So, with RessurXion happening in March and Secret Empire happening in May, does this mean what everyone has suspected will happen, happen? Is Marvel doing a Rebirth? Their sales are tanking and they're rigging the sales figures with free floppies.

Is Marvel going to try and get their shit together?

>What if your greatest ally was secretly your greatest enemy? Beginning May 3rd, prepare for Marvel Comics’ SECRET EMPIRE! Blockbuster creators Nick Spencer, Steve McNiven, Andrea Sorrentino and Leinil Yu are ready to challenge the entire Marvel Universe as they unite the Avengers, X-Men, Defenders, Champions, Inhumans, Spider-Man, and more, as an unwavering front against the SECRET EMPIRE!

>The Marvel Universe is under siege from within! Due to the manipulations of the Red Skull, Captain America, secretly a true believer in the cause of Hydra, uses the trust and respect he has gained over the years to a position where he can enacts Hydra’s ideals against the Marvel Universe and it’s up to all heroes to unite against one of the greatest challenges they have ever faced.

>Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso said, “SECRET EMPIRE is the rallying cry for all the heroes -- Avengers, Guardians, Defenders, X-Men, Spider-Man, Deadpool – to put aside their differences and unify in the defense of the Marvel Universe."

>That unification is what will be needed to confront Steve Rogers since all the heroes close to Cap have been be influenced by him over the years. SVP and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort said, "Our heroes will be tested both physically and morally against one of the most trusted heroes of all time and that's the aspect of this story our characters face and what forces them to come together."

>Forged together as one - the Avengers, the Champions, the Defenders, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Inhumans, the X-Men, and more will be tested as Hydra’s grip tightens around the Marvel Universe and SECRET EMPIRE unleashes a horde of villains against those who have sworn to protect the innocent. Be here as SECRET EMPIRE launches this May from Nick Spencer, Steve McNiven and Marvel Comics.

Marvel will miss the biggest appeal of rebirth and will put Bendis "I think the characters I don't like are shit" Bendis in charge.
>>
>>89836843
If the rumors are to be believed, not until 2018.

>>89836874
They're already ruining it by putting fucking Guggenheim in charge of the X-Men.
>>
>>89836843
Thing is, their X-Men lineup sucks balls. Right down to getting rid of Rachel Summer's awesome costume.
>>
They'll never do an actual reset of all their comics and I wouldn't want them to just erase the decades of history the characters have
>>
>>89836996
Rebirth isn't a reboot, quite the opposite in fact.
>>
>>89836996
I mean, resets always suck. They just retell the stuff you know, and characters you want to see always get altered when they show up, usually for the worst.
>>
>>89837031
Marvel won't do a reboot, but it looks like ResurrXion and Secret Empire and what comes after isa relaunch.

Also, isn't the movie and comics/tv-series divisions of Marvel now separate? If so, isn't it obvious that Marvel would like to put their X-titles in the spotlight since they have Legion and that other X-men tv-series coming up?
>>
I have to wonder which route Marvel would go to "roll back" Spider-Man: undoing OMD or heading all the way back to the 70's.

They like marketing the idea of CollegePeter, but the Whales want MJ.
>>
>>89837031
Readers like continuity, but only assholes want stories to be shackled to canon. We care when discrepencies arise from carelessness, but most don't like stories focused on explaining plotholes or redefining details and status quo.

That's why Byrne's Spidey Chapter One failed, but you'll be hard pressed to find haters for Busiek's Untold Tales.
>>
>>89836843
Even if ResurrXion is their attempt at going back to the "meat and potatoes" that people like, they're not going to win back many people by putting fucking Guggenheim on a flagship book.
>>
>>89836901
This, i was stoked when it was teased, totally underwhelmed w/ the teams and creatives

Christina Strain, the author, has never written a comic as far as I know. She was a COLORIST for series like “Runaways” and “S.H.I.E.L.D” then quit and got a degree in screenwriting and did some work on the first season of The Magicians on Syfy.

Someone claiming to be a "Marvel Insider" was spouting crap saying that Guggenheim and the guy writing the other X-Books are only seat fillers.

Supposedly Chris Yost is going to be the real "ResurreXion" but because he's busy doing animation work on Rebels, he wasn't going to be available in time for the relaunch of the line. So they hired Guggenheim as a glorified pinch hitter for the first arc and he's going off of Yost's notes, until Yost himself can start writing the books himself

I don't know why Marvel refuses to let Cullen Bunn write Rachel. He's a big fan of the character and has stated in several interviews he would like to use her. I realize Marc Guggenheim is also a Rachel fan, as he seems to have a habit of writing X-Men comics centering around Rachel, but in my opinion, Bunn is a better writer overall.

They're obviously leading up to a "heroes are acting like heroes again!" branding and have been for at least a year (so, before they knew the election results).

The comics for the last year are full of talk about how heroes are acting like assholes and they spend most of their time fighting each other. Obviously the next step is "heroes join together to fight the real menace, HYDRA-Cap."

And then they'll have a Heroic Age type thing going for another 6 months until Civil War 3.
>>
>>89840313
>not to mention logan and rigthclops are still kill

Then there is no real X-Men "rebirth"
>>
>>89840215
He doesn't. It's a board meme.
>>
>>89837830
The main problem with Chapter One was that there was no real reason to go back and "update" or pull a reboot on Spider-Man's past at that time. I could understand Byrne doing the Man of Steel miniseries for Superman because the DCU just changed its entire history. But there was nothing that would set up Spider-Man's history to be rebooted (at that point in time). Byrne got a reputation for being Mr. Fixit back in the 80's, but there's a reason there's a saying that goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

On top of that the comic was also getting ire because he outright said he was going to jettison Untold Tales from canon.
>>
>>89839789
>>Also the whole lineup of Gen X makes me so fucking mad. Why the fuck do they think that we want Quire or any of the Bendis X-Men back? The majority of comic fans don't and we don't want the O5 either. At the moment it's like Marvel is Skinner asking if he is so out of touch

"Now, Christina's moving into the X-Men franchise, and writing her first ongoing: Generation X. She was given a surprising amount of leeway — her editor Daniel Ketchum essentially said, “Come up with a concept and list of teen mutants you'd want for a relaunch of Generation X.”

If you want to blame anyone for the lineup of Gen X, place it almost solely on the writer.

>>
So is Marvel allowing writers to come up with new mutant characters again or what? If not, it's not really a resurrxion, is it?
>>
>>89838748
Of course you want, this is /co/.
>>
>>89841422
Until Marvel steers its top talent to the X-Men again instead of forcing it to make do with the likes of Guggenheim, we're not going to see any X-resurgence.

Like, I don't know if a Ta-Nehisi Coates X-men would suck. Probably it would suck. But it would get publicity, and obvously he would rather be doing that than Black Panther.

They could get lots of big name writers to do X-Men if they wanted, they just don't want to "waste" writers on a low-priority line.

These are all probably true, but what Marvel will REALLY miss by attempting to do their own Rebirth is the actual heart of DC Rebirth. It isn't about setting everything back to Square One in the universe and hoping for the best, it's about finding what readers love about the characters, what characters are loved or desired the most, and what writers work the best in whatever genre they're given.

It's not just about the DC Universe, but about the entire DC fanbase. It's not just about fixing mistakes, but learning from them as well.
>>
>>89842078
I don't mind new things, I'd be a hypocrite if I did. After all, the X-Men have been about new things. However, Quire is a character I loathe because >>89841404. The difference between Sunspot and Quire though is the quality of writing. Sunspot's original thing was that he was an anger prone guy who acted impulsively. Despite that, you could always see the reasoning and logic behind his actions. However, the writers were aware of something called progression. That meant that Sunspot was treated like he was a dick by the others and he suffered consequences for his actions. As a result, slowly but surely Sunspot grew as a person and a character.

Quire on the other hand is a piece of shit. He was originally written as a school shooter, showing how pathetic such individuals would actually have to be. How at the end of the day they just wanted attention. Aaron then took control of Quire and turned him into the definition of a Mary Sue. A character who acted like a dick to everyone and suffered no consequences for it. Everyone who was against him suffered humiliating fates. Mentored by Wolverine, turned into the X-Men's telepath, became a Phoenix Host in the future. All the while not developing an iota or having any logic to or awareness of his character unlike Sunspot.

>>89840626
It's why the guys in this post's pic were great and at least SOME of them should have been in Gen X. They were a generation of teenagers, when teenagers were being written realistically. They were hormonal, emotional messes who didn't immediately get on or even like each other. Like most teenagers. However, they grew as characters over the run. However, their story has not been completed yet and people want to see where they land. If Marvel had it's finger on the pulse, they would have been the Gen X team.

Also the whole nothing new is why I am against the O5. They are not anything new. They are a boring rehash of something that has finished.

the writers and creative teams they do have are all still in the Marvel bubble and its like they've got some retarded group-think cult situation going on where they're all pretending like everythings fine.

Marvel has put themselves at the point now where they should have actually rebooted the whole fuckin thing and done a Nu52 right after hickmans secret wars.. lots of people would be pissed, thered be tons of blowback but it would be something.... they're fuckin mired in continuity, legacy characters, event fatigue, low sales.... just clean off the fucking blackboard other than the bulletpoints and basics and start again.

The only thing I can think of that's letting them put out shitty books at 4 to 5 dollars a month is that the Movie studio wants them around. How can Marvel comics be making any profit?

>A lot of early Marvel Movie stuff took note from the Ultimate universe.
Basically most of what's wrong with the cinematic universe.
>>
>>89844364
It's arguable. Was it when the ultimate universe writers started leaking into 616? Bendis' Avengers? Morrison's X-Men? JMS' Spider-Man?
I mean, there were good things in the meantime, but then they fuck everything up at once. Probably around AvX, or a bit later.
"Oh hey, let's replace EVERYONE because fuck classic Marvel. Fans are gonna buy no matter what, right? lol"

The legacy push really started in 2011, if I recall, more or less around the time AvX came out and the "Superior" gimmick started, so guess I'd go with that timeframe.
>>
>>89842984
Safely, knowing that while the Quesadilla is still there, he has job security.
>>
>>89844564
Fuck man, you're right. Issues happened randomly. AvX was weird and lead into a Bendis run of X-Men. AXIS happend but didn't really have an effect on the situation. Superior Spider-Man was good for some, bad for others. Personally, I liked it, but the change back to Peter showed how stale the writing had become. Superior Iron Man was neat but ended because of Secret Wars, which kill 100% of the momentum every comic had and did nothing with it once it was over. I think Ewing's found ways to make the writing chaos work for his stories but others have just fallen flat to Event tie-ins that are poorly written and make for bad structure in other books. Bendis alone has had 2 major event flops that I can think of, Civil War 2 and Age of Ultron. Nothing good cam from these events and it soured the main reader base. It sucks because Marvel's grounded to "reality" heroes was why I loved them more than DC's Gods. But now, DC makes their Gods way more humanizing that the weird politically motivated heroes Marvel is pushing.

When i first started picking up comics in 2001ish I was a total Marvel kid and had been my whole adolescent life but over the years I went to more Image/Vertigo/Dark Horse stuff and am now picking up some DC, Rebirth Superman is refreshing as hell given the indie stuff I've been reading and what Marvels done over the past decade or so.. I just want enjoyable superhero comics again without politics and dourness thrown in to make it seem all super serious.

Rebirth Superman is a great example of what I love about the rebirth. A lot of it has just been Superman being a great dad and Great hero. He isn't dealing with Right Wing extremist or some kind of dumb hero infighting. He's just being Superman and doing his best and coming out on top. Rebirth made me really see that my "boy scout" view of Superman was very childish.

>Yost leaving Rebels to do comics

I really doubt that. Yost was always someone who prefered TV even if his comic work is good. remember Wolverine and the X-Men? That was Yost. He only went back to comics after that was cancelled.

"We're Marvel comics! We are all about politics!"
"Actually fuck that, we need the dosh, NO MORE POLITICS! THE X-MEN ARE HEROES NOT MINORITY PARALLELS!"

Jesus fuck, just learn how to write your shit subtle, don't amp it to the extreme.
I hate Marvel writers 'cause most of the time they don't know how to write something that isn't as direct as a straight road.

I had a blast with Araki's Steel Ball Run, a comic that showed philosophical concepts, well-written characters, and even believable and understandable political beliefs that can be interpreted as either an selfless act of protection or a selfish ideology that's filled with flaws in the case of Funny Valentine's character development.

Like, you can write your comics the way you were doing, but jesus just don't shove it at someone's face, let the reader connect the dots and see wheter or not they agree with your stance on the character or not.
