Sigh. Why is Marvel so afraid to make anything other than a comedy?

I too don't understand why they wouldn't abandon their formula of family fun, which earns them critical favor, audience love and untold billions,
When they could earn the respect of the half dozen internet autists (and that includes OP) who want something "different".

But they have a built in audience now and unconditional love from critics, they could at least try to do something a bit more unique…especially given what should be a very dark storyline

The reason why Thor 1 and 2 sucked was they were TV Budget fantasy films. Instead of going with wild and big ideas, they kept everything safe and generic. They turned Gods into aliens, with space ships and AA Guns. The realm they named the second film after was just a desolate wasteland. Earth was the primary location of both films.

Being serious was not the problem at all.

Apparently Odin and Malekith had spent some time killing each other's friends and families.
I don't think he would personally show up in Asgard and kill on Thor's family if he was capable of being scared by Thor and his hammer. It didn't work on Zod either, as I recall.
>>
>>90111007
Because Hemsworth is really wooden as ordinary boring Thor, but surprisingly good at comedic delivery.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFLKIxvudq4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3TOw6r7ghc
These two videos are the best use of MCU Thor by far.
>>
>>90111523
It's just a wordy version of Thor's confrontation with Tony in the Avengers, where he would have probably killed Tony if Cap hadn't intervened.

It also builds on a fuckton of Stark dickery leading up to this moment.
>>
>>90111417
What do people keep saying this? The humour in those movies is a terrible fit for Thor. The post-credits scene in Doctor Strange was embarrassingly bad.
>>
>>90111523
Bah, he's a hypocritical shit.

If you read comics, that motherfucker straight up conquered the world and allowed the torture and murder of Tony. And that was just an arc or two before he dissapeared in Ragnarok.Oh, and just before he did, Tony and Cap fought with him proving their eternal friendship and he toasted them for being loyal allies.

Civil War made Tony the bad guy, when he was once great friends with Thor.

Pepperidge Farm remembers.
>>
>>90111628
Er, actually, Reed and Pym made the Thor clone.
Tony didnt.

But Tony has to pay the piper right?
>>
>>90111635
It doesn't work for comic neckbeards: I'm sure Disney has realised that by now.
It does give the Thor movies higher audience scores than anything in the entire DCEU, and respectable returns at the box office.

They are adding Hulk because he and Thor played off of each other to great effect. (and with Loki).

When they make movies explicitly for the comic neckbeards, like Watchmen and Dredd, they lose money.
>>
>>90111628
It came before the movie and unlike the movie there was none of that "iron man can legitimately push Thor around and benefit from his lightning " BS

Who is asking for the movies to be made for neckbeards? I've never read a Marvel or DC comic in my life. I don't care about portraying Thor as he was in the comics, I don't even know what that is, I just know that what (admittedly little) we've seen of Thor from Taika Waititi so far represents a complete misunderstanding of his character so far in the MCU. Eh, I'd rather watch the Thor movies for the comedy than the story
And marvel movies in general too. They're action comedies
Let's face it. These movies are such a product of an assembly line by Disney, or a complete disaster with not a single care about the final product from Warner Bros that we won't have a great cape movie ever again like TDK.
But at least Marvel movies are entertaining enough to be an excuse to go on a date or hang out with friends and not a tiresome incoherent mess.

Tony and Cap never really liked each other that much and Cap hardly hated Tony at the end, other than that, the teams ended better off, Tony and Hawkeye came back from retirement, BP, ant man and spider man joined the teams and even if half the team are refugitives, they are friends with the king of wakanda, the most advanced city on earth, which also has unlimited ressources on vibranium, which makes it even more pointless that cap left his shield behind. Zemo may've divided them but made them stronger in the process.

>What have you done lately, Tony?

Saved the world from an Extremis mass saturation that would have wiped out 95% of the population, for starters, and handling one dangerous crisis after another with minimal casualties, both bad and good, not to mention running S.H.I.E.L.D. more effectively than anyone else did up until that time.

Why does everyone always act like Tony did nothing but act like a cunt during/after Civil War? He wasn't Jesus or anything, and had his own fair share of shady dealings, but a lot of the thing people blame Tony for are actually things his allies did, like Maria Hill going against Stark's directives just about every chance she got, or shit like >>90111695.

Infinity War starts with them still not quite on speaking terms, if the Russos are to be believed. Just because Cap offered an olive branch doesn't mean Starks QUITE ready to take it, yet.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if we find out come the film that he's been somewhat helping cover Steve and co.'s tracks from Ross.

Thor 1 was directed by a fucking Shakespearfag. All the Asgardian pomp & bluster was presented as seriously as magic space vikings could be. Not to mention the MC going all Jesus in the 3rd Act.
Maybe you shouldn't bother with Thor at all, in any medium. It's walked the fine line between serious & silly since its inception.

Pym Skrull, Hank was kidnapped by Skrulls at the time.

But Tony was in charge of the whole operation, there is no fucking way he couldn't have known. Also he OK'd the whole Negative Zone prison and sent a lot of heroes there in ungodly conditions, while he also recruited villains to hunt heroes down.

Then there's that whole shitshow with Osborn and the Antlantean ambassador...

>>90113080
Rich had a fucking good reason to be mad at Tony (and not just Tony but with the rest of the earth heroes except Tony is the one who called him for a meeting so he got the talk) because ignored an important distress signal about the Annihilation Wave (which had wiped countless of planets and civilizations) heading towards Earth aand if the Cosmic heroes hadn't stopped it... Well just see What If Annihilation had reached Earth.

Also all that Tony cared about was registering Rich and he didn't even listen to anything he said which was important, nah Tony deserves the shit he got.

Because superhero movies are shit. They can't tell a good story and they can't deliver any serious, profound or interesting moments. All they have is explosions and quips.

Endless quips. Smarmy, stupid, pointless quips in every single scene, specially designed to take any and all seriousness out of what might inadvertently have been a tense or serious situation.

No no, can't have that. God forbid anything is ever played straight, you got to have your sitcom-esque low-quality quipping, lest the audience thinks the movie is actually trying to take superheroes seriously and become uncomfortable.

Without the quips, there would be nervous laughing and worried glances in the movie theatre from people who suddenly find themselves confused and scared by a film that isn't pandering to their low intellect. "Where are the jokes?" one would mumble under his breath.
"This isn't fun, I haven't laughed in ten minutes", another would say, slightly louder.
"I came here to hear Robert Downey Jr. say that funny bit about Thor that he did in the trailer, not to see some stupid story about shit I don't care about" a third would yell as he storms out the exit.

No, thank god for Joss Whedon and thank god for his contribution to the cape movie genre. Without him and his ilk, how would we know that we're only supposed to enjoy these films IRONICALLY.

There were barely any jokes in the whole movie. What jokes were there even past the beyonce thing, Mad's thinking his name was Mr. Doctor and the cape joke? How autistic do you have to be to get mad about that?

>Tony and Cap never really liked each other

I don't know, if anything Steve was pretty neutral to Tony while Tony kind of wanted Steve and him to bond but they just clashed so much and they never were in the same page.

I never got the vibe that the were buddies like people claim, but they had a connection and a bond. It's like having a family member or a relative who you hang out with during a family reunion but you couldn't be more different and they occasionally pissed you, and you rather go and hang out with your friends, that's how I think Steve saw Tony.

Tony however he kind wanted to connect with Steve from the beginning, but you know he's very Tony Stark about it and initially Steve doesn't respond well to his asshole behavior until Tony did the sacrifice play and Steve found out he was a good man despite being a human disaster of a man.

Heck you can tell in Civil War Tony desperately wants Steve's friendship and to have Steve on his side and for Steve to back him up, but Steve ultimately does what he thinks is right and rejects everything that Stark is offering. In a way I think Civil War was more personal and a bigger betrayal for Tony than it was for Steve.

Then there's the Howard connection, Tony had daddy issues when it came to Howard and Howard respected the shit out of Steve Rogers, couple that with Agent Carter showing us that Howard has guilt and pain over Steve's suppose death and because he never fond his body plus RDJ saying that Tony saw Steve like "a brother who was his dad's favorite" Stark has a lot of bagagge when it comes to Steve. Also Steve keeping the Winter Soldier thing from him and protecting Bucky it must have been a big blow for Tony.

More serious movies can do great business. DoFP and The Winter Soldier both made huge profits even though they were definitely on the more serious and emotional side of comic movies. Quiet, intense, sad moments can also help to highlight quips through contrasts. But jokes can become annoying if they're nonstop like they were in Age of Ultron.
