I've seen more than a few threads tackle the subject of how Raven could work as a stand alone character (that is, not a part of a team), and the main issue most people agree on is that she's got one story (Trigon) and that's it.

Having her do magical adventures in the DC verse isn't a new concept on /co/, but DC sure as hell hasn't done it yet.

Let her keep some of the best aspects of her cartoon interpretation (character design, personality), and I think she could carry a book.

I had a similar idea for a thing on [as]. About Raven just kicking around the DCU, generally getting involved in the weirder ends of it, along with her besties and ties to more mundane DC stuff and lovers Beast Boy and Ravager. Would stylistically draw a lot from Hellboy, Hellsing, Vampire Hunter D, and Bayonetta.

Other things my autism has applied to it:

I think it'd be interesting if it starts out innocent. They cross paths (classic teamup style), Billy is just Billy. Raven finds him weirdly (maybe even annoyingly) chipper, but is impressed by his raw magical power. Billy thinks Raven seems a bit gloomy but good-hearted and so he offers some unexpected but ultimately appreciated encouragement and validation.

Raven keeps him in mind as a result, maybe even seeking him out when a matter arises where a big magical punchy guy would be helpful, and as a result of teamup 2 discovers that this weird adult is actually just a super-earnest kid. After they swap backstories they decide that they could maybe help each other out. Raven can help teach Billy more about magic and fill in gaps that The Wizard hasn't seen fit to inform him about, and Billy is a useful guy to know, as he punches way above Raven's weightclass, despite lacking her versatility.

And from there odd friendship something more might blossom.

As far as villains go, all you need is take some of the less used magical beings in the DCU.

Why not introduce Malchior in the comics? All-powerful evil dragon warlock trapped inside a book that needs to trick Raven into freeing him.

Gentleman Ghost could provide some interesting old-school superheroing stories, and he's been passed around so many heroes already, Hawkman wouldn't mind lending him to Raven's gallery.

And as far as bigger world-ending villains go (maybe even bigger than Trigon), have Johnny Sorrow and the King of Tear as the Nyarlathotep/Azathoth duo for some serious shit to befall Raven's life, and the entire universe at large.

I used to be like that, as the show was my first introduction to the Titans.

Some time later I managed to read parts of the original NTT's run, and I genuinely liked Starfire and Raven in there as well.

Sadly though, my interest in the characters kind of stopped afterwards. Starfire's had her ups mostly, but some pretty bad downs in term of her character.

Raven was the worst afflicted, however. In what I can only assume to be an attempt to follow on the show's coattails, they tried very hard to make Raven into a sassy young girl, which continues to this day, and it simply doesn't work. They try very hard to catch the cartoon Raven's style and attitude, but end up just making the whole thing feel very forced at best, and very "greeting, fellow young people" at worst.

In either case, it doesn't make Raven that interesting of a character, not helped by her stories almost always revolving around Trigon in some form or another.

Or worse, Beast Boy.

I agree with pretty much all of this,although my experience of it was the other way 'round. I read the comics as they came out and caught the show when it came on years later. I think there's a lot that could be done with Raven as a character, but no one seems to have any inspiration to do anything beyond rehashing the Trigon stuff over and over. Oh, she does other stuff, but it always seems weak and lame and half hearted.

As for Beast Boy, I kind of get it in that his character was one of the most inspired deviations from the comics and his friendship with Raven in particular was often compelling, but like so many of the good elements of the show it is very difficult to divorce from that specific context. This is particularly true in Gar's case. I don't think I have ever seen Changeling written in the comics remotely the way he came across in the show, even when they try to. And the truth is that they probably shouldn't.

Beast Boy will always be the most divisive character for me, on anything Titans related.

I absolutely loathed him in the show, I'm not gonna lie, and that interpretation of him has basically given me a disdain for any version I've ever read of him.

It's not that I can't enjoy a good Changeling/Beast Boy, he was just fine in NTT, but more often than not I find myself really disliking anything he's involved in.

This is ESPECIALLY true when that certain thing is Raven. The fact that this is the single most popular ship for her is beyond me, especially since it pretty much came from the show itself where they simply had no chemistry together. I can understand a good "opposites attract" story, but if that's the case, Starfire is the best example of Raven's opposite.

Whatever the case, I really can't quite say what it was about the cartoon's interpretation of Raven that made her so likeable. I genuinely disliked the show as a whole, and could skip the vast majority of it and only focus on Raven-centric episodes (with the exception of season four, because that whole arc was abysmal), and that's all I'd really need.

Maybe it was just the stories around her. Maybe it was the cast she had to bounce off of. I honestly don't know, but what exactly makes her version of "snarky dark chick" any different from the majority of others is very difficult to pinpoint.

Raven is probably more like Asuka than Rei. I mean, sure, both Rei and Raven are depressed, but that's really where the similarities end. Raven is surely and confrontational with others, responding with snark and threats, whereas Rei is basically just completely stoic. Raven is proud of her abilities and takes her role seriously, Rei floats through life not really caring about anything and with no sense of self or worth. Raven pushes others away due to past trauma and creates a protective shell of superiority, while in truth desiring and needing human contact, even envying others for being better at it, whereas Rei simply removes herself entirely from life and does not desire a place among other people, finding it utterly impossible to relate with them.

Raven is the Asuka. There is no Rei in TT.

I personally always liked to picture Raven and Superman in some kind of student/teacher relationship, with Superman taking Raven under his wing after seeing how much she wanted to be a good person and distance herself from her demonic heritage. Nothing serious ever springing up between the two (because Clark/Lois will always be my OTP), maybe a crush on Raven's side of things towards Superman, but that would be it.

Billy and Raven is interesting to me because it's basically the exact same scenario, just with the student/teacher roles reversed. It's one I never seriously considered before, but I could actually see the whole "Raven tries to teach Billy the mysteries of magic; Billy gets through all of Raven's defenses just by being so gosh darn nice" thing playing out.

I honestly wasn't impressed by anything I saw with the two. I've pointed out to moments, sure, episodes, interactions, etc. But every time, all I ever got out of the two was "BB makes a joke, Raven grunts at it". That's it.

Original characters would be the best way to go.

A solo series should be about setting characters aside their respective universe, and create their own.

You can rely on some D or C list characters, definitely, and give them some time in the spotlight, especially older villains who'd just be seen as jokes in more established books.

But original stuff is the way to go if you want to firmly establish a mythos. As much as I wasn't impressed by it, I give the Starfire solo props in this regard by trying to introduce a bunch of new characters for Starfire to work with.

This is the thing with Raven: she might look like a very limited character, but you just need to dig a little to find some interesting directions to take her in.

Personally Superman I agree is more a nurturing teacher type... he would take someone who struggles with her heritage and teach her to work with/around it, be a shoulder for her to cling to when shit goes bad. That's adorable. I was kind of against the idea of working Superman in there because he doesn't fit her sphere of interest (magic), and he can easily overshadow her, but your ideas are undeniably cute.

But yeah, so, cobbled together from this and several other threads about how to do a Raven ongoing:

Keep her backstory the same, including her forming the New Teen Titans for the purpose of defeating Trigon. After he is successfully defeated, Raven retires from the team and tries to live a normal life, which means integrating into earth society. Since she was raised in Azarath (which is now gone, thanks dad), its more challenging than she might initially anticipate, and if Trigon's emergence/defeat was timed around her being 15-16 she would still be in that awkward teenage range. Possible to borrow the idea of Raven's aunt's family from the recent mini-series. One thing to emphasize, Trigon has been definitively thwarted. Raven straight up cannot be used as a means to enter this dimension. Now while there might be those (Brother Blood, whatevs) who might want to find alternate ways of bringing him over, its not a constant looming threat that dominates Raven's life anymore.

Retirement doesn't go smoothly though, and inevitably, she gets tangled up in other mystic nonsense. Just low tier stuff that she is vastly overqualified to handle, but it leads to her delving into the magic scene of the DC universe, who she is also a foreigner to. Keep the stakes relatively low, occasional team ups with other magic figures, and build a rogue's gallery for her, from C/D listers and original enemies. Also build up a supporting cast, of both previously existing and new characters, both normies and magical.

And Raven x Billy, cause its super cute.
