man, Trees is still going? i couldn't get through two issues. i'm old enough to remember when an Ellis comic used to be something to look forward to. he kinda ruined that with his "hard drive crash." odd how even after that he still experiences delays in every single comic he's attached to, apart from Moon Knight, if i recall correctly.

So this is the 3th full reboot?
And why does it feels like they set up a cinema universe? This looks more like GI Joe or Transformers movie thing.
I get that it tries to be modern, more "real", but that isnt really Wildstorm universe.

This issue feels bland, i get it, they try to set up the various properties, but Ellis could write it better.

As i saw that announcement, i wasnt sure if i should order it or not. But after reading im glad i didnt preordered it.

Even that the original was cheesy, this cheeesyness dont do it for me. this isnt wildstorm, its the husk of wildstorm with a cybernetic DC-Cinema universe skeleton underneath it.

>>89945690
Comics are cover dated a few months after they're actually released. It's a remnant of old magazine publishing practices, it let them keep the issues on the rack for longer without seeming out of date. I think a few regular magazines still do it too.
>>
>>89947145

>give it some time.
No, will pass it. Even the 2nd Reboot felt more like Wildstorm than this.
For me it seems more like the CDU that failed hard.

>>89947380
The question is why not put the main setting/plot on his shoulders. And the rest on other writers?

>>89947975
Sure but it didnt felt bland and exchangable with other characters or properties. And this is the first issue that should set the tone. Like a trailer. This doesnt do anything for me. Wont buy it. Wildstorm is dead for me now.
>>
Pretty good, it should have been oversized and given us bigger action sequences.

As a Wildstorm fan it needs a little bit more techno and military jargon.

And they did a bad job with pacing and framing it felt like Engineer transfromed like 2 feet away from Craven, it shouldn't have taken Craven till the end of the issue to find out who she is.

I like the new Kraven, very Tony Stark esq but his entire sequence felt like shit talking co-workers instead of madman.

Bring on Helspont, Pike and Orb already
>>
Unironically really digging the completely sterile art, goes well with Ellis' inherent coldness, the conspiracies and the modern minimalist pastel chic look.
>>
>>89948597
yeah, i hear you. it wasn't stellar by any means. modern day Ellis reads like he doesn't put forth much effort anymore. plus 24 issues is really a stretch, so expect plenty of decompression. not to mention the art was kinda bad, like spin-off bad. they should have gotten a big name, or at least a competent artist for the launch.
>>
>>89948597
>Look the cafe, the introductions, the action scenes.
>Change it with GI Joe character or put somewhere a transformers. bang you got a cinematic universe thing.
>The panels and their design reminds me of movies.

I think that's the thing, even long before the TF and GI Joe films you mention, Ellis was already looking into making comics more like movies and wanted to eschew the standard comic storytelling at the time in favor of that.

Also I assume this was done to distinguish it from Wildstorm characters already in the DCU or New Earth or whatever you want to call it.
>>
>>89948597
>N-N-NOT MUH!!!!
Seriously, you're pathetic.
>>
>>89949139

Enjoyed it. The art was the strangest. Was expecting 90s style WildStorm superhero art & design with widescreen movie style panels. It was instead quite straightforward modern tech-noir style with standard panelling.

The art isnt bad. A little bit stiff, a little bit puritan, but it transports the story and looks more realistic.
>spin-off
You nailed it. Feels more of an adaption of a crime tv series.
Not bad, but sure another artist would help.

>>89949235
Yes but than it was moviesque. But now its like an adaption of CSI the Comic. The panels are less movie but GI Joe movie.

>distinguish it from Wildstorm characters already in the DCU or New Earth
But going grim&gritty isnt what wildstorm was for me. So wildstorm is just a husk to sell his grim noir spy comic. Thats why i mean it seem sto me like you could change the characters or universe and nothing changed.

In light of other Ellis comics in the last 15 years that doesn't really surprise me. He seems to do a lot of procedural stuff (Gravel, that Simon Spector comic for Apparat, Moon Knight, Fell, and I'm pretty sure there's others)

Honestly over the top edge wasn't that prevalent in Ellis' stuff. It was mostly Millar/Casey. Ellis' stuff was more of heroes being stylish and cool then anything. Which I think will be here as well considering that's a default Ellis writing trait.

yeah, Ellis does have some good work worth reading for indies in his catalog. Orbiter, Ignition City, and Fell among them. but these days he's known more for his recent Marvel runs and all the series he's dropped. the novels aren't even worth mentioning.
>>
>>89955739
I actually think you're right, but there's no way he waits till the end, it's way to obvious. Probably a reveal next issue.
>>
>>89945787
I'm thinking it's either a combat form or due to the system not fully being integrated yet, she's not revealing her final form.
>>
so is this a relaunch of the entire Wildstorm line-up or mainly Wild CATS and Stormwatch?

Thinking about downloading some of the older stuff
>>
>>89955816
i'm hoping it's just, ahem, a red herring because it's so blatantly obvious if so. i mean, really? rip-off one of the most famous comics of all time? oh wait, it's an homage... barf.
>>
>>89948789
Agreed.

Enjoyed it, would enjoy more.
Adding it to pull list.

Thanks for the story time op.
>>
>>89955212
To be honest Ellis already had "got you family" on that years ago.
>>
>>89955739
Seems totally possible. Grifter looks quite slight even.
>>
>>89945259
>The endless bad dream I have instead of a real life.
Really?
>>
>>89945428
>>89945455
The sequence is cool but the design is shit.
>>
>>89955940
If this is the only time we see him before he's shown to be Grifter, I wouldn't even compare it. Rorschach was prominently shown over and over throughout the series so it was kind of a big reveal, this guy was seen once in passing so I would call it more of a tease of what's to come.
>>
>>89952427
he only disowned because the editor would rewrite scenes for content, lord knows how edgy it really was, he probably had Bliss and Threshold outright banging on panel.
>>
>>89945799
Thanks OP

As someone who has never read anything Wildstorm, I really enjoyed this.
>>
>>89956121
I have to agree. The panel layout, color pallet, and framing were great. The problem occurs when you see The Engineer in full armor. It doesn't have good character design. It's too messy and haphazard. The suit design needs some aesthetic streamlining. Being big and bulky in the modern era is associated with antiquated, poorly utilized tech. New technology is smaller and more streamlined.
>>
>>89955919
entire line up, but I don't know if we're going to see Gen 13/DV8 as Team 7 members we've seen so far has been very young.
>>
>>89956545
true, but at the same time we saw Engineer beg for more money, let's hope this is her Mark I and there is a another suit on the drawing board.
>>
>>89956545
The way the face melt happens is offputting too. Really have to contrast it with Clean Room, which had mostly awesome looking demons and lately this insane fucked-up face devil worshiper who all looked great. But that doesn't translate to the face of the Engineer, here.

Zealot OTOH is a pretty perfect pick-up for that kind of style. Her expressions here are basically Astrid's in Clean Room, and that just works for the char.
>>
Can someone sell me in on the whole Wildstorm thing?
I've read some of it and I seriously don't get it.
>>
>>89957116
Edgy tacticool capeshit.
>>
>>89957150
Is that it? Because that's exactly what put me off when reading it.
Should've make it Shaman and Friends instead 2 be aich.
>>
>>89947246
That's kind of disappointing. I don't have any experience with the Wildstorm characters, but I really enjoyed the paneling and pacing of this issue. Finding out that the creative teams are going to be broken up kills the mood a bit.
>>
>>89957727
well the Wild Storm book itself is supposed to be 24 issues, then it'll be relaunched with Ellis still on it

There'll be three more books launched over the next two years so they won't be rushing out shitty spinoffs, it's all planned

They haven't said if Ellis is writing those himself or if other creators will get a crack at them
>>
>>89957608
What of the WS universe have you read?
>>
>>89957116
Make a universe that is more "real" and add several first person shooter setting which you can make in a possible cinematic universe with several characters that were rather well known to sell better than complettly new charaters.
>>
>>89955198
shit design
>>89955255
I'm lovin it
>>
>>89958438
I read that one arc with some suspicious cyborg guy that was actually pretty level headed where some guy from the future just appears and sits next to a door while the government, I think, kidnapped their Hawkgirl expy.

I've tried other arcs but I just can't give a shit about any of the characters except for that shaman dude, and his stories are always cut off by the other characters I don't care about.
>>
>>89959776
Authority? I really have no idea what you're talking about.
>>
>>89960238
Fuck. Yeah, I think that was.
Why do I keep mixing them up?
>>
>>89960475
I'd say try Planetary if you haven't already. It's standalone and much more streamlined than Stormwatch/Authority or other WS stuff.
>>
>>89960562
I did, it was fun.
No idea where the FUCKING MASTERPIECE reviews come from, though.
>>
>>89947145
The 90s are over guys.
>>
Thank you OP.
I wanted to check this out today.
>>
>>89945312
That a Batman shoutout?
>>
>>89960700
yes
>>
>>89960616
Just guessing, but I think it's because it did multiverse wankery and mystical gobbledygook before Morrison popularized it.
>>
>>89956545
I think the real problem with Engineer's design is that it looks like a Predator knockoff. You can do bulky or even messy designs, but it should at least be unique.
>>
>>89945970

you see the numbers on the top of the main cover?
hes contractually obligated to 24 issues of this book, and is overseeing the production of the other ones that will round out the new WILDSTORM.

Michael Cray (Deathblow) is the next book

Eh. Qualia the Purple was the only time I liked multiverse shit in general, it mystifies me how popular the concept is.

Thank you

Thanks poster.

I never paid attention to Wildstorm before. What exactly was it? Was it a shared universe thing or just various unconnected book published by the same company? And what does it have to do with DC?
>>
>>89963409
Wildstorm was an independent comic publisher who eventually got bought out by DC. They had quite a few teams who worked in the same general world. DC brought them into the DCU during the New52 years, but this was mostly a disaster.
This is the start of a completely new universe not connected to the mainline DCU
>>
>>89963409
>Was it a shared universe thing or just various unconnected book published by the same company?

Both but the Wildstorm people have nostalgia for and refer to as Wildstorm is a shared superhero universe with a mix of 2000s edge and tacticool black ops shit that produced some really great comics.

They published some independent stuff such as Ex Machina but no one really considers them "Wildstorm" comics and I wouldn't expect to see them in this series.
>>
>>89945234
That's a clever reference to Zealot's facial markings.
>>
>>89945152
Will midnight appear in this
>>
>>89947975
>The Authority arc was damn near movies on a page.

That was the mission statement and why Hitch did so much widescreen layouts.
>>
>>89964089
Yeah but he and Apollo may be different in this universe
>>
Is Ladytron gonna be in this? All I care about.

She better not have some garbage pretty redesign.
>>
>>89966896

This. Why alter perfection?
>>
Any suggestions on where to start with reading Wildstorm stuff?
>>
>>89967344
Moore and Joe Casey's Wildcats. Ellis' Stormwatch, Authority and Planetary.
>>
>>89967344
Don't, it's mostly crap.
>>
Really fascinated to see how Gen 13 will mesh with this vibe.
>>

anyone care to provide brief annotations or a quick rundown of all the Wildstorm references here? are the clean up crew a part of an old book? what's the deal with the Wetworks guy? any references i and others may have missed? just a thought.
>>
Can we also have Graymiotti back?

Planetary was fun but messed up.
>>
>>89972209
WGBS is also another reference.

>>
>>89960562
Planetary was how I got into Wildstorm, can second this rec.
>>
>>89960784
Planetary was out during the tail-end of a decade that had stuff like the X-Files and all that, plus Planetary's look into analogues to established things makes it a very lived-in universe. Doc Savage and pulp heroes, Godzilla, a Hong Kong film-esque take on The Spectre, Lone Ranger and a character who's a mix of the Green Hornet and Shadow, 50's B-Movies, Steranko's Nick Fury with the James Bond parts even more obvious, Vertigo, etc. all in the same place.

>>89960784
It isn't as heavy in multiversal stuff as you'd think. The first issue definitely deals with the Snowflake and an invasion from a parallel world JLA, And then things like the carrier and The Bleed were already established in Authority anyway.
>>
>>89967946
Will there be Gen? Last time we saw them they got Lobdell'd in n52 TT and it was dire
Lowkey want a TT vs Gen13 Rebirth though
