A big theme of Infinite Crisis was that many of DC's characters had lost their way, specifically the Trinity. Batman was paranoid, Superman was uninspiring, and Wonder Woman was a killer. The event ended with the three vowing to do some self-discovery, not-so subtly stating that the three would be revamped following the Crisis.
DC wanted a book that would bring Wonder Woman into the 21st century, that would define who she was and how she came to be in the modern day. A book that would tell readers why they should care about Wonder Woman and why she belonged on the Trinity, and what her place would be in the DC Universe.
Instead, we got this.
This is "Who Is Wonder Woman?".
This is definitely the "run", if you can call it that, that cemented in many readers' minds that Wonder Woman was a character that suffered from constant reinvention, which is definitely at least partially true.
>>89979614
Thank you
This was followed by a very short, experimental run by author Jodi Picoult, that was highly praised by some but disliked by hardcore fans, with several bad fill-ins, then a short, bad run by J. Tores that was mostly a tie-in to the Wonder Girl comic, and then the disappointing run by Gail Simone. This parade of mediocrity was especially bad following Greg Rucka's phenomenal run.
Also, Wonder Woman in a cape is underrated.
Also ironic that a comic meant to define Wonder Woman begins with not-Wonder Woman. But I am a fan of Donna as Wonder Woman, at least conceptually.
>>89979685
If the red parts of that costume were blue it would be great and would like for it to be Donna's costume now
>>89979740
Can't beat the starry costume IMO.
>>89979685
We've been getting Wondy cape the past few years. It's getting a nice resurgence, along with a greater appreciation of the hoplite mini-skirt.
I first read this years before I became an actual fan of the character. I'm reading it now to see if it's as bad as I remember.
wew lad
Stop hitting on your sister's boy, Donna.
>>89979685
>disappointing run by Gail Simone
>implying
It wasn't great but it wasn't bad either. The only truly bad thing about it was Ares' death, he went out like a bitch.
>>89979871
Hey, I personally enjoyed it. I've gotten flamed for saying it was good, though, seriously.
But still it's up there with stuff like McDuffie's JLA, and Robinson's JLA, and Waid's... JLA that all should have been really good but ended up pretty meh.
Not that I'm comparing Simone's Wondie to Cry for Justice.
Do I even need to post the theme song this time?
Probably not, but I will anyway.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1rBZIzr49k
And already things are getting stupid.
>>89979919
>I've gotten flamed for saying it was good
Of course you have, this is post-/tv/pol/ /co/, where every female writer should be shunned. I've gotten flamed for saying Louise Simonson was good, imagine that.
>>89979977
All it took was one issue of Batgirl to turn Simone from one of this board's favorite writers to one of its most hated. Very unfortunate, especially since her new Secret Six and Clean Room are good.
If you didn't tell me that was Psycho I'd have no idea and would have just figured the artist didn't know how to draw leg proportions.
Also speaking of Psycho how did they miss the opportunity to have Peter Dinklage be the villain of the Wonder Woman movie?
Oh shit! I read this before I even knew who Nemesis was, too, so this is a nice surprise.
>>89979685
Didn't she get a total "who am I?" run right after that as well? JMS I think?
This could have been a kind of interesting story. Remember when the I-Ching era got storytimed here and there were all those interesting articles about it?
>>89980097
Yep, and instead of mediocre like all these, it was actively horrendous.
>>89980044
Is Psycho supposed to be medically short or just a manlet?
It was silly and not very well written but there were a lot of concepts that were good and even stayed even with Gail
Such as Agent Diana and non-Steve
I just like those classic elements and wish writers didn't trash it just because Perez.
>>89980170
He's a dwarf, not a manlet.
>>89980170
He's a legit dwarf. It's just this artist doesn't understand proportions.
>>89980184
Yes, Perez was what made me a fan of the character but the more I read the more I saw slavish adherence to his ideas was harming a lot of runs. That's why Rucka was such a breath of fresh air.
The Picoult run goes more into the Agent Prince aspect but I actually didn't read that one, maybe I finally will now.
Oh and almost forgot that a few issues in we get launched into Amazons Attack!, the infamously bad crossover.
>kinder, gentler Wonder Woman
See, IMO that shouldn't be a thing anyone can say. Like "I'm a friendlier Superman" or "I'm a nastier Jonah Hex".
>>89980125
Agent Diana Thick
Also she says that while literally redirecting a bullet directly through Dr. Poison's throat.
>>89980266
>Perez was what made me a fan of the character
how does no one talk about how INSANE it is that all the amazons are reincarnated women of pre-history who had been killed by men?
i love his run stuff fwiw
I'm here for the Dodsons art. After their run on Harley, those guys could sell me anything
Thanks OP
>>89980326
Did she just kill Dr. Poison?
Bruce does seem a bit more chill here. That didn't last long.
>>89980369
Yeah I do bring that up whenever someone complains about black or Asian Amazons. I think it'd be an interesting point if they ever brought it up after the first issue.
>>89980266
Picoult was bad and led into Amazons attack
Also, Allan Heinberg is clearly a fan of the TV show, which is why he introduced the Agent prince stuff (that was reminiscent from the bronze age but mostly from the show) and even the spin to make her have powers
By the way, if some don't know this yet, he's the writer for the movie
>>89979871
Ares IS a bitch tho. He always has been. He always will be.
>I've gotten flamed for saying it was good, though, seriously.
Where? Here? This place has always been a shithole. Who cares?
>>89980426
Only because he's buddies with Johns.
>>89980426
I didn't know that actually, what the fuck.
I mean, at least it's someone who likes the comics, I guess.
>>89980097
And /co/ loved JMS because pants.
>>89980347
>>89980406
Was this at the tail end of the Bruce/Diana shipping that had been going on in JLA?
That does make me hopeful we'll get a "spin" in the movie.
>>89980452
I think wonder woman might be the only comic he wrote though

>>89980507
he did Young Avengers

>I-Ching is in New 52 now
Good things still happen in this world.
>>89980493
This was quite a bit after that, I don't think there'd even been a hint of it in at least four or five years.
>>89980452
>Giganta
>brilliant scientist
Why is this never a thing? How come Giganta has never built a death ray or a destructo-bot? Is she just a shitty scientist like all of Batman's villains?
>>89980467
did they???
>>89980552
Because Giganta rarely appears to begin with
Being Cassie is suffering.
>>89980547
I-Ching is such a retarded name, like "Cyborg" or "Katana".
>>89980567
I'm a pretty oldfag Wonder Woman fan, so I remember. It was the same effect the Azz run had. It was seen as an exciting reboot that finally 'fixes' Wonder Woman's problems (ie costume) to the people of /co/ who have never read a fucking Wonder Woman comic before.
So they looked for any excuse to praise it.
>>89980547
Ah yeah, I was thinking of the end of Kelly's run, and issue #90

ouch, right in the size fetish
>>89980746

That's right
LMAO
Coffee time, brb.
>>89980810
Don't do this to me
If it were up to me I'd turn Doris into Wondy's very own John Henry Irons. A villain that can become a giant isn't terribly riveting, but as an ally a writer could explore her scientific background.

>>89981216
What has peeg been in lately? What are her better runs?
Three issues in and so far basically nothing has happened and we're still in the same spot.
>>89981244
Her most high-profile appearance lately was a guest role in Harley Quinn.
She's more of a fan-favorite due to her important role in Roy Thomas' JSA comics: All-Star Comics, All-Star Squadron, and Infinity Inc. She had a major role in Johns' JSA as well.
In addition you'll want to look at JSA Classified #1-4 that created her post-Infinite Crisis origin, and Palmiotti, Conner and Gray's outstanding run on her solo book.
Keep in mind Peej has had a somewhat... troubled history post-Crisis. Since her entire deal was she was just Earth-Two Supergirl, with there not being an Earth-Two they tried a lot of different things to give her a new origin. She was synonymous with Donna Troy and Hawkman for having too many complicated backstories.
Things got streamlined post-IC so she's once again just an alternate Supergirl.
So it's just "these are all of Wonder Woman's villains! They're teaming up to fight Wonder Woman because I wrote them that way!"
Oh boy, this old argument again.
Three issues into the story arc called Who Is Wonder Woman and we still don't have anything close to an answer to that question.
And that's the problem with this story, it keeps telling us we're going to explore who Wonder Woman REALLY is but doesn't actually do that.
I'm seeing double-- four Wonder Women!
>>89981060
I prefer the dark stormy night desu, it's more dramatic
More Peejcake
It's nice when everyone else is drawn with something resembling realistic boob sizes so that Power Girl actually stands out.
>>89981544
Wew Wondy-Circe
Is she always specifically designed for the most fanservice possible?
>Thor is a woman
>Wonder Woman is a man

Circe? Yes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIxfYO2nBGo
>>89981651
Well let's see here, Stargirl and Cassie are supposed to still be teens, Liberty Belle was a more conservative costume, and Diana is only drawn from the head. Who is second left supposed to be? Same face as Liberty Belle, but different costume
I seriously love the invisible jet, always have, always will.
>>89980836
Gail Simone did that.
Every Wondie comic needs just a little bondage.
Marvel's Herc would never do this
>>89981934
Yeah, she kinda did but didn't do all that much with the concept. Still, I appreciate the effort, even if it didn't stick.
I have no clue what's supposed to be occurring with the tiara and lasso here
Classic spin with a side of cheesecake
>>89982071
Dat Sailor Moon transformation
Because of the poor reception, the numerous delays, the creative shuffling, and of course the notorious Amazons Attack, the rest of the story just got dumped into this annual!
>though my name was eventually cleared
What? When? How?
>>89980836
I say that there should be a second Wonder Woman book that focused on Diana and ARGUS recruiting different Wonder Woman villains for specific missions.
Barbara Ann is their archaeologist and mythology expert.
Doris when they need a neuroscientist
Maru comes in when they need a poison specialist
Dr. Cyber for when they need technology
And then they can focus on facing more minor villains like Queen Clea, Osira, Blue Snowman, etc
>>89982137
Just like Johns' Last Son, which had HORRENDOUS delays.
>>89982199
Speaking of...
>>89982137
Pretty damn amazing (amazoning hahaha) that a book managed to only last five issues, with two #1's. But really, all this has been is a boss rush of every notable WW villain
>>89982214
That at least gave us the Busiek fill-ins
>>89982240
This issue even reads like it's just a Wikipedia entry about Wonder Woman's rogues
>>89982299
Damn, dwarfs are considered disfigured? That's harsh Diana
I like how all the girls with big boobies are up front and the men are way in the back
>>89982248
Yeah, those were nice, even if they make no sense in the timeline of the story.
Shame Chris couldn't be Supes' son. Nothing against Jon, but Chris was so much better. I also liked the idea that Clark and Lois would never be able to have a biological son, it adds some much needed pathos to their already legendary love story.
>>89982340
Whoops, got my three "doctors" on that page mixed up
>Barely
Diana acknowledging that this story is boring and unmemorable
Cheetah definitely should be strong enough to not get choked out by Batman
>>89982434
Also check Tim's legs in that middle panel
... Diana, what?
>>89982460
It's like they started drawing Cass then switched to Tim when they got to the waist.
Was it the Simone run with the "NEMESIS, HAVE MY BABY NOW" moment? I can't picture her writing that
>Invincible #110
>>89982504
Simone does have quite a few baby-crazy characters
For reference, Part 4 of this story was issue 4. This, part 5, came out after issue 12.
>>89982547
Shit, it was her. She literally tells him that she wants a family ASAP, and then realizes that she does not really love him, but instead just wants a baby
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nemesis_(DC_Comics)#cite_ref-11
>>89982654
Young Avengers had crazy delays too. This is why you don't hire TV/movie people for important arcs (Whedon's Astonishing, Lindelof's Wolvie vs. Hulk, Kevin Smith's entire body of comic book work...)
So this did absolutely nothing to establish what Wonder Woman's personality is like and instead just ends with a summary of shit everybody knows.
>>89982761
Even Bruce's pecs are gigantic
>>89982779
Dodson just loves chests
Ha, so this pretty much just ends with the status quo of the 70's TV show.
>>89982784
Good to see an annual ending with a story called "Backstory"
>>89979587
>and Wonder Woman was a killer.
So why the fuck haven't they dialed back down on that shit yet then? Earth One had the right idea.
"I guess just go read Perez's run instead, sorry guys"
>>89982849
It was a little after this era that she went back in that direction, just as Batman became more grimdark again and Superman a little edgier.
Part of it I think is the failure of stories like this to actually convey WHO she is and why she doesn't run around with a sword lopping heads off.
>>89982931
Holy shit, look at that face on Donna. Poor Donna, getting another backstory dump
All-Star Superman re-popularized the idea of Superman being nice, inspiring and more wholesome, though it took a few years to really catch on. I was hoping Earth One might do the same but the reception to it wasn't exactly stellar.
Did Bendis write this page?
>>89983016
He literally looks just like Brad Pitt in that third panel.
And that's all she wrote.
Thanks for enduring along with me, I hope you learned who Wonder Woman is from this, because I sure didn't!
>>89982931
>Part of it I think is the failure of stories like this to actually convey WHO she is and why she doesn't run around with a sword lopping heads off.
yeah, I really think DC REALLY needs to just take a step back, really analyze who WW is and what she stands for, dial the violence down for fucks' sakes, and give us the definitive WW run already. For starters, we need to follow Earth One's heed.
>>89983074
Thanks for posting!
>>89983111Hola!
>>89983074
I learned that Terry Dodson loves his giant racks, and that Frank Cho face might have started with him
>>89982805
It's the Charlton Chews!
>>89979685
What was so experimental about Jodi Picoult's run. I hear it often compared to Finches' run.
>>89985029
Well that's what I'd like to find out.
But apparently it's about Diana as an "alien" or immigrant to man's world, despite her living in man's world for years at this point. She doesn't understand simple aspects of technology and society. There's a lot of talk about Themyscirans being inhuman and alien, despite the fact that they've never really been depicted as such. There's an odd rift between Diana and her mother that clashes with her previous characterization.
Overall it seems to be one of THOSE: a writer from outside comics doesn't take the time to do any sort of research on the character, makes sweeping changes and attempts to more deeply explore things that have already been explored by writers with more reverence for the material. The writing is apparently also pretty "tell, don't show", which I think isn't unusual for prose writers.
And this is complicated by the intrusion of the Amazons Attack storyline.
As for comparison to Finch, I've never really thought about it, but they both seem to fail to characterize the Amazons as anything but two-dimensional warriors with a herd mentality. And also writing Diana as someone who spends a lot of time monologuing to herself.
>>89980721
>Wonder Woman should wear pants
I'm not totally opposed to giving her pants but I prefer the classic look.
>Wonder Woman shouldn't fly, etc.
But this one is true.
Wonder Woman killing is retarded though.
>>89980044
Could be they weren't sure Dinklage would go for the character. Dr. Psycho is kind of a creepazoid.
Or more likely they've never heard of Dr. Psycho.
>>89980495
Tom, you're literally looking at an image of Wonder Woman dressed in white, next to Wonder Woman dressed in white and not realizing who she is.
>>89980547
>I'm going to find Wonder Woman
>He says, as he walks away from Wonder Woman
I hope he never figures it out. The entire run is just him bouncing plans off Diana as to how to draw out Wonder Woman.
>>89982181
It was mentioned early on in this book that the courts found her to be not guilty. It happened in Manhunter. Which was a really great book that was cancelled before its time.
>>89979871
Editorial killed it before it had a chance to live. Superman and Batman were doing huge things at the time, and Simone wamted to follow suit. Yet JL kept on getting the right to affect her books lead character over her. Oh but lol, THAT book got micro managed into stillbirth too.
>>89982805
Oh so we're just going to ignore that part in his history where he drove Bronze Tiger off the deep end because he didn't want a black man leading the Suicide Squad.
Not one word of that was hyperbole, Sarge Steel a shit.
>>89988067
I need to reread her run. Weird shit kept happening in it, that I either did not pay close enough attention to, or it was poorly explained. Stuff like the space adventures of the gods and stuff
>>89979685
Gail Simone's run was fine. She clearly got what the character was about and was able to work with the shit that ended up in her lap. She even tried to give Diana some dating/romance that wasn't Steve Trevor. Seriously, most writers made her a nun because god forbid you write about Diana getting some dick wrong.
It's not going to be collected in some criterion, but I appreciated the steps she took.
>>89982240
