The story was terrible because it was a spin-off comic-book written by inferior writers, and they had to make a whole dumb plot out of it to fill enough pages. Obviously if it happened in ATLA it wouldn't be anywhere near the same story, the only goal would be to resolve Zuko's mother's whereabouts. It could have been done in one or two episodes max.

Those boundaries might have seemed unfair but they worked well in the setting, what with the four bending types and four nations. Aang and Korra have essentially doomed the planet by making it even harder for subsequent Avatars to maintain balance
