Wreck-It Ralph was loosely based on the 1997 short story "Jumper", which followed the exploits of the titular Mario-esque character named Jumper going to other arcade games because he believed the other machines needed his help. As he travels from machine to machine, beating the bad guys in each, he ends up getting tracked down by the bad guy of HIS game (named King Vile), who explains that Jumper isn't hailed as a hero in the games he jumped to, but a rule-breaking tyrant, and that the characters Jumper defeated were killed permanently because they weren't beaten by characters from their own game. The story ends with Jumper getting defeated by King Vile, but with the hero of the game dead and NOT in his game, the arcade is full of essentially broken machines and is shut down by the owner.
