This sequence fascinated me so much as a kid. Darla was the only thing I remembered from this movie looking back.

Well, she's a pastiche of Shirley Temple so...I'm guessing drunk/strung out on a couch somewhere.

Seriously, Shirley Temple's story was sad as fuck

The villains in this movie were great for little kids. They did an amazing job being threatening without ever being scary.

History recently repeated with Zootopia.

the guy who did Feherlofia has another opinion

>CARTOON BREW: First of all, your involvement in Disney’s Emperor’s New Groove is quite surprising. How did this come about and what was the experience like for you?

>MARCELL JANKOVICS: Originally the film’s title was Kingdom of the Sun and its director was Roger Allers. My film Fehérlófia (1981) was recommended to him by Charles Solomon, the animation critic and historian, and Roger invited me.

>I was interested. It suited me. The story at the time—a young Quechuan llama shepherd becomes an Inca and unites with his lover after great adventures—both mythical and historical, was very similar to my movie János Vitéz.

>Also, I needed the money to continue working on The Tragedy of Man. Disney gave me a generous offer; I asked them to double it. In the end we came to terms. Plus, I wanted to see the studio. So I said yes.

>For two-and-a-half months I worked on inventing and designing the storyboard for a mythical prologue. Two weeks I spent in Burbank, the rest of the time I worked from home. Roger and his staff seemed to be content with my work.

>Then the top management replaced Roger—Burbank’s most successful director up to that time after Walt Disney—with Mark Dindal. The script was rewritten, and what I had made wasn’t used in the ruined, stupid, kitschy final version.

>Still, my name is in the credits. I learned a lot and made friends with the people there. Even today I use a few colored pencils I filched from the studio.

>>
>>89968510
You haven't even watched JoJo have you?
>>
>>89975194
Yeah, I know.
Still, though, one wonders about what might have been.
Also, I've never actually seen The Emperor's New Groove and don't really think the 90s was Disney's best period in animation, so now I have no idea if it's good or not
>>
>>89975250

it's really funny. that i can promise.
90s renaissance probably ended with that movie.
>>
>>89975277
>90s renaissance
See, I don't really like the different classifications of Disney movies according to how Disney viewed them (it's mostly due to how well they did at the box office)

But I dunno, I don't like how -tonally- there's not a lot of distinction in 90s Disney, especially compared to earlier. The Hunchback of Notre Dame sticks out because what it has in common with other 90s Disney movies (the comic relief side characters) is by far the worst part of the movie.
>>
>>89975482

they were ALL musicals. sure, with different themes, but all had characters singing for the sak of it, to make the audience feel engaged.
>>
>>89976130
No, I mean tone. A general feel for things. How the movie is presented.
The art styles and visual designs are similar.
The jokes and slapstick are similar.
Comic relief characters were in their specific niches.
Villains were all presented in a similar fashion.
Setting was presented in a similar fashion.
The scale of threat relative to the protagonist is similar.
And the musical formats were similar.

Sure there are exceptions, but there are enough rules laid down that the overall tone of 90s Disney movies is for the most part uniform.

It's like if you had a bunch of different kinds of pizza from one pizza place. They might have different toppings, but they all taste alike.
>>
>>89977064

formula.

funny thing, recent disney movie have formula too. borrowed from pixar.

it's nearly always girls who trick guy into helping him, the separate and reunite, and they often end up in unfamiliar territory and we see how they both react to it.

Disney is no better, these last two Star Wars movies show bunch of diverse people fighting evil empire made of old white people.

And their recent animations... BH6 have a "diverse" cast white guy who's a lame comedy relief, Zootopia was supposed to be one big accusation that racism is the fault entirely of white people, fortunately they were told to knock it off and we got rushed movie that say "lets get along despite our differences" Moana sugarcoats Polynesian mythology showing how cool their little world is.

You're both right *and* wrong. Minorities are for brownie points, majorities are safe targets, but majorities are the box office draws, and minorities are borderline poison, so you have to run this bait & switch where "look our cast, so diverse!" BUT "Ryan Gosling teaches John Legend the true meaning of Jazz". You see? The white people have to be front & center, and are the punchline, but the minorities have to all be present.
