Still one of the best superman moments ever written. This mini still hits me. All the power of Shazam and Billy sitting on top of everest in tears. Winnick fucking nails the characterisations in this story. It really is fantastic.

Not him but he's right, it's edgy because that was Johns and Johns likes establishing someone as serious via judicious use of shock value gore i.e. Black Adam pushing Psycho-Pirate's mask through his head or Joker graphically burning off Alexander Luthor's face with acid, everything with Superboy-Prime, basically the entirety of Infinite Crisis in general. Or most of Blackest Night, especially Gehenna's death.

The scene could've just as easily worked with Manta flipping out but not actually killing the people, running off and then coming up out of the water but Johns just cannot help himself because he just has to establish that Manta is dangerous and the only way he knows how to do that is by having him graphically murder a shop full of people with blood and dead bodies all over the place.

Take the villain, give him all the common-sense "what you should have done", and have him fail horribly because fate is treating him like he's Spiderman. I thought Superior was vastly underrated. Yeah there was some stupid shit, but welcome to comics; it was all just to set up a story that ultimately did justice to the characters of Doc Ock and Spidey. I always saw it as being a story about what makes Spider-Man Spider-Man, told through the lense of his oldest nemesis slowly figuring it out.

His characterisation in that run made him one of my favourite villains. A joke, a loser, a one-trick pony, and just generally unpleasant. But laugh at him and he won't forget, and there's no-one more spiteful who'll stoop lower to get payback. And if you're not ready for his one trick it'll kill you.

Will his small apperace in JLU do?

There have been a number of versions of him. From the goofy with boomerang powers to some bad ass ex-special forces goon who sometimes uses a boomerang.

I really want to see a mix of those. Something like him starting as normal bad ass ex-military questionable morals, that got boomerang powers. And with that new power he found things just got too easy so he went full villein looking for real thrills and challenges. You know, not a true evil, just doesn't give a damn about others. That how i'd like to see him. And keep that old school hat, not many can wears them right anymore.

I'd go with less 'Thrills and challenges' and more 'It's how you make a name'. A lot of Flash's villains are in it for cash and publicity a lot of the time. No one respects 'Dude with an assault rifle and no theme', that's how you get thought of as a bit player and a a goon. Some showmanship gets your name out there, gets you hired for the big jobs with the big dosh.

But then, I'm a Shadowrun player so I'm a bit of a sucker for some weird gimmicks in an otherwise very competent person. The two terms that get tossed about in that game are Black Trenchcoat (Operators Operating Operationally) and Pink Mohawk (Crash the APC through the front door have the troll with face tattoos head out with a minigun.). Between them is what I concider my golden point for both that game and Comics. Pink Trenchcoat. Yes, that man has a boomerang grenade. That doesn't make him any less of a scary, competent guy when he's on point.

And yeah, his JLU appearance is great. I mean, that hat is great and it's got style and class. That's the sort of guy I'd call 'Captain Boomerang' not 'Boomerang Man'
