I like that Princess Bubblegum is always acutely aware of the fragility of her race and the need to protect and expand it. Its a hilarious vicious cycle. She smothers and micromanages the candy people, to the point where they can't survive without her.

In turn, she uses that as an excuse to never leave them, thus perpetuating the cycle.
The end of her story arc is foreshadowed both in one of the 5 short grables episodes, and the astral projecting episode. Shes going to end up permanently sacrificing herself for the continuation of her kingdom.

The ice king also has some remarkable simularities to magic man/normal man, so there's that connection as well
