I know tumblr likes to add stupid shit to character redesigns like blemishes, vitiligo, etc, but putting freckles on Lapis is not really "just because". Real lapis lazuli stones have gold pyrite speckles. Why they excluded them from the character's actual design despite that is beyond me.

I honestly think they should have just made Lapis an Aquamarine instead. She got the blue/teal color and water powers, it would have made so much sense.

But the gold pyrite inclusions are not part of the lapis lazuli crystal matrix. The Gems tend to be 'pure' representations of the minerals or rocks that they are named for.
It is interesting to note that so far only Lapis is named after a rock rather than a mineral, (Apart from Pearl not being a mineral at all). Peridot is also named after gem quality Olivine, which in turn is a generic term for two minerals, Fosterite and Fayalite. It's also notable that both Ruby and Sapphire are the same mineral- Corrundum.
I bring this up because we see in the show different Gems that are essentially the same- ie, the quartzes. Jaspar, Rose Quartz, Amythest are all SiO2. It is interesting to note that Smokey Quartz is a fusion rather than a distinct Gem on its own. It also makes me wonder if there will be any other SiO2 morphs present in the show. While I was introduced to the show by my wife because she had questions about the different minerals (I'm a geologist), I don't see any good reasoning behind their choices in names. If it had been me, I would have picked alteration minerals be the fusions.

Lapis is one of the most popular characters in the show. Everyone was excited for her reveal, everyone was eager for her to come back, everyone drew millions of angst fanart of her keeping Jasper trapped, everyone loves her bratty teenager personality (this is a general "everyone" because I know /co/ is more divided on her).

But, there's a problem with all of this: she's conventionally attractive. She has a slim, womanly shape, normal hair, and it just one palette swap away from being the pretty white teenager who has a soft spot for Steven. If there's one thing a lot of SU fans can't stand, it's thin, pretty white people. There were complaints from Bismuth fans that Lapis, a character who has arguably done worse, gets passes and excuses and is allowed to be a recurring character while Bismuth gets vilified and then bubbled away. What's the big difference between those two characters? The designs. So to the fandom, the pretty thin white girl who tried to drown two children becomes everyone's friend. The bulky black woman who has a lot of hatred against her oppressors gets stabbed by Steven and locked away.

Combine this with Lapis' popularity the response to them is natural- we make the pretty white girl actually big, ambiguously brown and "ugly" and if we pretend hard enough that's what she actually looks like. Therefore the darling of the fandom becomes a fat black person with little shape who also suffers from shit like PTSD and is bratty but the cast loves her for it.

Sometimes the rock in question will have a parallel with the character, but they usually just pick something that's the right color and suits the character ("Jasper" sounding manly, "Peridot" containing the word 'dot' so that it calls to mind technology like dot matrixes, "Holly Blue Agate" having an two-part 'first' name that calls to mind older generation names like Sue Ellen, ect).

I think Zuke commented herself that there isn't much communication between boarders so that alot of the story appears disjointed in some way.
