>What is minus?
Minus is an ancient webcomic, running from 2006-2008. It's about the escapades a young girl with the power of total omnipotence.
>Where can I read it?
Unfortunately the original website is long dead, but you can still find it on wayback:
https://web.archive.org/web/20141012212509/http://www.kiwisbybeat.com/minus1.html
>Why should I read it?
It's a unique experience that you need to see for yourself to understand. Often weird, sometimes wonderful, but always funny.
It's 132 pages long, and I'm going to dump as many as I can. Get ready for a long haul.
>OP lacks a pass
Well, this could have been better thought out. I guess we're in for a *really* long haul.
Wait are u posting all the strips?
>>89838173
>Wait are u posting all the strips?
They aren't up online anymore (outside the archive), so I intend to.
Maybe If I get tired, I can skip some and just post my favorites...
Mostly, I just want to share this to people who never got the chance to see it.
Going to take a break for now, if you want you can make this into a generic "Old webcomics" thread.
Thanks for this, OP. Cute comic.
Shit, I remember seeing bits and pieces of this comic back in the day.
It really is absurdly charming.

And one extra, because it's fitting.
>>89837956
I remember reading this comic once. Pretty good. A shame the website is dead, i feel this deserves to be archived somewhere.
Btw, does anybody know what else the artist did/is doing?
Reading all of these, I just can't help but feel like Minus is a bitch, not likable at all except for maybe one or two occasions.

god this is so unsettling
i'm surprised I never heard about this webcomic before. thanks for the find mate
>>89841856
This was the first one I saw, and what got me interested in the comic.
I recall someone else though, saying they preferred it when they first saw it, because it was also their first Minus comic, and they liked it better not knowing what Minus could do, because it just seemed like a little girl trying to stop a meteor with a baseball bat
Apparently the artist Ryan Armand had pretty much vanished off the face of the earth. He was still replying to emails and ran a Facebook page as of 2015. But since then nothing. Apparently someone looked up his address and the house was abandoned.

If I had to guess, I'd say you're one of those people who can't watch a sad movie, or even a melancholy one. It's alright for things to make you feel things other than "happy." Diversify your emotions a little.
>>89852100
>I'd say you're one of those people who can't watch a sad movie, or even a melancholy one. It's alright for things to make you feel things other than "happy." Diversify your emotions a little.
Where the hell did you get that from?
They just told you they don't like it because the whole comic is whimsical and nonchalant with Minus' horrible behavior and actions, nothing more and nothing less. I can definitely see how the contrast can turn people off, but if you can't see how something like that would creep people out, maybe you should think a little yourself.
>>89852430
The problem comes in that you think the comic is glorifying her actions and isn't just like some kind of documentary where we just watch things unfold. It's interesting. It's not gross or anything.
It probably bothers you because all kids are cruel and don't really know it. Minus isn't a monster more than any other child. She just has incredible powers and no appreciation of their consequences. As pompous as it sounds to say out loud, it's kind of an introspective on being young.
>>89852567

It is because people have empathy for other humans, so showing other humans as victims of Minus is unpleasant.

>>89858316
Empathy is learned, and minus is a child. You want to demonize her actions so you can feel better about yourself, but the truth is that's how young kids are.
Look at how you just categorized me different from yourself. Does it help you cope?

Minus may be a child but artist is clearly not. He could easily created a less douchey character than this little shitstain. Of course, that's his comic and he can do whatever he pleases, but I just want to justify that "minus is a child" atgument of yours is retarded.
>>89862858
Authors can't create douchey characters now?
The whole point of the comic is to watch the escapades of a god-like character who doesn't grasp the gravity of their actions.
Wow, this is a gem. Thanks for sharing.
>>89843529
Minus was a girl to start as far as I recall? She just looked like a boy, maybe?
I mean even trans people can't tell until they hit puberty usually, in spite of what libtards will shill at you. No little boy would be upset at being called a boy.

This one actually has some backstory to it. If I remember the author's original notes, his idea was that maybe some street magician whom minus gave real magic powers wanted revenge or something and so gave minus bad dreams.
>>89869936
The whole point of this was to, again, give the red-haired ponytail girl a chance to show off her skills.
(Just fyi, this girl is different from the two who were sent back in time and afterwards never seen again. Unless there was a cameo of them as senior citizens that I missed.)
>>89870002
And another Larry character stemming from that last one.
>>89869936
You remember correctly.
>I had an idea for a comic where minus shows up some street magician so he gets angry and tries to attack her in her dreams(maybe minus gave him real powers while screwing around in the past, I didn't really think it through) and the resulting nightmares could lead to monsters in the real world... monsters that could be beaten up with sticks. Except by the time I got to actually drawing the comics the entire original idea was scrapped, so it ended up just being stuff popping out of minus's dream for no reason

>>89869716
>so, are those "humans.""... not alive?
I think this series was an older attempt; back then minus was definitely more of a jerk and less of a childlike "doesn't know any better" figure.
>>89870272
There have always been man-haters or self-hating men who think their gender has anything to do with everyone being jerks.
>>89870305
>so, are those "humans.""... not alive?
No idea. Honestly, I think by this point minus has screwed up the definition of "life" on a cosmic scale, anyways.
>>89870361
I think it's self-parody actually. He's trying to do an old-timey riff on his own work.
I don't really like this series that much. So I'm not goint to post any more other than the predecessor of the one that everyone seems to like for the "wrong" reasons.

>I think it's self-parody actually. He's trying to do an old-timey riff on his own work.

I never really liked how the comic ended with an apocalypse and "the most intelligent people who ever lived" being ok with it. It feels so wrong.
Thanks for the storytime pal, this brings me memories of my college years and how I checked the site every day.
>>89873266
Given that they all suffered through the apocalypse, and could reason how difficult it would be to get minus to do any resurrecting without unintended consequences, it's not unreasonable to conclude the risk isn't worth the reward. Besides, a majority of them have been dead for centuries anyhow. They probably made their peace with the afterlife.Though they should've brought back a woman for Larry to play Adam & Eve with
>>89873266
>I never really liked how the comic ended with an apocalypse and "the most intelligent people who ever lived" being ok with it. It feels so wrong.
Well, it's not like it really matters in the end if the afterlife is exactly like normal life.
It's a bit less bittersweet when you think that minus could put things back the way they were at any time. You could see it all as a learning experience for minus, teaching her some responsibility.
>>89867894
Another reality warper?
>>89873266
I would've assumed that the smartest people ever to live just decided that the process of deciding just who to revive was not really worth the hassle, and that anyone revived would just be subjected to a rather painful living process before ending up in the same position. Between that, and people reviving just to painfully die immediately (intensive care, starving, bleeding to dead at that point), and asking Minus to do anything resulting in some rather negative consequences, they probably decided that things were good enough as they currently were.
>>89841874
That's fucked jeez
>>89873372
>You could see it all as a learning experience for minus, teaching her some responsibility.
I feel like that'll never happen.
The only voice of opposition that really affects Minus is her friend, and even then she doesn't really call out Minus.
With everybody else silent because of the chance of something awful happening if you talk back, Minus would probably stay childlike forever.
>>89873978
>With everybody else silent because of the chance of something awful happening if you talk back, Minus would probably stay childlike forever.
Yes, it's slow without someone calling her out on poor behavior, but she doesn't need someone to tell her she's hurt when something she did comes back to bite her.
>>89873372
>the afterlife is exactly like normal life.
Thats whats bothering me, that everything is the same. Even there are people being born, like it was hinted in the last comics. Only difference is that there is no death, because they are all dead already.
Also I like how even after the end of the world, minus still obeys her mother.
>>89873653
They can just ask minus to return everything like it was before the apocalypse. She did that when she brought the star to her friend, omnipotence is always on the table.

>They can just ask minus to return everything like it was before the apocalypse. She did that when she brought the star to her friend, omnipotence is always on the table.

Thanks for storytiming this, I read minus back when it was still up, but never got around to anything else on the site.

I'm positive those two kids are a reference to some old school manga, but damned if I can remember what it's called.

They would have to get her before she creates the spirit world, because minus still holds terrifying omnipotent power after death.
>>89883889
But ghosts existed before that >>89840364
>>89883889
Nah, the Foundation is smart enough to not try to kill her, or in fact make their existence known to her in any way. They'd be more likely to plant an agent near her, like that green-haired girl, to monitor and perhaps steer her actions.
They might even try introducing her to some of the scarier Keter-class SCPs in hopes that she might render them less dangerous. If she fails, well... As long as the SCP can't assimilate her power, it's a win-win.
So... Anyone plan to continue this with another storytime tomorrow?
>>89884373
Are you kidding? They would absolutely try to contain or capture her. They've basically already got their own minus already.
http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-239
>>89851859
I don't like it either, but not for the reasons you mentioned. I just thought it was boring and overall uninteresting and I never understood why people liked it so much.
>>89850364
OH.
>>89884666
Satan would hate minus.
>>89877318
>Minus minus Minus
Fund it!
>>89884601
Thats only because they raised her from birth.
Try convincing a godlike little girl why it would be a good idea to accompany you to a secret facility full of monstrosities.
They would have to use other SCP's to try and contain her at first, and then attempt to put her into a dreamless coma like 239.

I love pelen purul
It reminds me a lot of aurora, but with less misfortune.
> See a Minus thread on /co/
> Oh man, some many memories
> Kiwis by Beat is gone with no trace
> tfw you'll never see the end of Modern Fried Snake
I should never have stopped reading. Why did I stop. I figured a 2 year break would make up a good buffer to come back to.
>>89885373
Same. The author is fucking dead and we'll never get any more of any of this. So many webcomics dropping like flies these days. Here one day and then gone forever the next.
>>89838371
How awesome would it be to be able to play ant Civ.
>>89885373
>Modern Fried Snake
At least most of it's been recovered now. Fist was my favorite story of his, and nobody's turned up more than the first two parts.
This webcomic was kind of disturbing sometimes.
>>89844518
Can't be, the other girl isn't dressed as if in the past.
>>89884934
They would just build a containment center around her domicile without her knowing. Break into her house and ice her while she's sleeping or something.
>>89841856
So this isn't supposed to be inspirational? Just funny? Before I knew about the series and its context I found it really inspirational.
I love this guys style.

>Begging for change somewhere on the streets in California.
It disturbs me that this may well be true, Ryan Armand should be as well known as Bill Watterson and instead all he has is a mirror site and an occasional /co thread while being MIA
He used to be on SA, do any goons know anything about him?
>>89887067

Holy shit I love this, I never read it before. It's like Nausicaa shifted through Armand's lens, she's whimsical and resourceful but she's also got a mean streak a mile wide (To be fair, Nausicaa did too, but I love how unexpectedly mean Armand's characters can be)

this comci is great!

It's really disturbing, but yes.
Either nothing happens when we die and she brought everyone back to "life" as a ghost, or the afterlife exists and she ripped them out of it for what she assumed the afterlife is.

The way the artist just disappeared is kind of creepy, especially considering how messed up his work can be.
It almost makes me wonder if he committed suicide. Or maybe he disowned all of his work for some personal reason. Or maybe he never existed in the first place, and all of his work is just a strange anomaly in our universe.
Or maybe he's fine, and he just stopped making webcomics. Perhaps he's doing other things online. He could even be doing stuff on this very website. Hell, he might even be posting on this thread.
>>89882819
Danm. That was certainly something. I have to say, i really like this artists charming yet fucked up style. I might check out some of his other work now.
>>89890134
[insert joke about religion here.]
>>89890272
>>89845992
It's weird how people can just disappear like that from the face of the internet, like the VA of Shima from Planet Dolan or Tord from Eddsworld
>>89869716
This ending always makes me sad. Despite, or perhaps because, of the fact that it can all be undone in a instant by our main character.

>>89890272
I think it's more likely he had an accident and died that way. Now that I look at his tumblr the title is "comics that don't exist". I don't remember if that was the title before he disappeared or not. If he changed it that means he's still alive and just wanted to delete everything for some reason. Would really like to know if anyone remembered the title from before.
>>89895442
>I don't remember if that was the title before he disappeared or not
It was the title since he started the tumblr in 2012.
>>89895869
Damn. Well I guess he's probably dead. Why'd it have to be him?
>>89845200
You know the context kinda ruined that strip for me as well.
First i thought it was a little girl facing a fight she cannot possibly win.
Now.
I know it's just a supernatural jerk kid summoning a planet killer just so she can hit a homerun.
I think my life has lost something inspiring.
>>89895964
I don't think he's dead. My theory is that he's lying in wait, quietly doing new works, until he has enough done to make a new site. But he's not going to announce it to the world, or even acknowledge his previous work. He's just going to let things spread via word of mouth again, and see if anyone recognizes who he is.
>>89838002
So did he die when turned to the balloon, or when popped?Or is he still alive as shreds of rubber on the ground?
>>89890272
Ryan if you're reading this and homeless you can come live on my couch for free. I swear I won't rape you.
>>89899020
But where is your couch located, and what's the bus fare from california to there?
>>89898284
Why would he do that? He was updating right up until he disappeared.
>>89897848
You can watch FLCL for the same scenario but better
>>89901173
It just seems like the sort of thing he would do. Get to a point where he just wants to start over, like Mr. Phipps.
>>89902445
He's never done anything like this though
>>89902515
Switching from Ribald Youth to Kiwis by Beat was a form of starting over. Plus he always kept some comics hidden from public viewing. It doesn't seem too out of character to me.
>>89844310
And here we see how the other kids aren't notably better than minus. Despite the fact that she gave them a perfectly working potion to the less gifted students, they blame her for their failure to apply to the correct object.
>>89903359
Forgot to mention - and they react violently.
>>89887431
>Ryan Armand should be as well known as Bill Watterson
Fucking this. Armand is/was a rare gem of the medium.
>>89886729
That wouldn't work at all. She can die and come back as she pleases.
>>89900511
Philadelphia. Probably a lot of money.
>>89902763
I feel like you're trying to reach for any conclusion other than he's dead. Ribald Youth stayed up and he's never deleted everything before, especially not stuff that he was currently updating.
>>89904067
I have little concern that he's dead, I'm merely spitballing on what he's up to currently.People have contacted members of his family, and they made it clear he's alive. However, they wouldn't give any info about what he's up to.
>>89904260
>People have contacted members of his family, and they made it clear he's alive
Source right now
>>89844518
No? It's basically just a memory.
>>89903573
>She can die and come back as she pleases.
Worst-case scenario, she starts to take it as a game...
Actually, that would make a nice SCP in its own right.Might be too close to "Abel", though.
