I just finished reading the X-Men Legacy run by Spurrier. It's pretty good. It starts interesting, and I think it ends pretty well. The art wasn't good for most of it, but towards the end, I think it really worked. It's a character study of a mentally-ill superhero, with a whole load of issues. It's worth checking out.

I'm just going to share some thoughts here since I don't have anyone in my life to meaningfully or intelligently discuss comics with.


* Spurrier's writing really didn't work with the art for the majority of the series, and I think only by the last few issues did both the art and writing adapt appropriately to one another.

* I also think the art really pulled down the potential impact Spurrier's writing could've had. He was being clever, introspective, well-paced, emotional, and that was best expressed by the poor figures, blocking, perspective, panelling of the artist.

* Some of Spurrier's lines were really good. Eg: "lives still matter whether they happened or not."

*some other spurrier lines really didn't work for me. He repeated things too often for my taste. Too much of "aye" or "wee" or "i rule me". plus he really liked repeating sentences that meant the same thing but with different words. kinda felt like a lot of words with little real content. but i guess that's just the poetic-ish approach Spurrier used. (too bad the art didn't help).

* Also that moment when Ruth repeated to David what she was hearing (the "I'm proud of you, son"). I had this thought: what if she's lying? That bit of jumbled up text that supposed to be the message, look like some other piece of text. If she indeed did lie about the message, I think I like it even more. Kinda like the end of the last of us. but whatever, this might just be my headcanon.

* the covers were truly, truly fantastic.

Also, I'm aware of the fact that this story told one of a mentally ill man, and it tried to tell us how we just learn to deal with it, that there's no cure. This is generally true, and good insight.

BUT, the very end of the story, David removes essentially himself from this existence. He commits spiritual and existential suicide. And I think that somewhat corrupts the "moral" of the story. They try to tell us the story of the mentally ill is one of self-acceptance and perseverance, but in the end David, for all intents and purposes, kills himself. Hurts the core, overall message, imo.

Overall, i did like this run. i didn't love it, but it was worth reading, I suppose.

Now I'm gonna go read the New Mutants storyline with David.


Anyway, i'm done. What did other people think of the run? Any likes? Dislikes? I'd love any decent discussion.

Also, final note:

I really liked the line - "The things that stay with you forever, are the things that come to an end." It's a nice line, works on a story and meta level. Of course, it isn't universally true, but it generally is. I quite like it.
