It's a sitcom with a loose continuity. Twitter posts say that Season 2 will start having two-part episodes, but so far it's just an episodic comedy, which means that story is generally confined to whatever the topic of the day is. The action is pretty gimped, though there are some episodes where they manage to get a budget, and then it doesn't look like complete trash.

The wit of the show is dependent on the writer. Most episodes are pretty generic kids-stuff, some episodes are down-right bizarre, but there are rare episodes where you get something genuinely great. If it's written by Hahn and Denton, more than likely it's going to be a (relatively) fantastic episode.

I wouldn't call it tragic for that reason. What's a real tragedy is that people are able to use animation as a free paycheck, which means they don't have to push the boundaries of their talents to get to someplace better. Writers and animators would try to get away with as much shit as possible under the censors' radar back in the 90s and early zed's before soccer moms protested, which is why we have such a high standard for what we want in the content of animation today, which is why we're so sour at shows like TTG and so optimistic for shows like SvtFoE.

Sonic Boom is just one of those shows that's gently pushing the boundaries when it comes to writing, and while I don't expect them to go much further with it, there's a distinct improvement in their CGI animation, so I'm hoping the next time a game is released it won't look like absolute garbage.

Unfortunately the models they use in shows like these can't be used in games very easily. Shows pre-render all their shit, because they can do that days ahead of time. Meaning they can be as hi-poly as they want with zero drawbacks. Games have to render on the fly.
