I read Jimmy Corrigan recently and am inclined to agree
>>
>>89911205

yes he is. by far. there's a richness of feeling you get from reading his stuff that you only also get from reading classic novels. no other comic or comix or cartoon makes me feel this way.
>>
Building stories really is a treat. I was lucky enough to receive it as a gift and I'll still go back through it in a different order every so often even though I've read through each piece numerous times

only Noah Van Sciver can really compare IMO

I think as faar as composition goes he truly is the master of his craft.

In terms of content he's pretty typical and I dont find a lot of the stuff he writes about interesting as much as how he presents it.

I loathe how he pretty much popularized and cemented this resurgence of utterly minimalist art in advertising, like so minimal there's little to no room for personal expression to shine through these simplistic abstractions made into simple geometry people. I really just can't get behind it and I think it's an inherently uncreatove and uninspired artstyle despite any visual clarity it provides.

So yeah, breddy good, but not a fan.

This is really cool conceptually, but comes off as a hassle to read. Like its cool that he can make pages that are so dense in information, but his flow suffers for it. Also using arrows to point the reader where to look next is actually fucking horrible. If you need them it means that you just have an ass layout.
>>
>>89911205
No, pretty hackish as with all the Fantagraphics sacred monsters, but he's lowkey the most influential on mainstream culture.
>>
>>89911737
>Noah Van Sciver
Ripping off the most pedestrian parts of Eightball, with no style, message or humor, Noah has no technical abilty, no vision and ultimately no creative drive. He's as bad as they come.

He began in the 20th, but yeah, he's one of them.

He had this early book, Floyd Farland: Citizen of the Future, published in Eclipse many years ago. Will they ever reprint it?

This. I like Ware well enough but there's nothing talented or ground-breaking about making layouts which are a pain to follow. When I see people praising that aspect of his work it reminds me of a lot of people who heap praise on incomprehensible modern art just because they think "different" must equal "better".

Back to capes then.

I read about 40 pages of Jimmy Corrigan before I had to leave and I just haven't had the interest to continue it since. It was pretty bad. Adrian Tomine and Nate Powell are better.
>>
>>89915657
Oh fuck off you insufferable elitist. I like plenty of indie comics, just this one aspect of Ware's work bugs me.

His layouts are really fun and composition and timing are hard to match. The minimalism irks people sometimes but he pro at that too.
Pretty sure Ware's comics saved my life around the year 2000. I had been gifted his entire published collection up to that point by a fellow sad frustrated artist living in LA. He said, 'Take these, I just can't read them anymore.' His hope for himself was lost but he gave me what he had left for the future.

Guy got robbed, felt so bad for the robber that he gave him $20? That's called being robbed.
>>
I love Chris Ware's stuff. It always strikes me how honest and real his characters are, how innately selfish they are, the little absurd, self centered fantasies they'll all indulge in, even if they're outwardly okay people.

It means the same as this.
>>
His works have poor page composition and are borderline unreadable, but have a very crafty and aesthetically pleasing style

So all in all, he's a great artist but a bad comic artist
>>
>>89915987
Thanks!
>>
Typical uselessness of people his age. Total loss of practicality in the face of this perceived meaningless in their lives, which are perfectly comfortable from every perspective but their own.
Remember kiddies, the inevitable heat death of the universe is coming, and nothing you do will ever matter, but you should still do your fucking laundry.
>>
>>89911205
Ware has his strengths, he is groundbreaking in many ways. But his comics don't feel fluid, his layouts are complex but they have no sense of motion. His comics don't direct the eye naturally, you have to force yourself to where you need to go.
>>
Has the new Acme Novelty Library been released yet? Last I remember Lint was out in 2010 and Building Stories was out in 2012.
>>
>>89922118
He did The Last Saturday in 2015 and some short comics/covers after that.
