The whole problem with minority characters being so irrelevant and so much less popular than their iconic white counterparts in the first place is because these comics were (mostly) created way back when, when the only media in the mainstream in the west was white entertainment, which was created for a predominantly white audience. It wasn't even really thinkable for black characters, or other minority characters, barring some Yellow Peril stereotypes, to crack the mainstream. Think of all the biggest 20th century pop culture icons. Pulp heroes like John Carter of Mars, Doc Savage, The Shadow, superheroes like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, and so on. All of those motherfuckers were white. And these characters were given radio shows, tv shows, cartoons, etc., which only solidified their positions as pop culture juggernauts in the mainstream. Meanwhile, black characters were either ignored (if they even existed) or were hardly even being created. White characters essentially had a massive head start, to the point where misguided suits and creators are trying to play catch up by turning some of these characters into another race.
