Except Farquad is an asshole inside and out. The message is to accept your own qualities and it fall into a cycle of meanness and hate. Farquad attempted to overcompensate, literally, and had people nearly murdered at his own whim.

Its not a story about how ugly people can be accepted, but that you shouldn't count yourself out of the game just because you're ugly. Shrek didn't care that people hated him, he thought that he didn't deserve a happy ending and never considered that the princess might like him for who he is. Same message in Shrek 2

You guys missed the message. Farquad wasn't made fun of for being short. He was made fun of for desperately trying to compensate for his height by wanting a trophy wife. In a way he was similar to Shrek, Fiona, and Dragon, in that instead of accepting his flaws, he put on a fake image to hide the fact that he was ashamed of his appearance. The difference is the other characters learned to accept who they were by the end, while Farquaad continued being a stubborn asshole.
