Do girls read comics?
>>
>>90114995
Some do. Lot of hot cosplayers do.
>>
The three comic shops I live near all have women running the counter, so I'd say yes.
>>
>>90115050
are they hot? do they smell like stale paper?

Is OP a faggot?

My cousin (female) reads comics from time to time
>>

Does /co/ read comics?
>>
I think the better question here is do attractive girls read real comics and no poorly pandered shit.
>>
>>90115057
>are they hot?

They read comic books for a hobby, of course they're not hot.

One of my friend's has an obsession with Tom King's stuff and she finds him cute.
>>
>>90114995
I know one girl irl that reads comics, and by that I mean she pirates Harley Quinn comics.

We don't get along.
>>
There's at least one female comic reader on this forum who does semi-regular storytimes.

>>90116447
this is true
on an anonymous website, telling people what gender you are is an attention grab, unless it is in a thread whose specific topic is gender like this one
as far as girls reading comics...
i live in the southern US and most women here are afraid to like anything out loud except bad music
i'm sure there are women who legitimately read comics (not just reading watchmen or the walking dead once) but i've never met one
>>

>>
>>90114995
Yes because I am one and I do.

I don't really like capeshit so I don't know if I 'count' though.
>>
>>90116923
What comics do you read? For the record, I ask everyone who says they like comics but not capes.
>>
>>90114995
Most girls I know read manga, does that count?
>>
>>90114995
I'd say more girls enjoy "orbiter hobbies" like cosplay because girls naturally like to play dress-up.

Not too many seem to enjoy action oriented media in general regardless if the protagonist is also female.
They often at best like the look of a character and the admiration they can get by dressing up like some kind of weird stripper.

What they do seem to enjoy that I have seen every so often is a story about a bland brunette that a female audience can self-insert as in a kind of love triangle or straight up reverse-harem.
>Fushigi Yuugi
>Ouran Highschool Host Club
>Vampire Knight
>Twilight
>Hunger Games
Not comics though.
I'd say most comic writers now-n-days find heterosexual relationships "unprogressive and problematic".
>>
>>90114995
Plenty. Just usually not cape comics.
>>
Yes, but I feel bad for them because now women that have been a part of the fandom for decades have to be repreented by a bunch of dye haired hipsters dead set on franchise rape for a nebulous greater good.

A lot of the girls reading comics didn't give a shit and now they have to go into hiding lest they be associated with condescending, juvenile, cutesy shit like Hellcat, and I can only guess how much that must suck for them.
I went through the same thing when Hudlin was on Black Panther but at least that was more isolated.
>>
>>90116632

This.

Girls actually read a wider variety of comics than boys.

Or, at least, a wider variety than the narrow niche that /co/'s boys focus on.
>>
>>90117604
It's not a reprint, it's new story. And she's asking for Saga.

Well, "new". 2014.
>>
>>90116521
Heh. It really did sound like 4chan. At first. Then the 2nd half of the page kinda escalated unrealistically. Seems more like these characters just have deep-seated anger issues but I doubt this writer actually thinks that deeply about what they write.

Yeah. I remember a woman back around 2007 asking me if I had read the latest green lantern. I lied of course because talking to women was rare for me and she smelled gud. She asked me who my favorite character was and I said Al Gordon. The conversation awkwardly fizzled out and I haven't talked to a woman since.

I guess some of the ones that do just don't go around being "visible". don't expect them to be qts or very sociable though. I dont think it's likely to mention it on threads unless it's a question like this one

No. It's a little known fact that women cartoonists have never actually read a comic book... we just draw what our male bosses describe to us. But actually reading comics? 100% forbidden.

I think girls are just way better at hiding their powerlevel, because guys just expect them not to be interested anyway.

I've been to plenty of comic/anime/whatever cons before, and not counting the "hot" girls who are really only being paid to strut costumes around, I find that female fans out just walking the floors generally tend to be pretty decent to nice looking. And they even seem to outnumber the not-so-good looking ones and landwhales by a fair amount.

Marketing and being in the right place at the right time. There were no other American space opera comics at that time then so it felt like something different to young girls raised on manga who wanted something that wasn't superheroes. And it was by BKV who was already one of the biggest writers in comics and it had been a couple years since he wrote anything, so there was a ton of anticipation. And was published by Image who were just starting to get cool again. Basically it was the perfect storm.

Five years later there are a million better space opera comics and it has jumped the shark hard but the intial buzz it had when it launched has solidified it as one of the most high profile comics.
>>
>>90120588
even if so, there are many reasons why somebody would like to take a pic with somebody. I would rather to be approached to by people who like my work, I think I relate to that idea better because I would like a picture with any of my favorite artists/get to see how they sketch/ink. I don't think I would take a photo with a cosplayer or a random dude just because he is a dude. But that it's just me
>>
>>90114995
No, not a single one. Pics like OP's are staged, ones that "seem" to know the plot read summaries on wikis, and the ones who work on actual comics are failed art school rejects never touching a comic outside their own and are only in for the sweet dosh.

Anytime you think a girl reads comics, it's a facade, a falsehood, an outright lie. It's a poor attempt by failed temptress to steal your wizardhood so watch out lads.

I know at least some female comic creators at least are kinda tired of Raina Telgemeier books sucking up so much of the oxygen when it comes to female and young readers. And they wish that critics would stop being so soft on her. I have no opinion on the books themselves because I haven't read them, but I find it interesting that a lot of female comic creators and readers yearn for a more complex and nuanced approach to how their work and reading habits are talked about.

My female cousin is a big capefag. Calls me a hipster for refusing to read DC and Marvel. Has a Tumblr but don't think she's a SJW, kept complaining to me about that new Wasp comic when I saw her a few days ago, and hated that Mockingbird comic.

Also a weeb though. Fat, "homely" the type girl that would be into that type of shit and NOT cosplay. She keeps complaining about being single and asking if I have single friends who like comics.

Women who read comics exist, but if you are expecting hot alternative girls to be genuine, you'll be disappointed.

I love comics, but I mainly read webcomics and manga. My favorites are Blacksad, Bone, Freaks' Squeele--even though I thought the ending left something to be desired--, Les Nombrils, and TMNT. I don't really care about DC comics outside of what they're doing with Hanna-Barbera and the upcoming Looney Tunes crossovers, while my love for Marvel books only extends to the Punisher and Howard the Duck.

I do cosplay but only from things I'm really into, like MST3K.

I mostly read art or small press comics, e.g. Fantagraphics, D&Q, 2dcloud, etc. Favorite artists are Clowes, Hanselmann, Van Sciver (though I followed the work of the latter two prior to their books with Fanta.) I've never met a man (and equally as few women) who can talk comics with me unless I'm at a specific event like SPX or CXC. See, the thing is that is what Marvel thinks, but that's not true in the slightest. These people are very vocal about comics, among other things, on their tumblrs and twitters, but most of them probably haven't touched a comic book in a very long time, if ever. That is nothing more than more of the same "the entire wold must be my safe space" SJW routine. If this election cycle taught us anything its that the kid that sat in he back of stats class and said "you know, isn't this bullshit and very vulnerable to confirmation bias?" was right.

You contact 1000 people from demographic information from a list you got from "facebook users that like the Harley Quinn page". 700 reply, and 300 are women very vocal about their comic support, 100 are women that don't, 200 are men that read comics and 100 are men that don't. We've just "proven" more women read comics than men.

People yelling "fake news" ironically doesn't cover up the fact that most of these polling places are no longer, in any way, aware of their own confirmation biases and as such take lists of people to contact from sources that make no sense.

Nobody is acting like that comic in a LCS. And if they are women should act like adults and tell these faggots to stop being faggots. But again, that comic above reeks of "I'm a woman and I can't go ANYWHERE without men obsessing and harassing me" when really the men around her are just going about their business.

Agree that the facebook method does not mea actual readers.

What PEW does have is indirect:

http://www.pewinternet.org/2015/08/19/the-demographics-of-social-media-users/
> Facebook — 72% of adult internet users/62% of entire adult population
> Usage continues to be especially popular among online women, 77% of whom are users. In addition, 82% of online adults ages 18 to 29 use Facebook, along with 79% of those ages 30 to 49, 64% of those ages 50 to 64 and 48% of those 65 and older.

http://www.pewinternet.org/2014/01/16/a-snapshot-of-reading-in-america-in-2013/
> 82% of women read at least one book in 2014 against 69% of men

Interesting that girls read comics less than other forms
>>
>>90128906
So between that faggot brett posting the same findings on multiple sites and this bullshit stuff by Pew we've basically found out women like comic-related social media pages.

Added with the oh so obvious evidence that "there are SO MANY women at comic conventions" we've arrived at the bullshit conclusion that women read like comics too.

It's so unscientific (at this point I'm assuming the data set on statista is based on asking 700 women of 1000 respondants if they "read a comic) you can't even debate it. People say "this is how market research is done" without factoring in they do much of the demographic shit without facebooks help. Corporations spend billions on actual, actionable market research.

Marvel pretty much admitted that last year didn't work by saying they would tone it back. I think their marketing teams finally realized facebook likes and mary sue articles don't translate to sales.

Millions of people like baseball teams on FB. Most can't sell out two consecutive games.
>>
>>90129314
I need to see their method of data collection. Trusting anyone to tell you the truth is unscientific.

Do I need to sign up as well to do so?

I really don't feel like it just to cynically look at one study.
>>
>>90129352
Please don't confuse direct market sales with actual sales.

Marvel is toning their current approach down because it isn't working as well as they wanted, but they aren't abandoning it entirely because it does work. They do get sales from outside their normal demographics through Amazon and Amazon subsidiaries. Just not "enough" to replace direct market sales.
>>
>>90126851

It's basically a requirement. It's like hiring an illiterate person at a bookstore. A lot of comic book stores and relevant places hire people who are able to make suggestions to customers that will help encourage sales.
>>
>>90114995

>>
>>90129352
>assuming the data set on statista is based on asking 700 women of 1000
>>90129391

Why assume when you can read the linked report:

> The data were collected from April to June 2016. Invitations to take part in the survey were sent
> to all schools within the Greater Manchester area (N = 169). 5,256 children and young people
aged 8-18 from 60 schools participated in this survey.
> There was near equal gender split in our sample (girls 49.9%, boys 50.1%). The sample
contained mostly pupils aged 8-11 (83.4%), followed by pupils aged 11-14 (14.6%), pupils aged
> 14-16 (1.8%) and pupils aged 16+ (0.2%). 30.4% of children and young people said that they
> received free school meals, a percentage that is above the national average.

Signing up with statista just gives Supplementary notes, but the literacytrust source data itself is free and pretty extensive.
>>
>>90130205
My assumption was more generous to their findings...

Their methods are based on school kids telling the truth. I used to fill out SALT surveys saying I used methamphetamines 3 times a week.

>>90129458
any disagreement with my post is purely semantic. We both said marvel's push failed and they toned it back. You simply decided to specify their process of toning back and said it in a less negative way.
>>
>>90129391
>>90130205
to clarify the linked report is for Manchester only, sample size 5256

The United Kingdom report surveyed over 30,000 pupils from 155 schools in 2014:
http://www.literacytrust.org.uk/research/nlt_research/7163_childrens_and_young_peoples_reading_in_2015
and subsets have significant samples sizes, far better than a mere 1000:

Look at pic related - comic reading declines with age but ratio remain around 60% boys 40% girls. 7,097 in Key Stage 2 (age 8 to 11), 4,163 in KS 4 (age 14 to 16)
>>
>>90130796
I'm saying that whether or not their push is a "failure" depends on whose standards we're working with.

I don't know if it was girls buying their girl-aimed comics, but somebody did buy them and Marvel did make a profit on them. Marvel is switching strategies now because their current tactic makes them a profit, but they think their next tactic _might_ make them a BIGGER profit.

That's their business model, canceling something profitable in the hopes that the replacement will be more profitable.
>>
>>90115050
Yeah, and chicks work at gamestop. Doesn't mean they play videogames, dude. Wise up. Bitches just there for moneyand to flirt to get dumb customers to spend more.

>>90131150
We're working with their standards. It was a failure. A company doesn't publically say they're stepping away from a specific publishing angle if it was a "success" by their standards. Especially if it got them nothing but good press.

Their wording would have been "while it might not have been as huge as we hoped but we're committed to this initiative." Not "Yeah, that didn't work so we're toning it back".

>>
>>90131281
And you trying to make it seem like I'm the ridiculous party is not representative of reality.

You mean to tell me I should just accept these numbers as conclusive because they're from a study?

And where's your proof for that? That's my point. Prove to me that those answers aren't bullshit. You can't. Just like I can't prove they all are. But the difference is I don't have to. I don't need to prove every answer is BS in order for the numbers to be unreliable. You need to prove to me that they're mostly not bullshit in order for them to be taken as actionable "fact".

If you can't then your study isn't reliable. And you can't possibly prove that the way the study was conducted. We don't even know what their definition of "comic" was. 1 page? A few Panels? 22 pages? A TPB? Who knows.
>>
>>90114995
They're mostly about muscular guys in tight spandex, I'm honestly surprised the vast majority of the demographic for comics isn't female.
>>
>>90131592
>I don't need to prove every answer is BS in order for the numbers to be unreliable.
How much of the survey needs to be BS in order for the entire survey to be worthless? If it's only 5% BS, would you ignore the other 95% of non-BS content? That 5% figure has no basis in anything, I'm just throwing it out there, but I'm curious what you think is the average amount of BS in the average survey, and how much that should influence your perception of the non-BS results.

The survey doesn't act as proof one way or the other, but in lieu of anything else, it is evidence that girls do read comics in numbers that are close to (though still less than) boys.

Yes they do

This is a stupid question and stupid thread that was probably made as b8
>>
How do I find a cute girl who reads comics to be friends with?
>>

The point is that with a study conducted as such you can't prove ANY of it was true. You literally can't even put a percentage. The uncertainty is the invalidation, not the degree of uncertainty.

If I can't trust the info of even one respondent because the study allowed room for lies, the whole thing holds about as much water as my annecdote about lying.

Stats are supposed to bring you closer to a truth or understanding, not to a point of "well, assuming they all were trustworthy, it proves my point."

The real number could be more in favor of girls if there are boys saying they read comics who don't. So many people just on /co/ would say they read comics but how many even jump into a free story time?

Your taking my skepticism as simply saying "girls don't read comic" just because its convenient for you to think of me as just a 4chan shit head. In reality the study could have shown that girls read comics at twice the rate of boys, but since all the boys lied and said they did when they didn't it makes it look like it's even.

>"it proves my point."
I just said that it's not proof, only evidence. Argue against what I'm actually saying, not what you imagine me to be saying.

So if you're not trying to argue that girls don't read comics, what are you trying to argue? What is the point of your participation in this discussion?

Wanna know an easy way to know a female poster from a male one?
Check how many times they use "anon" when they could've used he/she/you/they etc. If they use anon instead of just using pronouns more often than not that poster will be a female or come from tumblr/reddit

I first realized this in /cgl/, they use "anon" so much there that it's fucking annoying. And they're mostly females/traps in there. Go to /v/, /his/, or any other male-dominated board for example, you'll realize that "anon" isn't used nearly as much as is used in /cgl/ or here.

I don't know why this happens. I guess most females here feel weird when being called by male pronouns so they decide to use anon instead, but I'm sure that's garanteed to be wrong.

Evidence is, by definition, proof. Don't act like you're the smarter party here.

If you're that much of a fucking faggot that you'll try to (incorrectly) debate semantics then you are the one with no argument.

My point is and has been that the study isn't evidence (or proof, again the same thing) of anything because it was poorly conducted.

You've attempted to tell me that just because a study is somewhat bullshit we should believe some unknown percentage of it.

Or course, there's a few that aren't. But if you doubt that it's true just compare the use of "anon" between /co/ and /cgl/ with the other boards previously said.

It's all speculation at the end of the day though, so of couse I might be wrong.

Now you're askin the real questions
>>
>>90132824
Get real. There's bad evidence, anecdotal evidence, circumstantial evidence, falsified evidence, simultaneous evidence for and against theories. Proof relies on sufficient gathering and verification of evidence, but evidence alone isn't good enough to be proof.

You've attempted to tell me that we should believe absolutely none of anything. So would you say that there is no evidence that girls read comics? If we can't rely on evidence, I guess we can only rely on your gut feelings. Oh well.
>>
>>90116632

>>
>>90133253
bad evidence isn't evidence. falsified evidence isn't evidence. circumstantial evidence isn't evidence. anecdotal evidence isn't evidence. Proof is evidence. Evidence is proof.

You are not using the word evidence correctly.

Also, I said that this poorly conducted study cannot be trusted. Not "absolutely none of anything".

You're impossible to argue with because your only argument is "girls read comics" and my only argument is "girls read comics, but the number represented in this study could only be accurate by way of luck."
>>
>>90133503
>circumstantial evidence isn't evidence. anecdotal evidence isn't evidence.
It's right there in the name.

Let me quote another source which I'm sure you consider unreliable: Wikipedia.

>A proof is sufficient evidence or a sufficient argument for the truth of a proposition.
So if evidence is insufficient then it's not proof, but it's still evidence.

>Exactly what evidence is sufficient to prove something is also strongly area-dependent, usually with no absolute threshold of sufficiency at which evidence becomes proof.
Evidence is not by default proof, but something which can _become_ proof.

So we both believe that girls read comics. But what do you base your belief on? Where is your evidence?

>Circumstantial evidence is evidence that relies on an inference to connect it to a conclusion of fact—like a fingerprint at the scene of a crime.
>Anecdotal evidence is evidence from anecdotes, i.e., evidence collected in a casual or informal manner and relying heavily or entirely on personal testimony.
I must be mistaken then.

It says "is evidence" but that must have been an accident, any they must have really meant to write "is not evidence".

Yeah but not western capeshit. Girls like manga.

Part of the reason so many girls in my high school were weeaboos was because they finally had an entire genre (shojo) marketed to them, America still has a "comics are for boys" stigma.
