i see the kiss as her trying to force herself mentally that their relationship is fine but, mid kiss, it hits how they've changed, with herself having a steady hectic job at a young age while mike lives a carefree school life. As for why it ended with hugs and smiles, we've been shown that the two are very good at hiding their emotions when needed (mike in december when he went from angry with lucy to happy with his mom back to angry with lucy and sandy with her ability to put on a smile when she tried to get an audition in an older chapter).

again a lot of this is assumptions, they two really just need to start talking shit out. mike seems like the one that would do it first.
