I think the serious & childish aspects didn't blend well. Most of the music was almost operatic like Stephen Sondheim (well it was composed by Stephen Schwartz), so some of the more playful songs were not fitting with the rest of the soundtrack. Esmeralda was also a mess. I did not get what she wanted out of life. She had an attitude about staying in the Cathedral when leaving it would risk her life. Did she really have to get out of there within hours of claiming sanctuary?
