I can't wait until the Patreon model comes crashing down.

It's literally the "People still paying for AOL" method of making money.

Retards who don't realize they are being bilked for 5 bucks a month because they liked something one time.

It's fucking crazy. I was on dA earlier looking at some shit, and found an artist who is at the top of the "Top for 24 Hours" category, and I checked out her page. She's got a Pateon for a "story" she's making that's literally just a few sentences from her (clearly ESL) and a random anime chick posed. She's got 1,600 people giving her money every month, but of course she hides how much she's making. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that most of them aren't chipping in one buck a month.

Who the fuck are these gullible pieces of shit? No one should in their right mind be earning anywhere near that much money for doing literally nothing.

It makes me think that I could go out, change the color palette of a bunch of people's art, claim it's original, say I am working on a story, and do the same god damn thing.

He seems to keep his actual monthly income a secret. I can't find it anywhere on the page. This said, even if ALL of his 4,000 supporters pledged the dead minimum of $1 each, that's still enough for him to live very comfortably on.
>>
>>89966811
To be fair that tranny was cute as fuck before it started shoving rivets in its face.
>>
>>89967134

It's not a bad model in and of itself. There's a few podcasts I like. I chip in $2 per episode. They produce extra free content for patrons every month as well as staying motivated to keep producing content on the regular. I don't begrudge $6 per week for stuff I want to keep happening. What is that, the cost of a couple of slices of pizza and a pop? That's fine by me.
>>
>>89967147

That's what they are all doing nowadays in order to keep up the facade that they aren't making enough money. It's sheer dishonesty.

Guys who tell you exactly how much they make a month I can respect to some level, even if I don't like what they are doing or think they are just taking advantage of poor saps. At least then they are fully informing anyone who might be considering giving them cash that, "Hey -- I make this much money a month, you really think I should be getting your 5 bucks?"
>>
>>89967171

The problem is that some people, like in the scenario I just mentioned, are simply willfully taking advantage of the model.

They aren't actually working on what they claim to be working on, they're just drawing and then attaching a few lines of poorly constructed fluff in order to prevent the whole scheme from collapsing in on itself.

If I was somehow a popular socialite, with zero marketable skills in this sector (I half one half, not the other), I would honestly just go out, find an artist who would be willing to churn out content for a percentage of Patreon bux, and do that. It takes no effort on your part to do this.

As for the Podcasts thing, do they ever advertise during them? Really think about it. Your brain might tune it out, but go back and check. Is there mention of Patreon? Audible? <Insert Monthly Box Here>? Any of those things? Because I can tell you right now, you're being taken advantage of otherwise.
>>
>>89967177

I was wondering about that and I just had a look at everyone I pledge to on Patreon, and every one of them show the amount they're getting per month. Makes me feel good that I'm only supporting principled people who aren't trying to scam or bullshit their actual or potential supporters.
>>
>>89966811

So progresso.
>>
>>89967134

>It makes me think that I could go out, change the color palette of a bunch of people's art, claim it's original, say I am working on a story, and do the same god damn thing.

But you haven't, have you? Stop whining about people utilizing the free market more successfully than you.
>>
>>89967217

I couldn't do this because I'd get shut down real fucking quick once someone caught on to my dishonesty.
>>
>>89967208
>As for the Podcasts thing, do they ever advertise during them? Really think about it. Your brain might tune it out, but go back and check. Is there mention of Patreon? Audible? <Insert Monthly Box Here>? Any of those things? Because I can tell you right now, you're being taken advantage of otherwise.

Well, you know it's funny. The podcasts I listen to DO have advertisements, but the patron-only version are generally ad-free. This said, I mostly listen to comedy podcasts who are given free reign to produce their own ads as they see fit, and sometimes the ads are so entertaining in their own right that I actually listen to the non-patron versions so I can get a few bonus laughs from that. I certainly don't resent the people I like and admire the talent of making money by doing the things I like and admire them for.
>>
>>89967236

I don't like Podcasts as a rule because they are lazy. A lot of comedians figured out that they couldn't make it on radio (hell, some radio personalities figured it out too), and so they decided to just do Podcasts. It's way easier than going on stage and having to hammer out material over the course of a year so you can put together a single half to hour long set.

I know that I am coming off as a ranting lunatic, but there's a lot of people out there who look at Patreon with disgust because it disrupts many individual trades. Often in a bad way.

It's a bit hyperbolic, but if comedy podcasts suddenly superseded comedy lounges as the primary track for comedians to potentially get other work/projects off the ground -- then you'd see a massive deflation of people in this sector; which could lead to the wholesale destruction of a superior craft.

It takes a lot of work not to just be able to write jokes, and tell them, but to also have stage presence. Podcasts effectively eliminate two of those sections of labor, and as a result appeals to the lowest common denominator.
>>
>>89967134
>>89967208
I can't understand why anyone would have a problem with this. If they find an audience to support them good on them. They get to do what they like to do. And their supporters get to feel good about supporting them. It's win-win.
>>
>>89967293

In the situation that I outlined, the person in question is deceiving the people supporting them. You don't see a problem with that? If they instead went to Kickstarter, asked for a couple grand in cash to make... say an artbook? That'd be one thing. No deception is being made. Assuming of course they delivered on the artbook.

Instead, here we have a person who asking for money to create something that they aren't actually creating.
>>
>>89967307
I don't actually know about the case in detail you're referencing. Notwithstanding, the people supporting them don't see it as a problem so is it really a problem?

It's way easier than going on stage and having to hammer out material over the course of a year so you can put together a single half to hour long set.

The only ones I listen to who work as comedians who also have podcasts are Paul F. Thompkins and Scott Auckerman, and they both regularly tour, do events and stuff. In fact, Paul F. Thompkins's podcast is always recorded in front of a live audience, so this literally is the same material one way or the other. Auckerman's podcast sometimes does the same thing; he'd done intercontinental tours, in fact. The other comedy podcasts are people doing the sort of material which generally wouldn't translate well to live set performances, like film reviews for instance.

>I know that I am coming off as a ranting lunatic

Yes, that's true.

That's absurd and I'll tell you why. What you're saying amounts to "If you have the skills to make people laugh on a stage, then you're worthy of making an income from doing so. But if your particular set of skills are better-suited to making them laugh in their own home, then you should not do so, because then people who have non-overlapping skill sets and who set out to entertain in a different way might suffer."

If I'm wrong I'm wrong.

In which case I'll just say that 85% of something is better than 100% of nothing, and I'm still cool with giving a podcast I like the cost of a slice of pizza every time they put ten hours of work into producing a new episode.
>>
>>89967134

On the plus side, I'm a moderately decent artist and the kind of shlock I see people peddling on Patreon, and get absolutely disgusting amounts of money for, shows me that if I were to suddenly start shilling my work online I could make some decent coin. It boosts my self-esteem and my desire to improve so I can actually sell shit I'm proud of.

I laughed until it hurt when someone simply replied "I hope you get black lung."

>>

So hold on, let me be clear on your angle here.

I should withhold money which is such a trivial sum that I don't even notice it disappearing from my bank account, as should everyone else, in order to punish them for wanting to make a living doing something which they enjoy and other people appreciate, in, what? The hopes that they will then stop producing the content which I enjoy?

This really strikes me as a self-destructive level of cynicism you're promoting here, bordering on anhedonic misanthropy.

Patreon is a great way to support artists I like. Everybody whines about people who go AWOL, like Spoony, but the fans who support him deserve to lose their money, then. I support A Fox in Space and Otaking, and I have no problem admitting that because their art is something that's almost completely non-existent every where else.

>As for the Podcasts thing, do they ever advertise during them?

I just want to revisit this one point before being done with this thread. I was just now listening to today's new episode of one of my favourite podcasts, and they had one of their in-house advertisements near the beginning of the show. I quite literally shrieked with laughter at the punchline at the end of their ad. There's no sequence of words which you can type which will make me angry that they manage to make money off of that in a show which they provide freely to the public.

If you're into sci-fi, try "ars PARADOXICA", "Wolf 359", or "Archive 81".

It's possible but:

*taxes because he's too small to avoid them completely and is receiving the money personally, not as a business, and:

*hosting costs because he may not make money through ad serving but his website is still his primary income, and his traffic is considerable, and:

*complying with his various other costs like merchandising, maintenance and replacement of equipment, and so on, and:

*costs of business-dependent functions like attending cons, etc, and:

*on top of all that rent/mortgage payments, utilities, necessities, etc etc etc.

He's probably still doing OK, but "$10,000 a month!" is a freakishly stupid way of looking at it. Just based on a single person with a $120k annual income his tax liability would be about $23k for federales alone, plus state; the IRS is going to take a dim view of that all being "unearned" income from investment or whatever.

Assuming he still lives in Maryland that's an additional $5.5k in taxes alone, so he's down to like $90k before you even started looking at food or rent; if his household income is higher his taxes get even crazier - but conversely, if he's not single and his partner doesn't work, household expenditure is going to go up unless they live in a box under his bed.

He's probably not living on ramen but it's not as if he's even in the top centile for household income.

>>89967147
$4000/month would leave him with an annual income below the national median (by about $5k, most years); hardly raking it in and a very uncertain way of earning.

On $48k/yr he'd be paying the first $8k in income taxes alone.
>>
>>89977079
But wouldn't he also get to claim a lot of those very items you listed as expenses on his taxes and thus get a break?

That depends on what they are. It's a myth that you can just claim anything and everything as a business expense and have a rebate on it - and it depends on where you live, the size of your company, and so on.

As any sort of private citizen, however, the answer is "no". There's no rebate available for server hosting, etc.

>>89977896
His taxes in Canada would be on something between CAN$157,000 (the upper limit) and CAN$63,000 (the lower limit).

Canadian taxation would eat up between CAN$40,000 and CAN$12,000 assuming he lives in Ontario (where most people live) and treating his Patreon income as "self-employed" income. It's aboot CAN$5,000 less if he's somehow managed to turn that income into something that comes direct to a shell company that in turn employs him, and has magically convinced the Mounties that this obvious one-man-band has a drummer, a bassist, and a chorus line who also do blowjobs in the dressing room. Otherwise he's probably paying the higher rates.

If he's not in Ontario then (by number of states) it's about 50/50 whether he's paying more or less - but in the states where it's higher, it's usually considerably so, with Quebec being the highest (and as one of the more populous states, also a more likely place to live) at CAN$45,000.

Of course, since he's being paid in USD$ and converting to CAN$ he may have fees payable on the whole sum (but taxed on the whole sum regardless) so even the presumably lower cost of living in the Great White North isn't necessarily leaving him better off.

As a US Citizen, he's also liable to pay US Federal taxes on his earnings regardless of where he lives.

The Patreon model is still better than Kickstarter or anything of the likes. If you donate to a kickstarter, you're donating a large sum of money at once without knowing if you're about to be cucked or not. With Patreon, you give the creators a little bit of money a month and you can drop support anytime you're unsatisfied.

I do believe that lazy artists/creators shouldn't be making money but retards also deserve to waste their money on a shitty product.

In an interview before patreon even existed he said he was making 6 figures from ad rev and products alone

Patreon only doubled what he was making off of QC before.

QC at its peak before the 3rd wave of webcomics with Homestuck and all of the ones that followed was THE webcomic.

And you have to bare in mind he's been making around that much for a long time. QC matched what he made at his job around the second year in; enough that he quit when he was fed up

That's when I dropped all plans to become a freelance graphic designer (now that desktop publishing is completely dead and actual design jobs are impossible to find) and work on making an interactive digital web comic with a heavy emphasis on design rather than illustration.

Research tells me to expect an unbelievable amount of competition and will take about 6yrs to be any good. I'm good with that.

His comic has been online for over ten years. The reality is that being 'leagues ahead' of someone is really sort of irrelivent because the important part is actually producing something. While you spent your time being leagues ahead and not putting anything out there, he was producing stuff. People will accept freaking sketches of stickpeople as long as there's something resembling a story to go along with the sketches of stickpeople. The artwork is only the descriptive medium used to convey the story. More technically proficient artwork is preferable, but not at the cost of production. The less you produce, the more you'll have to be just that much better you'll have to be from a technical level.

Also, consider that, for whatever reason, supporters support artists that they personally like regardless of their actual skill level. The people that supports, say, thunt (goblins), actually *LIKE* him as a person for the most part. They grew to like him over the years due to his producing a comic and interacting with his fans and followers.

Source: I used to work as a colorist on a webcomic that did pretty well but flamed out at a critical moment about ten years ago for a variety of reasons.

>Retards who don't realize they are being bilked for 5 bucks a month because they liked something one time.
They know, they just don't care. People are very loose with their disposable income. They will throw away their money and be entirely happy getting next to nothing for it. It's a very sophisticated panhandling system.

Honestly it just makes me think how many homeless could be benefiting instead. thousands of dollars to fund shitty webcomics and porn games the creators don't even need the money to make just seems like a horrible injustice
>>
>>89968151
The thing is it's not actually about talent, it's about popularity. People have awful taste and nothing can ever be done to fix it. Improving your skill will earn you nothing, whoring yourself to the lowest common denominator however will make you rich.
>>
>>89968151
Yup, like the saying goes "The customer is always right." You could make the next Mona Lisa and it'd probably only get 2 likes on Facebook and a spam comment unless you give them what they want
>>
>>89992716
>people earning money because they put in effort to provide a content and service other people are willing to pay for is a horrible injustice, because the content creators aren't dirt poor so therefore they don't "need it"

Why aren't you donating all your extra money to the homeless, anon? You could easily cut going to the movies, only own 4 pairs of anything from the Goodwill or wal-mart, buy the cheapest kind of groceries, plan your spending, live frugally, and I'm sure you could donate a huge chunk of your paycheck to them. It's a horrible injustice if you don't, you know.

Homeless people should start patreons and sketch some pencil drawings to get back on their feet. Just sign up at their local library and get some easy tumblrbux
>>
>>89990269
>then again i post like one thing every 6-12 months
So then you're not "leagues ahead" because they're miles ahead of you in terms of discipline, producing volume, steady update schedule, building reputation and brand value and reminding people they exist etc

It doesn't matter how good you supposedly are if you don't actually put in the time and effort to regularly produce and upload stuff. You're whining that it's unfair you're not getting money for literally fucking doing nothing just for "having talent".
>>
>>89967177
If you like and consume the content they produce you can pay for it, regardless of how much they're earning. Paying for entertainment you consume and content you value isn't some welfare operation dependent on people's income levels, anon.

If they manage to create a very popular product, this naturally results in them making more money, as is right and just.

They'd actually make shitloads of money. It'd be so cool to support a literal starving artist like that. Imagine, someone drawing lewds on commission while actually living on the street, you could feel like a good person for paying money for your porno.
>"Id' rather draw sex for money than have to have sex for money know what I'm saying pls commission me"

Of course they'd actually have to be somewhat good, but.
Or they could start a quirky-cute "I'm so depressed and adult life is hard" webcomic about actual problems one faces while being a hobo
I'd pay for that, if the humor was on point
>>
>>89993441
But anon, I do. l've donated to childrens international, partnership for the homeless, a couple of artist patreons, I've had periods of unemployement that have taught me the best options for cheap food, I buy like 5 articles of clothing a year just to replace whatever's worn out, and who the fuck buys movie tickets when you can pirate.

Really im just upset QC of all things gets ten grand a month

Popular things have an awful tendency to suck though. Many times the amount of money funding it has an inverse impact on the quality. Its the strange paradox of consumerism

so what? A lot of people are a bit stupid, simple, and have simple taste. Such is life and the nature of mankind. If they choose to give money to mediocre stuff because it caters to them and they get enjoyment off it, they can do that.

Actually, /co/ completely ignored QC until Claire came out. It's weird, the thing is super popular by webcomic standards but none of the "main" sites (4chan, reddit, etc) ever had a huge following for it.

Super fast update rates and continuity of some sort no matter the content seem to be the winning formula for getting a popular webcomic.
>>
>>89995693
I'm not surprised. When it comes to /co/, most anons only care if it's hot or horrible. Anything in-between is sort of 'meh.' There isn't really anything /co/ likes that gets as much attention as QC and the likes
