Cell animation usually uses 3-4 layers to save on animation labor. Like, if a character isn't moving anything but their mouth for a few seconds, they'll just do a frame of the character without a mouth then put some layer another cell with the mouth on top of it. In cheaper shows like Ninja Turtles, sometimes a moving arm will accidentally be painted a slightly different shade of green than the body, so it sticks out.

Even high-budget shows do this with the backgrounds so they don't have to re-draw the background in every shot.

More of a "painted" look, more difficult to correct a mistake so oftentimes minor off model situations have to slide (in favor of animator's instincts for movements).

Digital coloration is very uniform and exact and tends to not have as much depth (the minimum acceptable effort is much lower). Tablet tools make each frame perfectly on model and assembly line.

Digital isn't all bad, it looks really cool when it plays to the strengths like Samurai Jack or FLCL.

But in general the "moving painting" look of cel animation is much prettier.

Examples? From my experience anime has similar problems with digital, it has this overproduced sheen to everything and the bloom and processing looks disgusting.

Yes there are exceptions, but i've not seen ANYTHING that looks like cel animation.

When you shoot on cells you always loose a slight amount of brightness which I think makes the whole colour scheme more harmonious. In digital, everything is as bright and primary as computers can make it.

Interesting to note that on the original cel, bruns suit appears more green but comes out as blue when shot and processed. Maybe that's why Burns' suit is this green colour in the new episodes?
