It's a procedural drama but Matt Ryan was so fucking perfect as John Constantine that the series itself gets a lot of praise. It's not a bad series, but it's not as good as most of the other cape shows.

He got Constantine absolutely right but the show itself was meh

What I liked about the comic is the continuity. Each arc had impact on the next. I read it thrice and I discover new things every time. The show had more a monster-of-the-week feel to me

It's tragic because by all accounts the actor was great and the show was starting to get good by the end. They just couldn't balance the set up of all the characters and plots.

I'm hoping Constantine shows up in Legends of Tomorrow or something.

You start reading Hellblazer from issue #1, then you continue until you run out of issues.
Then you skip the New 52 and DCYou iterations, and pick up at Hellblazer Rebirth.

Also, the Keanu Reeves movie of the same name is considered to be a decent movie on it's own, but a poor Hellblazer adaptation.

The CW is going to air (or have already aired, I haven't kept up) an animated series in the same vein as their Vixen shorts. It'll also see Matt Ryan reprising the role, voicing Constantine in the show. Hopefully, this could give way to a revival of the live action show itself. That'd be a wet dream for me.

It's good but it suffers from Simpsons-Did-It Syndrome. Everything it was doing and trying to set up had already been done in one way or another by Supernatural.
