I expect we'll get that or at the very least a significant hint as to what really happened.

I also get the feeling that the characters who will get the most focus in Season 3 will of course be Lotor after all that hype, but also Lance as his perceived rivalry with Keith comes to a head when Keith tells everyone that Shiro wanted him to be team leader. I think Lance doubting himself in that one episode was just a prelude to the serious soul searching he's likely to undergo with Shiro disappearing and also placing Keith above him.

After that, maybe Pidge since I expect we'll be reuniting with Matt in Season 3. But Hunk could be the dark horse here, since neither he nor Lance really had significant development in Season 2. Hunk at least got to show some development during Balmerra arc in Season 1 though, so he might be on the back burner yet again.

Personally, I think it has to do with how they handle character development. It's just so slow and anemic most of the time. Most of the characters either end up getting ignored or getting really hollow development (e.g. Pidge's connection thing, Lance's existential crisis). It's almost miraculous how they manage to use their time so ineffectively.

Maybe they're scared of going down the path of melodrama, like Legend of Korra, so they ended up going too far in the other direction.

After finishing S2 I decided to look up the synopsis for the original Voltron, mainly to confirm who piloted what because the attached image wasn't giving any clear answers.

Up till then I barely knew anything about the original show so I didn't realize how identical the synopsis and cast were to the original show (i.e. Voltron main enemy being the Galra empire) nor about the original character to mech arrangement the show had.

So even though Shiro was giving off "death" flags throughout the two seasons, it actually didn't occur to me that the current show was setting up the characters to start piloting the mechs like the original show had until after I had finished the 2nd season. See, if there is a redemption arc for Lotor I hope that it's similar to Starscream's in Amarda. See, what was great about Starscream is that he wasn't an obviously good person when the series began. Instead, his joining the Autobots was due to revenge and pragmatism. Revenge on Megatron for the abuse that Starscream suffered throughout the series and pragmatism as he knew if he went back he was dead. It was only through his interactions with the other Autobots and their allies he saw the beauty in the universe. It was a lesson that stayed with him right until the end of the series (And when the rest of the trilogy fucked all that development away).

That is exactly what a hypothetical Lotor redemption arc needs to be. He first needs to be established as a villain, then give him issues with Galra and his father's command. A change in sides from a pragmatic standpoint, fueled by the anger and resentment to his father over the years. Eventually this change in sides then turns into a deep bond with the rest of the cast.

See, I think that Lotor needs to be the scimitar to his fathers broadsword. He has specific targets and goal, rather than just break his opponents. Essentially, his father will beat his opponent to death while Lotor will cause their opponent to die from blood loss.

The next best thing is that he'll be a typical fantasy 'prince protagonist', but on the wrong side of the war.

An episode where Quintessence or MacGuffin shenanigans cause Lotor to de-age into a kid, seemingly without his memories from his later years. He spends the ensuing minutes messing around with Team Voltron's stuff and being a bother in the most innocent and childlike way imaginable (You're too old to be Allura. And you're not as pretty./What does this do?/Oops/Lance did it!/Hey, evil witch lady! You smell bad!)

Then the same thing happens to Allura and she's shocked to find out that her memory hasn't been affected at all! Lotor's been playing them all for saps! She rushes back to where she left him, and catches him in the midst of sabotaging the castle.

They go into the usual hero/villain histrionics, very arch and Shakespearean, but it's rendered cute and surreal since it's two kids saying it all. They get into a struggle with the age altering plot device at the center which causes their ages to fluctuate (the Paladins get turned elderly with Pidge bemoaning how she's even shorter now).

When they're both in their autumn years, Lotor preens over how he always knew Allura would age gracefully. Allura responds by using her newfound case of the Slipperies to get the edge over him (some of it gets in his mouth and he gags over how it's not nearly as romantic or pleasant as he thought it'd be). She undoes the chrono madness, restoring everyone to their proper states. As the heroes congratulate her, Lotor escapes using one of the castle pods and pours over the info he pilfered during his stay. The Paladins tease Allura over how she and the Prince technically "grew old together."

Currently working with this setup for how it all fits together:

With so many episodes still coming up, I think it will be fine for one season, and they will probably go back once Shiro's back. Maybe Red throwing a tantrum will be an episode on its own.

I don't think Shiro will be back soon. With this many episodes total, I wouldn't be surprised if after his dramatic return he was chosen to lead Earth Voltron or something similar, so both he and Keith could be the leader of their own teams and be on equal terms for the rest of the series.
