I'm pretty sure none of his other movies made as much money as this one.
Also for the argument of RDJr, his movie the judge bombed despite him being in it.

The magic in this movie was so boring. All they could do was fold shit and make glowing energy bullshit with their hands, the portal ring, astral shit, and the time travel amulet. That's it. Also the whole "Mirror Dimension" thing, which is just a cop out so they can have big magic battles in a city but no one gets hurt because these movies have no balls.

I love Hellblazer, was disappointed with the rape of the source material of Constantine, and enjoyed DrS.

That being said, Constantine has aged really well. In retrospect, it's a far better supernatural wizard hero movie.

I was honestly hoping for Constantine sort of magic, rather than mostly LCD Jedi.

>It also didn't help that Kaicellius was the blandest possible villain.

This is a problem with all the Marvel villains lately. Marvel has decided that the best way to make a villain is to give them an ideological motivation that opposes them to the hero, so they're just trying to do what's right in their mind. This is supposed to make them more relatable, but it just saps all the joy out of their villainy. You got Zemo, the Night Elves, Ronan, Robert Redfordman, Kaicellius. The only one with a personal reason to hate the heroes (Zemo) is a walking cipher with no emotional affect for all of the movie. The last good villains they did were Ultron and Killian who had a some personality at least. Ultron has this weird familial hatred of Stark, and Killian wants to kill Tony/Become him out of jealousy/vengeance, that's way better.

Strange felt like a kung fu movie
This would have been perfect for Iron fist

It failed to deliver what mysticism it has in the comics that was more medieval base
>>
>>90085049
Pretty sure that Deadpool, Strange and Pets did more on USA than BvS.
>>
>>90085134
It was their desperate move to appeal to china
Instead of coming up with something decent
>>
>>90085134

Honestly.. I think the legacy of Harry Potter and the MCUs' current universe sort of forced DrS into a corner on how magic would work.

It's hard to mix medieval magic with sci-fi.

Should have went with a more SAGA vibe. I could see its companion being Guardians. More mystical beings and magic creatures.
>>
>>90085152

Let's see, domestic party:

>Doctor Strange $232,417,391
>BvS $330,360,194
>Man of Steel $291,045,518
>>
>>90085152
Deadpool made something like 15 mill less than ss, but it's budget and advertising were shoestring, so it was infinitely more popular.

>>90085313

No, I'm saying they didn't want to be like Harry Potter so had to go in another direction.

> We can't have him saying latin and casting spelly-arm-moose and stuff! We need something flashy!

Etc etc. Obviously moving away from traditional magic and trying to bring in eastern aesthetics and spiritualist imagery. Rather that the candles, chalk, and full moon sort of stuff.

You missed the point entirely.
>>
>>90084563
>In Civil War they paid him like 8 times more than Evans
Because of the contract he signed for Iron Man 1 meant that he gets a percentage of the movie's profits that he appears in. It lasts until his contract ends.

Evans and the others being paid less is because Marvel actually thought about their contracts this time around instead of being haphazard.
>>

You mean it was moderately more profitable, not "infinitely more popular." If it made less money, then it sold fewer tickets, and so it was actually less popular, not more, even if it cost less to make and so made the studio happier.

kek DC fans on suicide watch
Despite the mininmal budget and advertising, Suicide squad barely did better than Deadpool with the foreign market factored in. As far as upwards numbers go anyway, as far as profits, Deadpool was leaps and bounds more profitable than that trainwreck.

So for all it's marketing, bells and whistles, edgy marketing, and loud in your face adverts, Deadpool only barely had a lower upper number than SS.

I can guarantee you when their sequels come Deadpool will btfo out of it in every way, that's even if SS2 even makes it out the door.

Stay mad DCuck
>>
>>90085593

Yes.. I know. It did magic well, I'm not saying it's the direction that they could or should have taken with DrS.

I at least buy that the magic in DrS "fits" into the MCU in some way.

But sadly that means making Dormammu look like a talking accordion, and not a badass Heavy Metal mofo.

I honestly thought Dr. Strange is the best introductory movie in the MCU.

It wasn't perfect, but it had strong acting and great visuals. The only real flaw for me was the pacing had issues. They really should have made it go over the course of a few years. I wasn't the hugest fan of the McAdam's character, but I understood the reason why they had it and I thought their dynamic was fine and at the very least provided a great start to the movie. I loved the way he beat Dormammu.

All the bitching about his magics not being powerful enough or whatever is dumb, he isn't even the sorcerer supreme yet, he's still training at the end of the movie. Derrickson himself straight up said that.

Its a strong start and shows a lot of potential as a series.

Dr. Strange and SS had nearly identical marketing budgets. I know you are getting your figures from Box Office Mojo, in which case you should know that your 'extensive reshoots' comment is just you pulling bullshit out of your ass.

Dr. Strange also was released in international markets that Suicide Squad was not ALLOWED to be screened in, per censorship by those territories/countries. THEREFORE, DS should HAVE made more AND did not.
>>
>>90096739
>The only real flaw for me was the pacing had issues

It's essentially IM with better visuals. A single self-involved egocentric man who thinks he's better than everyone else overcomes a health and physical handicap to come out victorious. There are more examples I could make but you just need to do a browser search with "DS IM comparisons."

Captain America - TFA is the best intro movie. Thor had great visuals but suffered from a limited budget, which is why they were stuck filming all those scenes in New Mexico, versus the fact that DS could film world wide due to an increased CGI budget plus how costs in that area have decreased in just 5 years. Antman had to introduce too many things AND try to be more of a comedy. Hulk had two intros and those were just failures on so many levels it's too funny/sad to get into.
>>
>>90097907

I mean if you look market by market, SS really blow the fuck out Dr Strange. It pulled almost 100M more just in the US

Here is two plot points that made my autism flare up:
>1. Strange reading wizard-books written in sanskrit through google translate.
Books on mystical shit are usually chock full of metaphors and alternative meanings. Understanding what the fuck they're trying to say is hard even if they're in your native language and google struggles to translate a fucking restaurant menu.

>2. His girlfriend surgeon patching him up after he got stabbed hard enough to have cardiac tamponade.
The needle and a couple of stitches aren't enough. He'd need a full on surgery to fix the pericardial sac.

>The only real flaw for me was the pacing had issues. They really should have made it go over the course of a few years.

I thought this when I watched the movie too, but a friend pointed out that strange got gray hair sometime during his training, showing that it had been years. It's subtle though, and makes you think the person they want strange to fix in the beginning isn't rhodey, since the timing would be all fucked up between movies (unless lol timegem).
>>
so I just watched this tonight

it's an above average movie. anyone who says its a below average movie has been spoiled by sampling only the cream of the crop and doesn't realize how truly bad a movie can be or how many truly bad movies are made each year.

a huge chunk of why its above average is the visuals and how they impact the narrative, including stuff like the Dark Dimension resembling neurons in a brain. but it would be disingenuous to the dismiss the movie just because one aspect works in its favor above the others.

The OST was mediocre. For a movie that relies so much on LSD visuals, it didn't have the soundtrack to back it up. get Infected Mushroom or Brennan Heart or someone in there, and never have any scenes with no bgm, and you would nearly double the quality of the movie. Hell, get whoever it is that does the music for Yoko Taro's games. something surreal and with a high bpm.

There were a number of times where it tried to be funny when it shouldn't have, basically failing to read the mood. The best example that comes to mind is in the London Sanctorum, when Steven is struggling to crawl away when abruptly the Cloak of Levitation starts attacking the guy hunting him. It had the overall presentation of slapstick comedy which the scene just did not call for.

My other major complaint is the pacing. Specifically,
the movie as is falls more or less into three narrative quarters of roughly 20 minutes. The first quarter, with Steven as a Surgeon and his following accident, goes too long.
The last quarter, from The Ancient One having just died to the denouement once Dormammu has been bargained, wasn't long enough. it felt like Team Strange vs Team Cultists didn't hit the climax it needed before Steven flew off to bargain. There should have been a 1v1 between Strange and Kaecilius in there for at least 3-5 minutes where Strange is constantly on the ropes and things look truly desperate.

that's my review
>>
>>90097907
What goes on the stated budget doesn't necessarily cost them anything, they just put the assessed value down for tax and other purposes. Disney doesn't have to actually pay for that much outside of their holdings and doesn't do things like secure the rights for songs to make an AMV that adds nothing and looks like it was made by a tween with a YouTube account.
>>
>>90099399
I heard the scene was edited from the original, which really hammered in how long Strange and Dormammu were trapped in the loop and how many times Strange had to die to save the world.

I think the broader issue is that Strange was wearing the Eye for nearly half the movie, even after they jumped in and chastized him for messing with stuff he didn't understand he didn't actually take it off before showed him the doors to the other sanctorums. A possibly better way would have been for him to have put it back then, and at the end have him trying to outrun the encroaching Dark Dimension and Kaecilius to retrieve it so he can do the rewind spell

And I felt they really need to stop trying to add so much comedy in a movie that could still be good maybe even better if played a lil more serious.
