. Because at that point it could just be a low day.

Hell, from what I've heard even in people with depression that they're coping with professionally have down days and it's not always the end. We're just supposed to take it on dramatic rules that she has hit rock bottom, but if you look at it in context it's not that dire.

She had a break up, she was heavily relying on her partner, she made a genuine effort to try and connect with people on the floor after moping, and the next day she only got as far as moping. But in a week's time without Billie, maybe she would've gone back up to her level of functionality pre-relationship. We might've been seeing the separation fallout that would eventually lead to her being *more* healthy, remembering that her and Billie's relationship is not positive.

But, instead, we're expected to feel bad that the girls' relationship failed above all else. We're supposed to think it's the most unfair, negative outcome and that it could only lead to tragedy, when in fact the relationship seems more likely to lead to an alcohol poisoning death.

The relationship is explicitly a slow alcoholism death as stated by Billie and Ruth, it's a goddamn suicide pact running in slow motion. If anything, the reason why Ruth was hospitalized was due to Carla making a scene in public. Basically someone with barely any information about the situation make shit public and the cops were called by someone on the floor who has even less information. It's pretty interesting that we don't know who reported Ruth, we know it's not Ruth, Carla, Billie, Dorothy, Dina, Walky, Becky, or Joyce. Assuming that it's not a case of Willis writing authority figures randomly showing up when the plot requires it, of course.

Rachel contacted the Residence manager, and no cops have been involved.

>"Unnecessary, thank god. I've had to fix Ruth's door half a dozen times already this semester and maybe I should've investigate that."

Why does Willis like pointing out his own plot holes? Does he think it makes him seem witty or something?

If you acknowledge your flaws, they don't exist anymore! Everyone knows that!

and everybody's having gay sex 24/7

I just realized that Agatha (blonde girl), who is mormon, is wearing a really dowdy dress. Is this consistent? One of the few things Willis is good at is picking his characters' clothes (he probably looks at teen magazines or something) so this feels intentional.

Do mormons normally dress like 18th century farmers' daughters?

Only two people are having gay sex! The rest are having lesbian sex.

I don't know about consistent, but most Mormon women who are somewhat adherent tend to dress modestly in my experience.

>Loud
>Annoying and grating in long exposure
>Slowly grinds down whatever it interacts with until nothing is left
>Requires attention to not fuck everything up
>Despite the above still needs frequent maintenance
It checks out.

Agatha remains one of the few characters I don't yet dislike.

The only likable DoA characters at this point are ones that either remind you too much of some asshole you actually like IRL, or ones that just don't have more than a half dozen speaking likes

The less they talk, the less ruined they can be.
