Sure, I read older Iron Man afterward and continued following both Rhodey and Tony in the Avengers/West Coast Avengers thing, but my first Iron Man was Rhodey. From the day I saw the first Iron Man film, I hoped the franchise would live long enough to get to War Machine because he's "my" Iron Man.

I fully understand that Terrence Howard was looking forward to Iron Man 2 as "I'll be the next Iron Man" and thinking he should get equal billing and pay, especially with the behind-the-scenes stuff heavily hinting that the studio was originally going to use Rhodey as the Iron Man in the Avengers movies (check Black Widow's report of "Iron Man: Recommended, Tony Stark: Not recommended").

But the simple fact of the matter is that Don Cheadle is a better actor than Terrence Howard, and the fact that they could get a better actor for less money made it a clear choice.

With that said, let's also remember that RDJ's pay is disproportionate to everyone else in the franchise because of the way his contract is negotiated. RDJ's pay is not standard "white actor" pay for Marvel. No one else in the whole MCU makes close to what he does. Saying that Howard wanting RDJ pay is just "wanting to be paid like a white man" is absurd.

Ultron's actual origin is as-yet unrevealed. They could very easily write a prequel where Hank Pym writes the program and then traps Ultron's mind in the Scepter. They projected a holographic representation of the AI while it was still in the Scepter and it sat there thinking but not reacting to anything Tony and Bruce did. Stark himself even says "We didn't do ANYTHING." when confronted by the other Avengers about his responsibility for it.

We've gone from having an enthusiastic Ben wanting to star in and direct a Batman film to him apparently wanting nothing to do with the project. There's clearly some shit going on inside the studio that we are only getting glimpses of. If executive egos are involved (especially given that there has clearly been a push from within WB to make the DCEU more like Marvel) and Affleck fought back against them it wouldn't doubt that they would want him gone. It's pretty obvious that they view the Bat-Brand as bullproof, that sort of thinking makes it very easy to ditch plans and actors.
