Was this a good depiction of the character?

If no, what is the best version of the penguin outside of the comics?

No contest.

I feel like Burton got the Penguin wrong. He projected his own insecurities onto the penguin, making him a "why must I be a freak" character.

He is a "why must I be a freak" character, to an extent. But really, all of Batman's villains are "why must I be a freak" types. The birth defects aren't what make him special.

He's also manipulative. charming, classy (or at least he thinks he is). He's kind of Batman's bond villain. Or, if the Joker is Batman's Iago, the Penguin is Richard III.

It's a shame, because I think every subsequent Penguin portrayal has played up the "why must I be a freak" like Burton did, and I don't think that was his main thing at all.
>>
>>90004789
I'll be curious to see how he evolves, but I feel he's not quite Penguin yet.
>>
>>90004782
Season four, even if he didn't show up as often.
>>
>>90004789
I like everything about him except that the actor's pretty tall to be nicknamed a penguin
>>
>>90004910
Gotham's take on Penguin isn't a freak, he's a toady little bitch who craves power and he's a lot of fun to watch
>>
>>90004737
I like him more as a slightly eccentric mafia don with a nickname like a Dick Tracey villain.

He does not need to be a costume supervillain with a bird gimmick or mutation. Batman doesn't always have to deal with supervillains with code names and themed gadgets.

Not accurate but good

A reinvention after Burgess Meredith's comic accurate version
>>
>>90004737
Best verison out of comics: Burgess Meredith. The weakest for me was "The Batman" version or the original design for BTAS
>>
>>90004737
I like DeVito's Penguin but he is very, very different.

Batman TAS has my favorite Penguin, if he lost the mutant sewer man aspect he'd be perfect. I really enjoy him as this eccentric upper-class thief who robs bird themed jewelry and faberge eggs or whatever just because he thinks it's exciting and dramatic.

Not all villains need to be driven by tragedy or revenge
>>
>>90004910

No one including Burton would argue against this. He was essentially an OC Burton character just like Catwoman.

Always thought it was funny how this episode makes a point of showing that Penguin can't sing - he's voiced by actual award winning singer-songwriter Paul Goddamn Williams, aka. Swan himself.
>>
I liked the mask and his voice, but I wasn't too fond of this guy. He was a weird mix of Black Mask and Penguin, but was also made redundant by both Two-Face and the main villain. He just really didn't stand out.

Beware the Batman was going to introduce Penguin in the second season and were doing some small worldbuilding around him. I wonder if they would've made him a crime lord or more of a traditional supervillain.
>>
>>90006244
Making him Penguin was a strange choice. I liked him, but he didn't seem to have an awful lot in common with the character he's based on. Plus the accent was kind of jarring.
>>
>>90004737
It's not a spot-on adaption but that's fine. Personally, I always find adaptions where the creator leaves their own recognizable thumbprint more interesting than 1:1 affairs.

Probably not a crime lord passing off as a legitimate citizen, since they revealed his true name in the news.

I don't know what they would've done with him. Maybe as a rival of Whale or something. Considering how much the show has changed, their designs for the traditional Bat rogues are strangely traditional.
>>
>>90010516
He was alright, even though he should have been Hush.
>>
>>90004737
I didn't like the message of the movie which seemed to be that ugly people are really ugly on the inside as well as outside. It also was not believable that people would elect such an ugly deformed dwarf with black sunken eyes and a long nose as mayor out of sympathy. People in real life are far more superficial than that. Also his backstory was ridiculous. His parents threw him away as a baby and he floated down the river and ended up being raised by penguins I think? I guess they were there from the Gotham zoo? I don't remember the details but it was ridiculous. The movie was still fun for what it was though. Noir and ugly, a little campy but not as bad as the next 2 movies. Catwoman was hot. Batman unapologetically killing people was amusing.
>>
>>90004782
I honestly preferred the original here, but mostly because his actual characterization was more interesting than simply "crooked nightclub owner". S4 Penguin felt too polished by comparison, like he was fit enough to keep his "high class" image, but definitely wouldn't pass as a thug playing 'gentlemen thief' the same way Meredith could.
>>90005532
Robin Lord Taylor's actually only like, 5'5". Met him at a con once, and I was surprised that he was only roughly about the same height as myself.
>>
I really liked Cobblepot in Penguin Pain and Prejudice. Burton Penguin was fun, but felt too much like Killer Croc.
>>
>>90011164

>I didn't like the message of the movie which seemed to be that ugly people are really ugly on the inside as well as outside

Except Catwoman is ugly and deformed on the inside as well and she's gorgeous. Most of the people in that movie are ugly on the inside.

> It also was not believable that people would elect such an ugly deformed dwarf with black sunken eyes and a long nose as mayor out of sympathy

None of Tim Burton's movies take place in anything resembling the real world. His Batman films are about as "real" as Edward Scissorhands or Beetlejuice.

How about the Penguin from the Arkham series?
>>
>>90014643

The glass being embedded in his eye as a monocle is fucking retarded and the most pointlessly edgy thing about the entire Arkhamverse.

As an actual character he's pretty fun though, I like the Guy Ritchie-esque interpretation of his personality.

God, there are so many interpretations of this character. I can't think of any other Batman villain who's depicted with such disparate personalities and motivations.

I mean sure they redesign the Riddler and Joker all the time, but they remain the same characters. With the Penguin, it's different every time. You guys got any idea why this might be?
>>
>>90014726
He's not as iconic a character as Joker, so people feel free to play with him and change him up. Which ultimately makes Penguin far more interesting.
>>
>>90014726

> With the Penguin, it's different every time. You guys got any idea why this might be?

Honestly, I think Burton taking such a huge divergence with the character in such a huge blockbuster had a lot to do with it.

I think people forget what a huge influence those movies had on Batman afterwords, and Burton's Joker and Catwoman at least stuck to the basic ideas of what their characters were.
>>
>>90006244
>but was also made redundant by both Two-Face and the main villain

I was hoping that they'd end up revealing that Oz was just a power-hungry shit and that while he wants revenge on the Waynes, he's more enamored by taking over from Falcone and being a crime lord.

But no, he's just a true believer in Lady Arkham's cause.
>>
>>90014726
Bat-man's rogue gallery consists of a bunch of larger than life personalities. They have to try extra hard to justify "guy in a tuxedo" being one of the A-list.
>>
>>90014692
This is how I feel. I like Arkham Penguin, but that literal bottle glass is idiotic.
>>
Cartoons and movies aside, what are the best comics stories with Penguin? I think I never read anything with him
>>
>>90016434
There was the Joker's Asylum story with Penguin. It was fantastic. Penguin attends an underworld auction and encounters a woman being sold as a sex slave. He buys her in order to free her, because he's fallen in love. They date for a while, but she eventually learns of his brutal insanity, and she tries to dump him. It ends with her back in the same cage to be sold, and Penguin giving an ironic "it's not you, it's me" breakup speech.

I could storytime it.

Gotham has my favourite non-comic Penguin, but I can't help myself, I really like him as presented in The Batman.

I know oriental martial artist Penguin is a huge leap from the traditional Penguin, but I liked him as the broke playboy heir and the fact that he was actually somewhat of a physical challenge to Batman here. Also a tiny, unassuming dude going to the Orient and learning deadly martial arts is one of my favourite things.

It wasn't really The Penguin at the time. It was this weird and fascinating Penguin + Killer Croc + Nosferatu hybrid that took the character to new heights.
It was a wild reimagining of the character that greatly expanded upon an existing basic concept. Calling it bad because it's unfaithful is like calling the Batman TAS version of Mr.Freeze bad because it's unfaithful. Most of the elements of Penguin's modern characterizations come from his portrayal in the movie. Which isn't to say you shouldn't be allowed to dislike it but you can't criticize it for being unfaithful when it more or less defined The Penguin's more distinct traits and gave a solution to the problem "how do we make a short fat guy in a tuxedo intimidating or interesting".
You can call it a Burton OC if you want but this is more or less what made the character more than a classy James Bond villain with a penguin theme. From Batman TAS to Gotham's Penguin, every iteration post-1992 owes something to this version of the character.

>>90004782
I liked that Batman TAS took The Penguin's design from the movie but stuck to his more "polished" characterization and decided to play up both of these traits. I'd probably call him the actual best even if Burton's Penguin is my favorite.
He is gross and lecherous and loses his temper and has a tragic aspect like Burton's Penguin, but he's classy, polished, intelligent and needlessly verbose, someone who fancies himself a real upstanding gentleman. And he sounds like one too.
Putting Paul Williams to voice such an ugly mutant was a genius move.

>>90014726
I'd say The Scarecrow has more reinterpretations, but yeah, Penguin has a lot of variations. It's part of why he's one of my favorite Batman villains.
>>
>>90004782
Left.
Took the best traits of both comic Penguin and burton Penguin. It was an odd fit, but it worked wonders
>>
>>90020219
Also, that part about how removing it would kill him. How deep into his skull would that thing have to be for that to happen?
Can't he at least cut the bottom off? Has he never had a loose eyelash stuck behind it?
>>
>>90014643
He looks like my grandfather.
