Marvel and Archie teaming up to put out digest comics sounds like a deal with no downsides.

Archie gets badly need cashflow.
Marvel gets grocery store and gas station impulse buys that have been gone for like a decade now.
Marvel writers might start doing new stories with tighter plotting that works better for digests.
Kids once again get legitimately accessible comics, giving a new generation more chances to get interested.

All around, a good deal.

And it probably can't even be the most current stuff getting reprinted, because can you imagine buying a digest with a Bendis part 3 of 6 in it? It'd be (even more) unreadable than usual.

>DC meets Looney Tunes
I fucking hate crossovers. Exactly because of bullshit like this. The DCU and Looney Tunes have nothing in common aside from being owned by Warner Bros. There is no interesting story to be mined from this, no thematic connection to work with, you can't even get any good jokes out of it. The only reason this is happening is because WB wants to squeeze money out of both, and despite the utter lack of potential, fuckin' nerds will make sure it flies off the self on day one.

I can't even remember the last time there was a crossover that had an actual point beyond pandering to the Death Battle crowd.
>>
>>90006696
I also saw a couple retailers saying that they never returned anything since they sold out of everything they ordered

I'm guessing returnability was mostly used by bigger shops like Midtown and whatnot that had more freedom to over-order stuff

Marvel Adventures was pretty ideal digest story telling, though, and Defalco's old school approach in Spider-Girl made each story individually readable.

And, what's more, those were digest trades. I imagine the Marvel Digests are going to work a lot more like Archie ones- cheap paper and cherry picking from 80 years worth of content.

>>
>>90007008
There's a few varieties of LP.
There's your walkthrough style, where the player goes over everything, like all the endings, collectables, ect.
Then there's your Blind LPs, where the player has no idea what he's getting into, which is especially popular for horror games (which is where Scarecam, where you can see their faces and their reactions, originated).
Then there's a third style, which I like to refer to as "entertainment LPs". This is the hardest to explain to someone who isn't interested, mostly because this one focuses more on how much the viewer likes the GAMER, as opposed to how much they like the GAME. Those ones can be especially cringy if you don't like the channel.

A good LP can be described as a discussion of sorts on the game in question. It's not just watching someone play a video game, it's watching someone showcase it. The point, which many people miss, is to show the game off and perhaps educate viewers on things they didn't know, possibly even getting them to consider buying it.

For a good example of this, check out a guy named Chipcheezum, and you'll see what I mean.

Actually the "difficult" mode in Mega Man 2 is what the Japanese version's difficulty was like. After you've beaten a couple Mega Man games you start to realize how ridiculously easy 2 actually is in comparison, especially with the Metal Blade that breaks the game.

Honestly, it's shit like that makes me never want to actually play Dark Souls or other Git Gud games, because I remember playing Battletoads for WEEKS in university, and after one of my housemates finally got good enough at the speederbike level to beat it, the next level was just as bad or worse.

Like, I don't need to be THAT good at something that's supposed to be entertaining me. Any level that takes like 16 hours of training muscle memory isn't a constructive use of time.

The thing is its super hard if you're not used to that kind of videogame before. Imagine if your first videogame was Halo or CoD or something, you're so used to games where you really don't need to think or be observant. Observing patterns in games stopped being a thing for literally a decade. So learning a different control scheme and then moving a character in third person like DS is something that hasn't been mainstream since Zelda. Its damn near impossible for someone who didn't have to live through the 8 and 16 bit days.

Its true though. Everything these days have giant as fuck indicators for when something mean is coming. Grenade indicators, characters outright yelling their attacks before they make them, giant glowing charge shots to give you several seconds to take cover. Also everything being an FPS shooter is really hard for people.

If you hang around the normie forums like plebbit people whine so fucking hard when they have to use a different control scheme. They've been conditioned for years that there is only one way to play a game and anything different is impossible to control. Hell, you should have seen how angry people were that the new controller Nintendo put out for the Wii-u didn't have the Xbox360 button layout. Someone could be 16 years old right now complaining loudly on the internet and the only console they ever owned with the only controller they've ever held was and Xbox playing exclusively FPS games that all play the exact same way. Anything different is wrong for them.

The load times have been cut down on modern consoles or the pc

I think Dark Souls 3 is the most new player friendly in terms of gameplay. I love Bloodborne the most, but that first boss feels like feels like a wall designed against new players

I guess the big question is whether or not having to commit to an input is a deal breaker? If you press that button to swing or heal and the enemy decides to strike fast you're gonna take damage. It's just learning patterns and knowing when to push or back off with a lot of trial and error.

They're the perfect type of game for me and people with similar tastes, but if the same things that make DS appealing to me turn you off that's understandable and fair.

Shortly after he learned of the book’s cancellation, Casey spoke with Newsarama about his run and the series end.

Newsarama: First off, the specifics. What’s the last issue, and what reasons were given to you?

Joe Casey: Issue #24 [August] is the final issue. The reasons were completely financial. I hate it when I see people trying to spin things in their favor just to pump themselves up. Let’s just be honest here… in this particular case, it was low sales that did us in.

NRAMA: But the series got a boost from Coup D’Etat right? Was the decision made after the Coup boost trailed off?

JC: I honestly couldn’t say what the timing was in regards to Coup. I just got the call last week so I’m still kind of reeling from the news. But I knew the writing was on the wall when I heard they weren’t doing any more Wildcats 3.0 trade paperback collections - well, aside from some weird Cyberforce crossover tpb, I guess. As far as those are concerned, what’s out there now is all there is and -- as far as I’ve been told -- all there ever will be.

NRAMA: Where is that in regards to your storyline?

JC: Unfortunately, there’s not much closure for the long term plans Dustin [Ngyuen] and I had for the book. Hell, Dustin doesn’t even get to come back like he’d planned all along. Issue #24 is the final chapter of the “Coda War One” storyline and it was already written when the plug was pulled. I was actually writing issue #25 when I got the call, so when you read #24, it certainly feels like issue #25 is coming after it. But now that won’t be the case.

JC: I hesitate to say… mainly because I don’t want -- myself or anyone else -- to give up on the kind of work that I personally enjoy in comic books. I’ve been more like a “cult writer” in the mainstream for most of my career and it’s been a relatively comfortable place to be. I hate playing it safe, and I don’t want other creators playing it safe either. Guys like Chaykin and Miller and Moore showed me that you can make demands on the reader in the mainstream and it can pay off, because they essentially created a new mainstream. Maybe Wildcats was a “book out of time”. Either we were ahead of the curve or too far behind it. I don’t really know. I just know I loved it. We all busted our ass on a work-for-hire book as though we owned it, not DC. Part of me takes pride in that kind of commitment. Part of me wonders if I was a chump to care so much…

JC: That’s what the whole “Coda War One” story was supposed to be! A big, sprawling action epic before we headed into what was to be the final act of our run. Plus, we were confident that Dustin might bring back some attention with issue #25, coming fresh off his run on Batman. I guess we’ll never know if that would’ve helped…

JC: Like I said, the entire “final act” of Version 3.0 -- as Dustin and I had planned it -- would’ve lasted from issue #25 until around issue #40. The aftermath of the mission to Greece, seeing how Jack Marlowe and the Halo Corporation were going to deal with the world energy crisis and the world’s reaction to that, a controversial Presidential election and its ramifications, the return of the real Ladytron, the “Junior Wildcats”, the last Coda, and really just playing out all the various character threads that began all the way back in issue #1… all of that cool stuff will never see print.

NRAMA: Do you think Wildcats 3.0 would have done better if it was told in larger chunks, given the density of the story you and Dustin were telling?

JC: I don’t know… the density was actually what I liked about doing the series. That and the characters themselves. Actually, I’m insanely proud of how we depicted this cast of characters, the time we took to explore their personalities, the unpredictability of their actions, etc. so I don’t know if I’d want to do it any differently. I basically wrote the series I’d always wanted to read. Maybe if the book hadn’t been called Wildcats… but, again, I liked the brand identity of that name. It certainly tied into some of the themes of the series. But Scott Dunbier told me he was faced with a similar situation a few years ago, when he morphed StormWatch - which was selling for shit, despite critical raves - into The Authority. Maybe we should’ve taken a page from that playbook, but hindsight’s always 20/20…

I really liked Origins. I grew up on like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale and NWN and the first Dragon Age is really intentionally riffing on those kinda games.

They throw it out mostly in DA2, which is crap, and then kind of have their own decent game going in Inquisition. Kinda like the way Mass Effect went I felt the second game really abandoned the stakes in its narratives and made the most half-hearted nod towards player choice.

Solid assessment.

The Beef Boys barely have names, so their identity is 100% BDSM Mercenaries, which was a gag that ran it's course like the second time they showed up.
Rendazzo's arc is about his shitstain of a son, who we've seen isn't someone to care about.

Frankly, Casey's expecting a lot of carryover concern on characters from earlier volumes, and isn't working to earn it.

From CBR's Lying the Gutter column:

Last week, my favourite current superhero comics, "Wildcats 3.0" was cancelled.

And on Millarworld, a lot kicked off. Private e-mail from Paul Levitz pointed the decision firmly at Jim Lee, John Nee and Scott Dunbier, while Mark Millar went to town over how DC neuterered Wildstorm at a time when, according to Millar, "it was the coolest company around, beating out even Marvel Knights in fan buzz".

Millar states, "Three VPs in NYC told me personally that they just didn't understand why people bought these books and they did everything they could to kill them." and "They just don't dig the book and are not supporting Joe in any way because, as a VP said to me two years ago, 'the Wildstorm superhero books do nothing to improve the human condition.'"

Ed Brubaker took a similar but more sedate version, "I think the biggest difference between WS the year you were on 'Authority' (and I remember that summer, sitting at the DC table and looking at the enormous crowds around the WS tables) is that WS used to do it's own promotion and publicity. Then it got pulled inhouse. And inhouse is 3000 miles away, so they don't have quite as much time to push WS books, it seems."

But DC haven't had that much of a grasp on "Wildcats," especially since its 3.0 Eye of The Storm relaunch.

When Eye of the Storm was underway, DC bods read Joe Casey's script and were a tad flummoxed by it - all this corporate stuff, guys in suits talking. They came back and said "this does not say to us 'mature reader superheroes'." So they asked Joe Casey to sex and violence it up a bit, and paid Casey and Nguyen for additional work. Which is why there are extra pages in the first issue, presented as a bonus to the reader. It's the scene with Grifter killing a naked hooker. Cut and paste.

The plots of 2 and 3 are just awful, they remind me of most Hollywood movies. The actual character writing on the other hand was really good, so in-spite of the boring gameplay and bad mission design it was still a joy to go through because of my attachment to the characters.

And I think that's the biggest problem with the ending of 3; you don't have any real character writing, just the bare plot exposed to you and you can clearly see how stupid it is. So your last taste of the game is just dirty ass.

Anyway WildCATs right guys

Bioware-EA has definitely been a different beast to old Bioware. Andromeda doesn't look all that great: I'm personally disappointed in how lazy it comes across being an entirely new universe with all the same shit from the previous game going on. And the cutscenes, 'fill-in' writing on the trailers, etc - I just think it's going to be the same deal as 3.

The class swapping and gameplay don't bother me at all though. And I'd disagree about people not caring - loads of people are into Mass Effect. It's a very diverse group of gamers too, all sorts.

If only they knew that was a job for Star Wars.

Mass Effect is a great case study about how characters are honestly way more important than story. Yeah, you need a basic direction of course, but what people get attached to are the people going on the ride.

Like, nobody really gives a shit about the plot of ME, and the reason the ending made people so upset is because it rendered the development of the characters, and everything the player had accomplished meaningless. All of this was basically for nothing.

You cared. And it was all a waste of time.

Until someone else admits it, I will forever be convinced that it's Dogf, I mean Humphries.
>>
>>90009744
I love the idea that is was Humphries

"I personally don't like this, so we shouldn't publish it." Levitz and edgy anti-heroes, Jemas and cosmic stories.

it was definitely Humphries

I like how Bendis was kind of grooming him, making him the Mark Millar to his Grant Morrison, the James Tynion to his Scott Snyder, and yet failed astronomically.

Well, that certainly looks unplayable.

THE END

fuck, I need a drink

Errr, we should be back...Tuesday? Do we wanna read awful Thundercats comics, or start Katehunter? I'm not around much for the next week, so I encourage anyone who wants to run shit to run shit.
>>
>>90009894
Yup https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bALsBtU1TIk
>>
>>90009923
I've read Katehunter, so.

Thanks OP, for the bad as well as the good.

Thundercats! Let's keep the cats theme going!
>>
>>90009876
Same, and it explains how he got in tight with DC so quickly

>>90009923
I'd prefer to do something good after this book. (And thanks for posting regardless.)
>>

yes
>>
>>90009876
So we didn't get anything this terrific out of Marvel Summit 2017: We Have Made A Terrible Mistake, did we?
>>
>>90009879
If anything that would be the utmost encouragement to leave.
>>
>>90009923
Thundercats would be short and should be good for a laugh
>>
>>90009952
>>90009958
Is there at least a good cat-themed comic we could read?
>>
>>90009821
It'd be one thing if his book was just unmemorable, like Ultimate Adventures. But he wrote Marville, the Highlander 2 of comic books! Or, since we're talking about video games tonight, the Daikatana of comic books!
>>
>>90009923
Thundercats sounds like a one and done, so it wouldn't hurt for a mostly off week.

Thank fuck, this piece of shit is finally DONE. I vote for Katehunter. Y'all keep saying it's really good, and I'm going to trust you on that. I just need a break from garbage.
>>
>>90010012
Let's another Cranky and read Brubaker/Cooke Catwoman.
>>
>>90010022
It's five issues so either one long night or two shorter sessions, yeah

I'm here only Tuesday and Friday next week, so that'd work
>>
>>90009923
Oh, also, man, Casey, you did not earn the right to be this meta on your last page.

I can see how this run helped inspire them to send Nate in to crash this universe with no survivors. What a pit.

I wonder if Alonso et al are nervous that Soule and Lemire are going to leave them like Hickman, Fraction, KSD, and Remender did

They know Bendis will never leave and Slott won't leave unless they take Spider man from him, but they seem to rely on Soule and Lemire pretty heavily, especially Lemire

I meant specifically with regards to Marvel, because that's what the digest deal was about.

But Raina Telgemeier's sales dominance is pretty nice. It's mostly via Scholatic, right? Like the Calvin and Hobbes collections I got as a kid and treasure to this day.
>>
>>90010253
Lemire is clearly winding down his Marvel work, his creator-owned is solid and he's probably wanting to work less fanatically.

You know what's interesting? Zdarsky's gone from a 'Marvel comedy writer' to getting some big-ass properties. And they're clearly testing out a bunch of n00bs. There will always be a place for the "takes notes from Editorial and gets it done exactly to spec" company workhorse, though.

I'm honestly really sad the FBI agent died. She wasn't that bad and when the opportunity appeared to sacrifice herself to blow it all to hell she didn't hesitate to do it. But then Spartan teleports everyone BUT her out. Whatadick

>>

what's that from?

>>90010538
Stormwatch PHD. Its really good until the writer/artist change then its super generic. Starts out soooooo strong though. Putting a former super team in a police station because no budget was amusing.
>>
>>90010648
I also liked that it brought back the characters Ellis killed off in the Aliens crossover.
>>
>>90010274
What is it about Wildstorm that makes the gay shipping work so well?
>>
>>90010894
Heh yeah, the Aliens crossover was kinda silly. He could have done it very differently but all it did was ensure they cant reprint it after losing a very temporary license.

>Is there ever any info given on the Coda warpaint and/or meaning of that?
Looks cool. I think Grifter's mask also uses Coda markings. Mostly cause of Zealot's tendency to call him "brother" in 1.0
>>
>>90011488
But what about Deathblow? He has similar markings and I'm pretty sure he never did any Coda shenanigans.
>>
>>90011560
OK, you wanna know the reason? The real, top-secret, never-revealed-before reason? Alright, here it goes: they were both designed by Jim Lee

If OP (or anyone) are interested in the Witcher stuff GOG has a sale on right now

>>
>>90019509

>>
>>90006215
Is this any good?
>>
>>90022227
As a run it's not as distinctive as it was when it came out but it's still a real change of pace, and some parts remain strong. It's a huge YMMV on how much Joe Casey being edgy you can take.
>>
>>90023157
I wouldn't say it's all edginess but just in the way he delivers things. It often feels like it's done without consideration, or the wrong kind of consideration (more with getting out the speech or idea than for the comic).
